Left phone on taxi. Called it but driver didn’t hear. Next customer gets in sees the phone, asks driver to go back to where they dropped and waits for call. Absolutely fabulous people live in Dublin all the time.
Reminder that in Ireland a political party can apply to be treated as a charity; but a human rights organisation cannot become a charity because human rights are too political.
Strike three:
*Fianna Fáil declares itself a 'charity' in legal loophole to run €600k raffle.
*Fine Gael find legal loophole to sell tix at €80 for their superdraw.
*Sinn Féin charge businesses $7,500 for ‘shotgun’ golf at elite New York club.
For anyone interested in how laws should and shouldn’t be made, what is happening in the Dáil now on the Electoral Reform Bill is instructive. Govt is driving through 100 amendments in 90 min after years of consultation. Grim.
Cabinet has decided it wants to extend extraordinary ministerial powers under the Health Act until 9 November. No apparent review of whether this is necessary or if anything can be learned after 14 months. Now it is up to Oireachtas - there should be no extension without review.

This thread from 1 July when we raised concerns about PPS numbers being requested at Dublin Airport - at that time DAA knew nothing about it. But this pre-dates the Regulation (that not many people knew about...)

We have had a report that officials at the airport are asking travellers for PPS numbers? Can you confirm and explain what this is about?

Not sharing the video, but those who harass journalists, are the same that harass elected reps, community and voluntary organisations, trade unions, & minority communities. They use similar slurs on all groups - their aim, to delegitimise & intimate every democratic institution
This day 116 years ago - 18 January 1904 - Michael Davitt condemned a recent boycott of Jewish-owned businesses in Limerick:
“The Jews have never done any injury to Ireland. Like our own race, they have endured a persecution... Ireland has no share in this black record.”
When terraces chant ‘Free from Desire’ it doesn’t mean they (all) are committed to clean living spiritual raving. Sometimes people just like the sound of songs.
Scenes in Dublin CC last night were disturbing. There is no excuse for throwing objects at the Garda. At the same time, the use of batons on groups of young people requires a full report.
The universal opposition in Ireland to the idea of mandatory vaccines is very encouraging. But if you are against coercion for medical treatment, join

Its early for all the hot takes on Casey. There may be plenty of reasons for that vote and it may be a blip - but it’s certainly a good moment to show solidarity with the Travelling Community. Traveller Rights are Human Rights.

No one has done more for human rights and equality in Ireland than Mary Robinson. She made a grave mistake and she is trying to remedy that. I hope her call on Ireland on UNSC to help Princess Latifah is heeded.
Can we please stop pretending that racism in Ireland is 'new', it is not the first time we have seen protests, we have seen them from the very beginning of the foundation of the state but its okay because its only 'Travellers'

… introducing a new law that allows political parties to operate lotteries worth up to €360,000 is an urgent matter that can be brought in without consultation or committee consideration.
We are now getting to the heart of it. Min ROG wanted strong language. DPER and AG were doggedly opposed to anything that might create effective rights - or set precedent for other economic & social rights. Problem for Govt was it tried to mask its intent.

@RadioBrendanRTE
The wider point is - why bother consulting for *years* about a complex issue and legislation; and then ignore recommendations of the Oireachtas Committee while introducing whole new issues at the last min. Members of Oireachtas and civil society take part in process in good faith
After nearly 40 years, and many years after reading everything about the case - still can’t suppress the outrage and horror of Kerry Babies.

Pat Finucane was 39 when he was murdered with State collusion - that was now 31 years ago, and we are being told that now is not the right time for the truth. If not now, when?
We need be careful - there can be long term consequences from many choices we make now around surveillance and individual rights. Totalitarianism is being thrown around as a solution quite casually.
Worth restating that our civil and public servants, and front line staff are doing extraordinary work under incredible pressure. And the community is making huge sacrifices every day. Let’s keep a focus on solidarity, respect and support - and not on recrimination and division.
Lots of discussions this week about the effectiveness of the Standards in Public Office Commission in regulating politicians. Worth remembering that it has chosen to pursue civil society and… residents associations

Agree 100% about sparing use of prison Harry. In this case, there have been repeated breaches of court order, and it looks like court has been doing everything it can to avoid giving him what he wants - which appears to me is prison. It is not a good outcome for anyone.
@harrymcgee
But who would have removed him? The Garda? And is it practicable for the State to operate a private policing operation with permanent security at a private property just to ensure one individual does not break a civil order?
Exclusive: The Sunday Times has discovered that the British soldier accused of killing a young mother, before dumping her body in a septic tank while on training in Kenya, later joked about the murder on Facebook with friends from his regiment
Would this be a good time to slow down and think about new regulations? Maybe the Minister for Health having broad powers to introduce criminal sanctions on an ongoing basis - without Oireachtas oversight - is ... not great.
But for a bill about electoral matters - all you need to know is that (1) reforming donations law whereby a residents association can be prosecuted for raising money to fight a development is ‘too sensitive’ and must be deferred for now; but….
Congrats to

This discussion on assisted dying has been balanced and sensitive. My brother and father died gently with exceptional palliative care - but not everyone in Ireland gets that care. This is a hugely complex issue but I hope we can start a careful discussion in this spirit

71% of Irish people now say that being born in Ireland should entitle you to Irish citizenship. This is HUGE. Just like Brexit, that’s another issue for a second look. Vote based on prejudice and false claims the last time.
All foreign nationals living in Dublin who need to renew their permission to reside here can now complete the process online and no longer have to appear in person at the registration office
There must always be ways to protest in a public place - but intimidating politicians and their families in their home is completely wrong. The prejudice and hatred involved is not a surprise, but is revealing.
Lot of terrible things about all of this. Too many. But sitting at home of a Friday, sipping a beer, listening to

Waiting to see text of regulations, but we are now in extraordinary territory - Garda have helped apply current NPHET restrictions since 27/3 without enforcement. Not clear benefits to follow from shifting gears, and many, many risks.

The murder of Lyra McKee is a personal tragedy for her loved ones and a public tragedy for Ireland and for journalism. Devastating to think we are back here on a Good Friday.
Sallins case an horrific case of torture of suspects, AND a disgraceful litany of miscarriages of justice at several levels of the justice system. There must be an independent public inquiry into the treatment of Osgur Breatnach and others.

There are huge difficulties with potential discrimination on the basis of vaccine, especially when severe shortages apply. Speculation by Tánaiste on social media is irresponsible. Vaccinated will be offered additional freedoms, says Varadkar
This is a key point about N Frederick St - Evictions are civil matters. It is not the job of police to effect evictions. Operations of this type create that perception (to put it no stronger), damaging the Garda and community relations. And it is avoidable.
