Bed Bath & Beyond blew one billion dollars on stock buybacks, a direct cash transfer to shareholders, in 2021.
Now it's bankrupt, in no small part because of that $1B hole, and....no severance for workers who've been there for 20 years.
Amazing for the NYT to create an equivalence between one family moving to a different state because the medical care their child needs was made illegal and one family moving because they don't like to see unhoused people and got radicalized by social media. Impressive!
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, speaking on CNN, on “uncommitted”:
“They are asking to be heard and that's what they should be doing… Their message is clear that they think this is an intolerable situation and that we can do more. And I think the president is hearing that.”
Arab, Black, progressive and youth voters won MI for Biden in 2020. Voting uncommitted was no attack - it was an invitation to bring the coalition back together.
This is not how someone who wants to lead that coalition responds.
Legitimately stuck on a former WH press secretary trying to justify the firing of a father of three from his $15/hr job during a global pandemic for the crime of standing up for his co-workers and family.
.
@SenSanders
, I’m confused. Thought you wanted us to protect our workers? Mr. Smalls purposely violated social distancing rules, repeatedly, & was put on Paid 14-day quarantine for COVID exposure. 3/30 he returned to the site. Knowingly putting our team at risk is unacceptable.
If you are a communications staffer for an American federal agency or an elected official you should know you are allowed to quit your job when they tell you to lie. Probably you should. Quit, I mean.
The Chicago mayor's race is a critically important thing for anyone on the electoral left to pay close attention to, for a host of different reasons. (1/12)
I simply believe that no one going about their business should have to deal with five belligerent people jumping out and pointing weapons at them while screaming at them to get out of their car.
I have no idea why we haven't seen anyone in the political media state a clear fact - that in 2020, homicide rates surged across the country. Red states, republican cities, rural areas all had surges - with no correlation to the amount of time schools were closed.
Chicago mayoral candidates Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas really tear into each other on education and public safety.
Vallas with a blistering attack on Johnson, CTU and “your brethren” for forcing school closures, prompting, he says, a surge in homicides.
Hi
@chicagosmayor
did you know that there are only 80 libraries in the over 500

Fund our kids' education, don't score cheap political points. Chicago can't be a book sanctuary until all of our kids have access to books in their schools.
Among other things, this is deep and important leadership from rust belt progressives. St. Louis, Chicago, Indianapolis, Detroit, Pittsburgh. These aren't coastal elite left demands - they are demands from leaders of the multi-racial working class.
As a long-time organizer and incoming Executive Director for
@inthesetimesmag
, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the organizing landscape, the urgent need for left media, and how I plan to approach the role.
If the campaign to vote uncommitted in Michigan had more than three weeks and like twenty bucks what would the result have been? This is what any serious Democratic operative should be thinking about right now.
Dear NYC: in Chicago, we know what it's like to have an accidental mayor who pretends to be of the left while dog whistling to the right at every opportunity. It's not pretty.
It’s truly disturbing that Members of Congress rushed to blame Israel for the hospital tragedy in Gaza.
Who would take the word of a group that just massacred innocent Israeli civilians over our key ally?
Love that it's so surprising to so many pundits that union members are willing to fight for someone they don't know. Do they know what a union is? Do they know what a strike is?
A worker at a foundry in Illinois died after falling into molten iron, but if the required safety guards were installed, they'd still be alive. The foundry is owned by Caterpillar, one of the largest companies in the world.
The proposed penalty is only $145k.
All power to the members of the
@UAW
, I also want to give credit to Shawn Fain's leadership team for putting together a staff that can do justice to the fight that workers are leading.
@lukeoneil47
The kicker is in the detail of this story: cops have charged the alleged shooter with homicide.
Not because the shooting victim died - but for the murder committed by a police officer.
Probably the strongest statement from a major American local union on
#ceasefire
so far, and of course it comes from the fighting
@UAWLocal551

I never in a million years imagined that we would have a
@UAW
leadership that shared the story of the League of Revolutionary Black Workers, this is legitimately blowing my mind this morning. Elections have consequences, indeed. Watch it if you haven't!
In the 1960s, Black autoworkers fought against exploitation on the shop floor and confronted the officials of their union, who had tried to stop them from taking action to resolve grievances.

Don't know if I've seen it said here but I was just hanging out with 4,000 of my favorite friends, mostly union members, we wore little stickers with our pronouns and it worked out totally fine. Also as a facilitator "comrade" is a super helpful gender neutral word.
Sorry not gonna read any Said or Fanon tonight, going to hug my 5 y/o tight and ache for those who've lost their own, wherever they are. What's happening in Gaza right now is a horror - our task as a left is to build the power to end apartheid and occupation wherever they exist.
We’re thrilled to announce that
@alex__han
will be our new Executive Director! At a time of incredible labor militancy, Alex’s ties to unions and grassroots social movements will help us grow the media we need to fight corporations and the Right.
NEW:
@ColectivoCoffee
could soon be the largest unionized coffee chain in the U.S.
Workers just began voting on a union that would bring together baristas, bakery workers, delivery drivers, & more.
But management is going all out to stop them.
This is a Palestinian Muslim family that was targeted, and the suspect was screaming anti-Muslim slurs during the attack.
Media and politicians are complicit in this boy’s death.
Mainstream media calls almost all progressive positions far left. In reality, Medicare for All polls at 70% and Latinx polls at 4%. One is actually far left and the other is the majority of the country. I want to make these distinctions, so they don't smear all of our policies.

: REI has told workers unionizing hurts its "vibe" and would "put what you have at risk," & that union has "red flags" like not spending much on “social impact.” REI talking points say it’ll “ensure” no one has a better experience because of union
On the other side, we are witnessing at scale an experiment in building a new kind of right-led electoral front. They are attempting to use the corpse of the Democratic Party as a trojan horse to launder the demands of the far right. (5/12)
When you elect a mayor from the movement, you can make things happen. If it was anyone but
@ChicagosMayor
in that seat, this vote either fails or never comes up.
BREAKING: Chicago has become the largest city in the U.S. to call for a ceasefire in Gaza. Mayor Brandon Johnson broke a 23-23 tie by supporting the resolution calling for an end to violence, release of hostages and supplying of humanitarian aid—making the final vote 24-23.
Every poll in the Chicago mayor's race is gonna show the same thing - it's close.
Please keep in mind that there are no undecided voters here on twitter, and that people want to join a movement that is hopeful for the future, not one that's angry about hypocrisy.
No amount of punditry can erase the fact that hundreds of thousands of Democratic voters across the country are collectively expressing their disgust at our support for the destruction of Gaza.
@BebopOtt
I love this so much. Did she fly from New Zealand? How could you possibly spend $3k on this conference, rooms in the hotel were like $110 and the discounted beers at the bar were $5.
My new Gaza statement:
"It's time for Israel's friends to recognize that the current approach is causing an unacceptable level of civilian harm and does not appear likely to achieve the goal of ending the threat from Hamas. I urge Israel to immediately reconsider its approach."
My general rule is if your "left" or "progressive" org is bragging about a 75-100% win rate, you aren't trying nearly hard enough. If all you take on is "winnable" fights your horizon is too low to matter.
On the positive side, we are seeing an electoral expression of a decade + of deep coalition building across the most progressive wings of both the labor movement and neighborhood/issue/constituency based organizing. (2/12)
I want to express my continued amazement at the members of
@CTULocal1
and their willingness to fight for themselves, their students + communities. They've served as a beacon and inspiration for so many of us - in labor, education, movements for justice.
The Biden administration's secrecy on arms to Israel is beginning to rankle congressional Democrats, including close of allies of the president. The lack of transparency is in stark contrast to how the administration discloses arms to Ukraine... 🧵
Here's your fucking crime wave. Four and a half years as a temp. FOUR AND A HALF YEARS!

End tiers! I’ve been a temp for 4.5 years with no plan to hire me in full time. I want my fulll time benefits. I’ve worked 60 hours a week alongside full timers. NO MORE TIERS!
The candidate of the broad left is a key leader and organizer of a series of militant strikes, each with deeper demands than the last. We have a candidate for mayor whose entire past decade plus has been dedicated to organizing for the common good. (3/12)

True, but also true that Chosun Ilbo is a right wing, reactionary conservative outlet that is about as accurate a source as Fox News. Take with a huge grain of salt.
If the far right is able to win a foothold in the 3rd-biggest city in America, a city that voted 86-16 for Joe Biden, the home of our first black president, the birthplace of the 8 hour day, then who knows what comes next? (11/12)
If you are in Chicago and find yourself on the same side as Ray Lopez and Moms for Liberty it is probably time to take a deep breath and reassess your thinking.
Hi
@nytimes
is this like a paid advertisement for Big 3 management or do you just do this as a favor for friends? I can guarantee you no management-side negotiator was "racing to avoid a strike" here. "Despite these efforts" GTFOH
Wild to call an elected official who immigrated to this country, became a citizen, and has been organizing and fighting for justice "anti-american." Words have meanings, and those who opportunistically use symbols to score cheap political points are the real despicable ones.
Ald. Sygcho-Lopez is anti-American and divisive as can be. While burning and desecrating our country's flag is not illegal, it is his right to be despicable and on par for him.
Just for the record,
@inthesetimesmag
shipped our next issue (hitting mailboxes this week) to the printer with this editorial in it - on March 30th. Yes, we were confident in the outcome.
Preposterously stupid take. As
@DemSocialists
members phonebank daily to push "progressive" members of Congress to live up to their stated values by supporting an immediate ceasefire, Atkins and Meyerson wring their hands about...nothing of substance.
We are also seeing the reality of how the left can contest for executive power - and that the clearest path is in close coalition with black voters and black political leadership. (4/12)
This front reaches from the desiccated center of the Democratic Party to the deepest reaches of the far right. It is financed by some of the wealthiest people in the world, and is (importantly) a multi-racial coalition as well. (6/12)
This is an

appreciation tweet, he might have learned 17 languages or whatever to write his book deconstructing the post 1917 socialist moment but he will also just work the sign in table and figure out lunch distribution, the two most important parts of organizing.

Shawn Fain + the UAW trying to set everyone's contract to expire in 2028 is cool.
It's also the type of plan Minnesota unions—where many contracts are soon expiring—have been hatching for a decade.

Let’s be clear. Mayor Johnson’s Bring Home Chicago plan is a tax on commercial property who will absorb 90% of the cost. With depressed commercial property sector in Chicago already the highest taxed in the US this will slow recovery & shift tax burden to homeowners & renters.
