There are real dilemmas facing any attempt to boost NYC unionization For instance, Zohran has to prioritize winning his core planks—& most unions are risk-adverse & refuse to seriously invest in new organizing But it's a low risk high reward wager to try boosting mass unionism

Laws don't mean much if employers continue to flout them — which is why Zohran should consider doubling the staffing of the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection Doing so wouldn't cost the city anything, since the DCWP generally brings in so much $$$ from fines & licenses

Fear is one of the biggest obstacles to unionization That's why it's so crucial for Zohran to keep throwing his weight behind @tiffany_caban's Secure Jobs Act as well as other bills to prevent unfair firings

It's morally justified and politically smart for Zohran pick a fight with Trump's buddy Jeff Bezos New York City has the power to mandate Amazon to directly hire all its subcontracted drivers — making unionization with @804_local much easier

Just having the right socialist positions doesn't do much in the real world if you can't figure out how to translate these into concrete tactics capable of advancing the interests, consciousness, & power of millions of workers Firm in principles, flexible in tactics

Relying on intransigent leftist formulas is easier (but far less effective) than making a concrete assessment of a concrete terrain to determine which demands & campaigns —inside & outside the state— will best advance workers' interests, plus build socialist & labor organization

There's no formula for mass socialist politics—just a perpetual attempt to confront dilemmas & assess tradeoffs: which compromises are necessary? which go too far? how much to prioritize electoral vs bottom-up disruptive movements? etc Only sects can avoid these tensions

Whether you like it or not, the path to majoritarian socialist politics requires putting a central focus on winning elections & passing improvements to workers' lives Of course this raises very hard tactical dilemmas! But any other approach is a recipe for perpetual marginality
