VERY good news...
In February 2025 we will publish BASE NOTES, a big-hearted, tragicomic memoir from
@adellestripe
in which memories are triggered by perfumes as she explores family ties, Northern culture and the pursuit of creativity.
Cover and pre-order info coming soon...
It’s ten years since I started researching and writing the life of Andrea Dunbar. What became of it - a PhD, novel and play - was beyond my expectations. I just wanted to know more about her and wrote the book that didn’t exist, the one I wanted to read.
It's a nice surprise to see Ten Thousand Apologies in Audible's top 20 music book chart after all this time. Deepest gratitude to all who have bought and supported the book. Booksellers, readers, record collectors, waifs and strays -- we love you.
"You nurse a pint in Tadcaster, you nurse it tenderly, as if it is going to save you from yourself. There is always love between the drinker and the drink..."

It was beautiful. And
@spiderstacy
and the Pogues playing The Parting Glass was incredibly poignant. Fr. Gilbert was superb. Very generous of family & friends to allow cameras in. Respect to them.
A bookshop to dream of. If you haven’t visited yet, make an A1 detour and spend the afternoon perusing its shelves of secondhand treasures. Pure magic 🌟
This will be a treat of a listen 📷

Echoing their famous joint appearance in Jim Jarmusch’s ‘Coffee and Cigarettes’, the two-hour programme will see the pair pump the Confidential Jukebox full of nickels…

A friend saw them around that time and broke his specs on the way in. He watched them through blurred colours and reckoned it was the greatest gig he ever saw. They sounded like a funk cassette that had been left on the dashboard in the blazing sun.

Can Lawrence cook? And if so, what is his speciality? I imagine he survives on a diet of Smash, Angel Delight, Findus Pancakes and Pot Noodles.
Was a pleasure to contribute to this J.B. Priestley project (and record an audio essay at Bradford Ice Rink). Well worth an extended rummage through this splendid list of writers at BBC Canvas 👇
ICYMI: This short essay on Tadcaster and its feral drinking culture was one of this year’s writing highlights. It was a strange town to grow up in. A place trapped in permanent stasis. It’s a relief not to live there anymore, but part of it always follows you around.

Their karaoke afternoons were legendary. Once saw an inebriated chap in his 80s belting out The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore in there like his life depended on it. The whole pub gave him a standing ovation.
I used to work in Hodges Figgis and Shane McGowan was the nicest celebrity customer . A deep passion for and knowledge of Irish history and politics. Used to buy piles of books, hand over a wad of 50s and ask for change to go in the poor box. A man of great talent and humanity.

bands are given a proper meal (often Indonesian if the kitchen is open that night). They really look after touring musicians hence the reason why so many massive acts choose to play there.
Rewatching this. Its not on streaming services (I think?) and gets nowhere near enough love today.
Several episodes are absolute comedy writing/acting masterclasses.
The banality of English life in all its weird glory.

On this gloomy Thursday, I wanted to tell you why sometimes this place can be brilliant and lead you down new paths and introduce you to new films and authors that you might never have discovered.
Alongside Kathryn Scanlan’s Kick the Latch, The Collected Works of Jo Ann Beard is the best book I’ve read all year. It’s a rarity to come across writing so good that you’re still haunted by it weeks after reading. Absolutely besotted.
@8bitnortherner
You can always tell the daytrippers in Hebden as that’s a similar uniform. Way too clean and impractical for moorland living. Locals wear dark mud-covered coats, knackered wellies and sport a generally bedraggled demeanour.
@i_am_mill_i_am
@BacklistedPod
It’s brilliant. Wasn’t convinced 605 pages on that odious pair could hold my attention, but the writing is formidably good. Alongside Penman’s Fassbinder, it’s my non fiction book of the year.
Periodic posting of The Fall’s Smile, this time live footage from The Tube, watched on by an evidently excited John Peel. “Something to dance to/A certain style/SMILE!” Didn’t indie go all silly after this?
@DrMarkDunford
Absolutely. Wanted to create something digestible and readable from the long months of diligent note-taking and archive digging. It was cross-discipline (Modern British History and Creative Writing) which aided the process.
@ofwolveschicago
Lias is Algerian. It was a term of racist abuse used against him growing up as the only person of colour in a very white town (on the border of Ulster). This is old news. If you search online you’ll see the coverage.
@krldslv
Same for so many growing up outside of London. We have had to fight tooth and nail for a creative life. I’m furious on behalf of young people who have so much potential. Disgusted by this whole sh*tshow of a government.

Spiky, hilarious and endlessly entertaining interview with Andrew Wylie here. I’d very much like to believe it is all true. Especially the scurrilous account of Amis Jr & Sr. Surely he has a book in him? (👏)
@RobGallowayUK
I didn’t know that. Always wondered exactly where he came from, as somewhere between Tad, Donnie and York suggests Drax or Selby? The thought of Bowie even knowing the shitty town where we lived was mindblowing. So we liked to believe he was one of the lost sons.
@nic_greenan
Same here. After failing GCSEs, BTEC was the only option at 17 (a time of difficult personal circumstances). Thankfully
@UniofGreenwich
counted it w/ a portfolio for admission. They saw potential in mature students. Grateful they took a chance on me.
@Jenni_Fagan
Genuinely affordable social housing that can never be sold would solve so many problems. Well designed, low-rise flats in each town. As
@paulsng
’s documentary says, it’s profitable for councils once build costs are covered. Absolute no-brainer.
@robinince
If I may be impolite enough to interject here — there are multiple reasons behind Andrea’s early death including untreated ill health, alcoholism & domestic violence. The ‘industry’ person who really helped her in the final stages of her life was Kay Mellor.
@tracey_thorn
Yes, I concur. We eloped as the whole public fuss and splother just wasn't our style. Had fish and chips for lunch, then went round the charity shops. After that, tea and cake at Betty's. Perfect day out. We invited nobody and offended everyone equally.
@ScottAPatient
Sorry to hear this. I know how hard you've grafted to make this area a better place to live. You were the unity candidate and one who could garner votes from those who wouldn't dream of turning red. Labour's loss. They've underestimated how popular you are.

Or perhaps one for Channel 4? You’re right, it’s not brain surgery. Easiest format ever. A line of performers queuing to appear. Readymade audience. Water cooler talking points every week. And… Christmas specials!
@LukeTurnerEsq
Ooh that's like Haworth. Last time I visited, three men (Himmler, Heydrich and Goebbels) were sat in the cafe imbibing tea and scones. A few years ago, German tourists were greeted by a group of 'vintage weekend' storm troopers frogmarching down the high street. Fun times!
