Our gigs went better than I could have hoped; even the things that went wrong added to the magic.

I wrote about the fun of rehearsing for these gigs that are *checks notes* ANY MINUTE NOW - "the whole experience has felt quite free, reminding us of our DIY roots. We've no expectations and no obligations to anyone else. We’re just pleasing ourselves"

I wrote about Vivian Gornick's The Odd Woman & the City & how it resonated with me. "Maybe cities are perfect for introverts, and writers. Those of us who like people, at a distance; who like the IDEA of company; who enjoy imagining what others are like."

I went to see the new Led Zeppelin film, in a spirit of curiosity rather than avid fandom, was won over by the sound, but came out with thoughts about women and our complicated relationship with rock music

"As I look at it I think, 'Hang on, I’m IN this photograph!' Taken in 1978 at Victoria Park it shows Paul Simonon from the Clash on stage facing a huge crowd at the culmination of an Anti-Nazi League march. I’d been on the march and I was in that crowd"

"I like these concerts, but more in theory than in practice. I like the IDEA of them. Maybe I like the idea of being the kind of person who would like them." New column, in which I try to listen to classical music

If there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that there's no point in making aspirational resolutions.

I wrote about Brat, and being in your early 30s. "I was 32 when “Missing” came out..And it is similarly fixated on that transitional life moment – a dance-floor anthem about longing for a childhood friend, while also being unable to “move on”.

A recent London show proved Brat is the album of the year, and she is the artist of the moment. Am I too old to join in?

I wrote a long piece about Charli XCX and Brat and the concert the other night - "The whole thing treads that line between minimal and maximal in a way that is so Charli – stripped down to basics, but every single one of those basics working its arse off."

“But in the end, as so often in Joni's songs, she's the one calling the shots. The song is a farewell with ‘no regrets.’” - Tracey Thorn on Joni’s performance of “Coyote” from ‘The Last Waltz’ at Winterland Arena on this day in 1976.
