Green Party Candidate in Carrickmacross and Castleblayney ⚪ Fighting for a fairer and better future for all ⚪ Working with
@cathmartingreen
in Dáil Éireann ⚪
In 2017, Fine Gael spent 200k on a campaign 'Welfare Cheats Cheat Us All', finding just ONE case of fraud that year.
Meanwhile, FG TD Dara Murphy claims his full wage of 94k & max expenses of 51k per year despite not speaking in the Dáil since 2017
Who are the real cheats here?
Hunger strikes, in Ireland, in 2020, over institutional abuse.
Direct Provision is a stain on this nation, it cannot be abolished quickly enough.
Solidarity to the hunger strikers in Kerry ✊
#EndDirectProvision
I've decided to put my name forward as the Green Party candidate in the General Election in Cavan Monaghan. I am the youngest Dáil candidate in the country and I have a huge task on my hands. For a young, progressive vote for rural Ireland, vote Tate Donnelly
#1
on February 8th.
Leo Varadkar justifies institutional racism in Ireland by saying that it's not as bad as the institutional racism ongoing in the US.
What a low bar to set. Pathetic.
Leo Varadkar concedes some Direct Provision accommodation is substandard but it is "ultimately a service provided by the state… free accommodation, food, heat, lighting, education, and some spending money. It's not the same thing as a man being killed by the police."
A very special moment for me. Thank you to all 4187 who put their trust in me, it's a huge honour. Thanks to all who donated, canvassed, postered, messaged, and supported in any way at all, it really means so so much. An enjoyable, emotional, and hectic few weeks 💚
Last day on the campaign trail. Asking for every
#1
vote I can get to make a real difference for the people of Cavan, Monaghan, and North Meath. Is féidir linn ✊👊💚
Lots to digest in the census results announced today, but one very positive thing to see is that Gaeilge is definitely on the rise in Monaghan - we now have the highest percentage of Irish speakers of any county outside the Gaeltacht!
Muineachán Abú!!!🤍💙
Lots of respect for this Eoin. Had a good look at SF manifesto and there's a lot there that we agree on. This country needs a radical, progressive shift in housing, health, climate & much more, and the only way we'll achieve this is by working together 👏👏
#Govt4Change
Some interesting reading on my way into work this morning. Am I the only one excited by the possibilities opened up for a progressive Government?
#GE2020
has made real change achievable. All we need is ambition & political will.
#Govt4Change
What a shame. Let's reopen Kingscourt rail station and reconnect Cavan and Monaghan to the rest of the country. Rail needs to be properly invested in to help bring rural Ireland back to life, improve our standard of living, give us more job opportunities and reduce emissions.
Thank you
@TVsCarlKinsella
@JOEdotie
for coming to Monaghan to speak to me, I really appreciate it.
My message is simple. We can vote for something different. We can be active. We can do better than what we have. We can change this. Don't let anyone say we can't 👊👊✊💪
'Monaghan and Cavan have the highest suicide rates in the country which I think is just not good enough'
At 21,

is the youngest candidate running in

. He told JOE why this election is so important for young people.
It's been a long journey full of ups&downs, so feel very lucky & proud to say that I officially have a First Class Honors Degree in Economics and Mathematics! Can't thank everyone enough for the support over the years, and today in particular thinking of those no longer with us.
Huge honour to be able to give myself a number 1 vote today, and to be able to ask the people of Cavan, Monaghan, and North Meath to do the same. Feel extremely privileged today and hopeful for what's to come!👊💪

I'm very excited to be starting work for the fantastic
@cathmartingreen
as her Secretarial Assistant from next week! Very grateful to Minister Martin for this opportunity, looking forward to getting stuck in. Monaghan is taking over, 1 step at a time! 😉
13k for free healthcare, an education system, public transport infrastructure, roads to drive on, and so much more, with 37k to live off on top of that, sounds like a pretty good deal in life to me.
The way we view tax and how we talk about it has to change☕☕
Have to call this out. The fact that the
@SocDems
haven't changed their account name to the 'Social Distancing Democrats' is bad comms. A missed opportunity.
"Yeah sorry to hear about the greens never really liked them tbh here anyway you should come to PBP with me it'd be class haha, they all have all the best policies ever and everyone is so much better there I can send ya the link if you want go on haha"
An open letter to members of the Green Party.
We are building a principled and coherent party that relates to the growing movements. We will never support a government that has Fianna Fail or Fine Gael in it.

There's clearly a lot of work still to be done to stamp homophobia out of Irish politics and Irish society.
Solidarity to you
@rodericogorman
, don't let it get to you. No better person to be minister for equality, children, integration, and disability.
Oh dear. Fianna Fáil won't even speak to the party that got the largest vote in the election! Greens spoke to FF, and found you unambitious on our aims. Greens also proposed a national unity government which your party rejected? Sad to see you resort to tweets like this. Grow up.
That hardware store that
@EamonRyan
mentioned could be handy now for the fence that the
@greenparty_ie
and others want to sit on for the next few weeks / years.
Somebody needs to take Fine Gael aside and tell them that the year is 2020 and the argument 'Sinn Féin = IRA' doesn't work anymore and all it does is expose a weakness in FG. It's about time FG&FF openly and honestly debated policies with SF and moved politics forward in Ireland.
One item up for sale is a badge displaying a van with ‘Irish Republican Army’ displayed on the side, showing men with guns primed alongside an Irish fl. Sale of IRA badges on @ SinnFéin Website is a glimpse behind their party mask

the very best of luck in the upcoming Seanad by-election. Over the last 2 years, as a fellow EC member, I have been able to see her exceptional passion, knowledge, and work ethic in action. She would be an excellent addition to Seanad Éireann.
Great news that Monaghan County Council and Cavan County Council passed motions today asking the government to give CETA and other international trade agreements the full scrutiny and debate in the Oireachtas that it deserves before a vote takes place
Glad to hear Nicola Sturgeon is on good terms with Micheál Martin once again after reportedly being devastated to be snubbed for a junior ministry earlier this week.
I had a very productive conversation earlier with the Scottish First Minister
@NicolaSturgeon
We talked about the deep ties between our nations, the challenges of rebuilding after Covid-19 and how we best manage the risks of Brexit. 🇮🇪 🏴
The first thing on my election leaflet in February was to stand up for young people and to give them a voice in politics. Young people are angry at the political establishment for constantly letting them down. On housing, climate, mental health, education, and more.
I will be running for election to Monaghan County Council next June as the Green Party Candidate in the Carrickmacross-Castleblayney area.
I have worked hard for this area for a number of years & I would be honoured to be elected to represent the people of this amazing community
No harm to ye
@fiannafailparty
@FineGael
, what was the point in signing up to the Paris Agreement if you had no intention of actually achieving its targets?
The coordinated attack on Roderic over the last week or so has been one of the nastiest things I've seen in politics. Really vile and disgusting. Let's hope this is the end of the matter and Roderic can get on with the important job he has ahead of him.
A small group of people with a very clear agenda have been making allegations about me on social media over the last few days.
I’m taking this opportunity to set the record straight.
A load of waffle. Moving to a more humane system could save the state €45m per annum according to new Ombudsman report. And there's housing available, 200000 vacant units in the country. All it takes to end Direct Provision is political will and an ounce of compassion.
The incoming temporary justice minister Heather Humphreys claims on

that Leo Varadkar’s leaking of a confidential government document was in the public interest

As we look at the upsetting events across the water, we must reflect and admit that racism not only is very present here in Ireland, but that it's on the rise.
There has been an increase in the number of protests against immigration, and we allow institutional racism to continue
Thousands of people in Ireland are without a safe space to isolate in or to call home. Thousands sleeping rough, moving from hotel to hotel & in direct provision. With so many vacant houses, flats, & hotels, every effort should be made to give a safe space to all at this time.
No going back now!😬
It's an honour to officially be a candidate in Cavan Monaghan in the General Election.
I'm doing it to give people the opportunity to vote for something different. For energy, for passion, and for a fresh perspective. For a voice for young people.

Just as everyone tucks into their Sunday lunch this is what a pregnant woman in Direct Provision in Monaghan is being served up!! No words

Thank you
@lukeming
for coming to Cavan to show your support for Emmett Smith and myself. We have a range of candidates in Cavan Monaghan that offer a real, better alternative to FF & FG. Vote left and transfer left for change this Saturday

Agonisingly close for
@saoirse_mchugh
. I'm devastated for you Saoirse, hope you can bounce back stronger than ever. An amazing & inspiring woman, the country would have been a better place had she been elected. Let this be the last Seanad election where so few decide so much.
The eighteenth count has been completed. As no candidate was elected on that count, McHugh, Saoirse is excluded. As the number of candidates is equal to the number of vacancies remaining unfilled, McGahon, John and Warfield, Fintan are deemed to be elected
#Seanad2020
I think we have

to thank for this one. He used his influence in a selfless way to help have a huge positive impact on the country. Legend. Thank you Ming 👏👏

rose organically. I don't recall it being kickstarted—there wasn't even a settled hashtag (sometimes it was

A huge honour for me to be re-elected to the

Executive Committee over the weekend. Thank you to all members for your support. There's an absolutely massive amount of work to be done to get through these difficult times, and I look forward to getting stuck in again.

Direct Provision puts a section of society at a huge disadvantage to everyone else. A lack of access to work, education and many other basic needs and rights.
That is literally race inequality. Institutional race inequality.
Wait till he finds out our Minister for Arts, Tourism, Gaeltacht, Sport, Media, and Culture isn't an artistic, travelling, Irish-speaking, football-shaped MP3 player in a cult, he'll be raging.
Sure we’ll be grand..

leadership election. I am delighted to nominate & support Catherine Martin for the role. She is a role model to me and to so many in the party. I believe she is the right person to lead us into this new era💚
@cathmartingreen
It's been a great election so far for us. A record vote, polls topped, and gains in new areas. Big day ahead for us in several constituencies, 🤞 for more gains 💪💚
A year ago yesterday we celebrated my 21st birthday, and in the early hours of the morning Cormac Ó Braonáin tragically died on his way home. Cormac was one in a million. It's been an emotional evening watching this lovely tribute to him from Labour:
Solidarity to
@fintanwarfield
for the horrible homophobic abuse he is receiving.
Which gay politician will be targeted next? And what sort of message does this send to members of the LGBT+ community, particularly those who want to get involved in politics? So sad to see.
And we're off!
Going with a small number of posters to get the word out there.
We're flat out canvassing across the constituency tomorrow and all weekend, give me a shout if you're around to give a hand! Would be much appreciated.
Thanks for all the support so far!

Some move from Wetherspoon.
It has suspended all payments to its Irish suppliers.
Random fact: In the six months to January, Wetherspoon made a profit of £45 million.
This was up from £40m during the same period the year before.
Today I wrote to
@EamonRyan
TD, Minister for Transport, as well as the NTA, to highlight the issues with the current public bus service available in Monaghan, and the urgent need for Monaghan to have its own dedicated public bus service to and from Dublin.

statement against further talks with FF and FG.
Don't call yourself an Irish fan if you're directing abuse at Mark Travers tonight. If you're a fan you'll want him to bounce back and be the best he can be in the next game. He's 21 and just made his competitive debut. Support the players win, lose, or draw 👊👊

So they are passing legislation to allow Gardaí into homes to make sure there are no more than 6 people from 3 households, but then organise a party for 81 Oireachtas members? Disappointing and unacceptable. Seems we're not

Looks like I’m not in the running this time. Huge thanks to my team who did amazing work at short notice, & to everyone who trusted me with their No.1 Vote. 🌹

Great to stop in with Áine yesterday in Crafty. Crafty is a lovely new shop at the top of Muckno Street, Castleblayney with an emphasis on sustainable living, selling items that are plastic-free and handmade in Ireland. Best wishes to Áine for many successful years ahead!! 🙌
A year ago I sent an email to a lad called Sean McCabe because I was interested in his work on climate justice and equality. He took me under his wing and a year later we're running mates for Dáil Éireann. Can't wait to see you get elected Seán, we need you in there 👊👊
Great fun and amazing response on the doors today in Carrick and Bailieborough!! People want a fresh, passionate voice in Dáil Éireann. 2 weeks to go and we're in this to win it 💪✊💚

Very disappointing that Monaghan councillor Paudge Connolly not only went on an unnecessary holiday abroad, but also came back and attended the Oireachtas Golf Society event without even quarantining. A kick in the teeth to the people of Monaghan - this is our representation!!
Saoirse has been a great friend and mentor to me in her time in the Greens. It has been both fun and inspiring to campaign alongside her.
So sorry to see you go
@saoirse_mchugh
, beir bua a chara. Our country and our planet need your voice for years to come ✊
Thread on leaving the greens:
I have left the Green Party. I doubt that’s a surprise to most people.
The reasons I have left are obvious, I joined the greens with the hope of furthering the cause of climate justice..1/
*PROPOSED NEW BUS ROUTES FOR CAVAN AND MONAGHAN*
Incredible improvements to bus services in Cavan and Monaghan in the 'Connecting Ireland' Plan, launched today by the NTA. Just imagine the difference these improved services would make to so many lives across our region!! 😍
Can members of Fianna Fáil stop retweeting this? You're literally no better, whatsoever. Voting fraud is arguably worse than just not being present.
Cop on to yourselves, thanks.
The Irish Times reckon I have a chance, and so do I! Already this feels like it could be something very special. We have a really great feeling about this campaign. So much done, so much still to do. Thanks for all the support so far!💚👊
Thinking of Cormac Ó'Braonáin's family and friends, his extended family in
@labour
and
@labouryouth
, and everyone who knew him, 2 years on today from his tragic passing. A true gent who was going to be a political star. He is missed by so many. RIP.
I'm the first to criticise Leo Varadkar, but it's on his policies. It's not anything to do with the colour of his skin, or where his family comes from. It's worrying to see something like this. Attitudes like this move politics backwards, not forwards.
This👇👇
Next time a politician promises you a tax cut at all costs, ask them how they plan on fixing the crises in housing, health, transport, and climate. Ask them where they'll get the money for better mental health services. See through their shallow, unimaginative nonsense.
Dear Politicans,
Don’t knock on my door offering me a tax cut while people are dying on trolleys, on streets, in direct provision centres, dying from gun/knife violence, because of inadequate mental health services, dying because they weren’t important enough to live.
#GE2020
This is just lovely. Cormac was an inspiring activist who was going to take the political world by storm. He brought a unique energy, passion and knowledge and has left a lasting legacy on me and so many others across the political spectrum. RIP Cormac Ó Braonáin.
This year
