This week, Senator David Norris announced he will retire from politics. It’s impossible to overstate the bravery and the personal & financial risks & sacrifices that David made, forcing a reluctant administration to repeal discriminatory legislation on consensual sexual intimacy.
Today in the Seanad, Sinn Féin are calling on Gov't to keep their word; to disregard the criminal records of gay and bi men who were convicted of historical offences, prior to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1993. We are 30 years on now and time is of the essence.
22 Irish republicans died on hunger strike in the 20th century. They include Thomas Ashe and the Lord Mayor of Cork, Terence MacSwiney in 1920. On this day in 1981, Joe McDonnell died at the age of 30, having spent 61 days on hunger strike.
We have the biggest primary school class sizes in Europe. If there was ever a time to reduce class sizes, surely this is it.
@sinnfeinireland
will use Dáil time tomorrow to call on the government to immediately and drastically reduce class sizes.
As I rode in to the convention centre today, I felt v greatful to everyone who has supported me in my life. I will stand up for the change that people voted for in February. This Seanad does not reflect that change.
Absolutely fair play to
@EricaCody
and
@Bambiethug
for coming out and saying that Israel shouldn’t be allowed to compete in the Eurovision this year. Both musicians are taking part in the RTÉ contest tonight.
How are single people, couples or families supposed to compete against vulture funds? 620 homes were bulk-bought by investors last year. The Gov said they wanted to end this practice. They have not. 46 homes bulk-bought in Belcamp Manor are now advertised for rent. €3,175 p/m.
I stood with women outside Leinster House this morning and used my time in the Seanad just now to support calls for the extension of maternity leave by 12 weeks for mothers of babies born during the emergency.
This afternoon

Senators will table amendments to make

central to the work of the new Electoral Commission. It is almost 10 years since the constitutional convention supported lowering the voting age. There have been enough delays.
Extremely proud to have worked with so many trans and non-binary folk before and since gender recognition was won in 2015. There is a whole new chapter to write that includes the voices of all young people. ✊🏼

Tonight, Sinn Féin will bring a motion to the Seanad to help save nightlife. It’s time for Government to finally publish their proposals for reform of licensing laws and fees! Read our motion:
Let this Government’s response to Jenin be the recognition of the state of Palestine. The Dáil has already voted to recognise the state of Palestine. Let this Government act on that mandate.
Senator Fintan Warfield, Statements on Palestine
I commend the
@TheUSI
and
@ActiveConsent
for shining a light on the extent of sexual harassment and violence at Third Level. You will have our full support in demanding the necessary changes recommended in the report.
The incredible work of homeless services and addiction services, in partnership with
@DubCityCouncil
and the
@HSE_SI

An update on Sinn Féin’s nightlife motion last night: The Minister gave us a commitment that she will announce her plans for licensing laws in September. The Government’s proposals then go to Oireachtas Committee, the Dáil and Seanad. Get ready to contact your TDs!
Pleasure to meet
@GiveUsTheNight
in Leinster House this morning. We’re still waiting for the Government bill on licensing law reform. To think of all the political capital that has been made by Fine Gael, with announcement after announcement yet still no bill and still no change.
Irish unity gives people in the North a pathway back to EU membership. The EU institutions should begin to elaborate on the 2017 decision that cleared the way for the North to rejoin the EU in the event of United Ireland.
Sinn Féin do not oppose the bill. Sinn Féin did not call the vote and therefore did not appoint a teller to oppose. What is not democratic is guillotining the bill and denying Senators an opportunity to debate and oppose the developer-led shared equity scheme.
SF take voting against houses to a new level? Called vote to oppose Affordable Housing Bill in Seanad, then refused to put forward any tellers to enable vote to take place so the bill passed committee stage. SF texting & making calls seeking instructions from HQ -very democratic!
A majority of the Supreme Court has upheld a challenge brought by Tomás Heneghan (a UL graduate who is represented by FLAC) to the constitutionality of laws which exclude him from voting in elections to the Seanad University Panel.
The Seanad election needs a complete overhaul. It does not need tinkering or a quick political win. This proposal by Fianna Fáil is one of many contained in the Report and draft legislation of the all party Seanad Reform Implementation Group. They are trying to stall reform.
At the Sinn Féin Women’s Conference in Athlone yesterday. Very moved and inspired by the women in Sinn Féin and grateful to the guests who gave up their Saturday morning.
The
@CommunityFound
for Ireland is to start accepting applications from charities and non-profits for funding from the €6 million raised during RTÉ Does Comic Relief. Applications open Tuesday.
It’s mad seeing the empty billboards usually packed with upcoming gigs. Photographers have come together to provide work for a three week city-wide exhibition. They’re asking for donations toward the project. Take a look and share if you like the idea.
Our motion acknowledges the 30th anniversary of decriminalisation, the 40th anniversary of the ‘March from Liberty Hall to Fairview Park’ as well as the 40th anniversary of the Dublin LGBTQ Pride parade in June 1983.
In 2018, the Taoiseach issued an apology to the LGBTQI+ community on behalf of the State. The Government later committed to 'expunging' the historical convictions of gay and bi men. This is a commitment that Government have made, and that they should honour without delay.
RTÉ were in the Oireachtas yesterday and amongst other issues, I urged them to use the empty space on their campus for artist spaces. There is an absolute scarcity of affordable, safe and accessible artist workspaces in Dublin City.
This report by
@LouiseByrneNews
and the feature on Prime Time last night again illustrates how hostile Dublin is for renters. Extortionate rents need to come down. They need to be frozen for three years. And people need security of tenure so that we have sustainable communities!
Counterintuitively, data suggests that rent levels haven't fallen dramatically during the Covid-19 pandemic. But that is far from the full picture, reports

Fab chats with youth workers and young people this afternoon. We talked about lowering the voting age to 16 in local and European elections - something I’ve worked on for many years. Delighted to see it as one of 4 key asks of

The time is now to extend the vote!
Hey! I am hiring a Secretarial Assistant. This is a full-time position in Leinster House. The deadline for applications is 5pm on 24th June 2022.

We also approach a half century of LGBT civil rights activism in this State - 50 years since a small group of trailblazers met and established the Sexual Liberation Movement in Trinity College in October 1973.
Some little runt tried to rob my bike outside the house last night. Turns out the plastic Tesco fruit basket on the front doesn’t turn everyone off. If they had any brains they would have just taken the Brooks saddle. It’s worth half the bike.
Over the last couple of days I have been in the European Parliament. This morning,

Healthcare is a fundamental human right but the sexual health service is over subscribed and under resourced. I spent the day at the 20th annual Gay Health Forum listening to sexual health experts, workers, campaigners. Well done to the organisers. Loads of vibrant conversations.
We have legislation that would radically overhaul the Seanad but the Government have had no interest. Myself and others worked hard to develop it. It’s time to see it implemented so that a majority Senators are elected by the public. It’s not a lot to ask.
@NedoSullivan2
It looks like you’re the one stuck in the conflict narrative, Ned. You’ve clearly learnt nothing from the election. Ps. We can all smell the desperation of Micheál Martin and Fianna Fáil.
Unanimous Dáil support for Sinn Féin’s motion to join ICJ case against Israel would send a huge message to the world from Ireland. All TDs should back the Sinn Féin motion this week!
The €1.2 billion fine imposed on Facebook is the largest ever imposed under GDPR. Yet significant issues remain with GDPR and the Data Protection Commission. 75% of their decisions have been overruled by European counterparts. This fine was forced on the DPC.
McDonnell was the fifth man to die in the 1981 hunger strike. He narrowly missed out on a Dáil seat for the Sligo-Leitrim constituency during the strike. We remembered the hunger strikers today on the streets of Dublin - in Crumlin this morning and outside the GPO this afternoon.
With many of us now working from home, looking after our posture is more important than ever. Anna O'Brien, Senior Physiotherapist, HSE, gives her three tips for good posture practice while working from home.

Walking back from the canal, I popped into
@RichBarracks
for a nosey as they’ve recently re-opened. What a treat. I got a guided tour from Fergus Whelan! Get on it, you can book your place for his walking tours here:
It has certainly been one of the highlights of my political activism to have had the chance to work with David for so long in the Seanad. I hope in retirement that he enjoys a new freedom and a new rhythm and can finish whatever has been left undone. XO 🌈

A pleasure to meet with the Brussels - Irish Unity group yesterday . They have been doing important work, bringing the conversation about a united Ireland to Brussels and the EU institutions.
Meeting with Irish Senator

We agreed that the Irish Government must ensure Northern Ireland remains a strong focus of EU-UK relationship 🇮🇪🇪🇺
Thanks to
@MacManusChris
for arranging the meeting.
Ireland now has the benefit of learning from the successful reduction of the voting age in Wales and Scotland. The current Programme for Government commits to “examine the Scottish experience...in order to draw conclusions”. No steps have been taken on this commitment.
🗣We’re holding a community discussion on Monkeypox.🦠
We’ll hear from experts leading the response and folks who’ve had the virus. We’ll share the resources we’ve developed and discuss what else we need, including access to vaccine.

Meanwhile, young people get on with political campaigning: leading school strikes for climate action; helping secure an Irish language act in the six counties; and driving Leaving Cert reform.

"Senator Warfield said that spaces have closed because of “rip-off insurance,” and because of “archaic” licensing as well as ‘extortionate” licensing fees that he said are crippling businesses and cultural activity".
I was at the Mpower impact report launch on Saturday listening to
@Adlers1
talk about two incredible years of sexual health work for gay and bi men in Ireland.
Tonight in Dublin, I was at the launch of Irish Journalists at Work. While the level of full time permanent employment is 74%, it’s worrying that this falls to 61% for journalists under the age of 30.
Good to see.
Rather than focus on the Loughinisland killers, the police raided the homes and offices of filmmakers and journalists who made No Stone Unturned.
BREAKING.
