I've been working for 20 years to turn thoughts & prayers into action and legislation. Today
@GovTimWalz
signed two gun safety provisions into law that will save lives. Thanks to my colleagues for your partnership and to the advocates for your tireless work and dedication
#mnleg
In the states that require a background check before every handgun sale:
48% fewer suicides by gun.
46% fewer women shot to death by their domestic partner.
48% fewer police officers who die by handgun fire.
Criminal background checks work.
#mnleg
Today, hundreds rallied in support of two gun violence prevention measures. The Senate majority has said, “we don’t have time” for a year and a half. We know these bills will save lives, but first we need a public hearing on it in the Senate!

SCHOOL SHOOTING PREVENTED:
California’s red flag law just prevented a school shooting. A student made multiple threats to shoot up his school and there were multiple firearms in the home. Using the red flag law- the guns were removed.
Right now we should b meeting in the Judiciary Public Safety Conf Comm, but
@SenWarrenLimmer
who holds the gavel today refuses to meet. I call it dereliction of duty, abdication of responsibility, legislative malpractice. We should be working, not stonewalling.

While the MN Senate stood in solidarity w the people of Ukraine standing against Russian aggression,
@OmarFatehMN
undermined our message of unity and falsely declared equivalency w the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Neither real nor moral equivalency here.

(1/3) Unfortunately, Rep. Ilhan Omar has once again made clearly anti-Semitic public statements. While I was prepared to give her an opportunity to assuage my doubts, instead she has reinforced them. She cannot constantly make statements that suggest she was "ignorant" of the...
Classic antisemitic trope, recycled by the Left, amplified by Mpls elected official. See sign. There is no ambiguity here. Words matter. Will anyone on the Left join me in condemning this racist post?
@antisemitism
@StopAntisemites
Today, Minneapolis City Council voted 9-3 to advance a ceasefire resolution that calls for an end to the genocide happening in Palestine. We take a final vote on Thursday.
I stand with Comm. Nancy Leppink as she has fought for tougher safety standards for MN workers. I am appalled by the Sen majority’s attempt to undermine the Commissioner’s work, esp during this time of crisis. By this ambush, MN GOP proves they can’t be trusted to govern.

In Judaism we say "May her memory be for a blessing." We are all blessed to have lived in a world shaped by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a singular force for justice and an inspiration to generations. Rest well, Justice. We'll take it from here.
Yesterday a group of students were escorted out of a Senate Judiciary Committee while pushing for a hearing on bills to reduce gun violence. I support their goals: to advance a serious discussion on solutions to gun violence, we must have a committee hearing.
(3/3) ... maybe Rep. Omar should take the time to educate herself on the history of world anti-Semitism and its horrifying consequences rather than promoting it.
The Senate GOP told us today that “beyond [hardening schools], the rest of the issues related to [gun violence] will have to wait until another day.” I ask the GOP: how long?
#mnleg
Weeks after the Parkland deaths
Months after the Las Vegas massacre
Years after children died at Sandy Hook
Decades after teenagers perished at Columbine
Still, Senate GOP only indicates there “may be an informational hearing.” Our children want more. They demand change.

Today, we introduced two bills aimed at curbing gun violence - crime and suicides. Tomorrow, they could save lives. Minnesotans from both parties, gun owners and non-owners, urban and rural, support these measures. It’s time to make them law!
#mnleg
Today in Hibbing, Senate Judiciary & Pub Safety heard my two bills, crim bckgrnd checks for private purchases & extreme risk protection orders. These measures won’t stop all gun violence, but they’ve proven in other states to mitigate violence and save lives.
#mnleg
This week,
@jbeckerfinn
and I introduced a bill that would raise the minimum age to 21 to purchase or possess an assault weapon. If 20-year-olds are too young to drink a beer, they are too young to possess weapons designed for war.
#mnleg
(2/3) ... anti-Semitic implications of what she says or publishes, as she has been educated by myself and others on numerous occasions. I condemn her recent tweets in the strongest terms and call upon her to refrain from making future such comments. In the long term...
The point of gun violence prevention is to take action before someone is shot when we see and know someone is a danger to themselves or others. My red flag bill would do just that.
#mnleg
(1/7) Once again, Rep. Omar has made statements recognizable by their anti-Semitic meaning and impact. This time, she questions the loyalty to America of Jews who also support Israel. This classic “dual loyalty” slur has been used for centuries to justify isolating, punishing...
In the 4 weeks after Parkland, MN schools reported 19 threats, causing lockdowns, closures & arrests. Nationwide, an avg. of 70 threats/incidents reported each day since - up from the usual 10. The MN Senate GOP majority has yet to hear a bill related to gun violence.
#mnleg
Thank you to Students Demand Action for a great discussion on gun violence prevention. These students are outstanding and in the fall will be voting, many for the first time. If our adults won’t get this done, these young adults will.
#mnleg
I support the emergency school funding plan put forth by
@GovMarkDayton
. Our children will not have another chance to experience this upcoming school year with more resources; now is the only time for them, and it is the only time for us to step up to the plate.

#MNSenate
today, Majority Leader Gazelka statements related to police reform: "We may have hearings, and we may take some action, but we may not" "I'm not saying that we'll take action, but I'm not saying that we will not take action" 😂 I hope this is clear to you.
.
@GovTimWalz
released his
#OneMinnesota
budget proposal. It includes the Extreme Risk Protection Order bill & legislation to expand gun buyer background checks. MNs overwhelmingly supported the Govs agenda before the election & these bills were a centerpiece to it. Thank you Gov!
I’m renewing this announcement from earlier in November. I’m pleased to announce that I intend to run for re-election to the MN Senate. It’s been my mission in the Senate to make MN more inclusive by passing progressive policies. Yet, there’s still much to be done.
Super weekend! Sunday had special energy:
@KeithEllison
,
@LarryKraftSLP
, & I hosted a joint
#EnvironmentalJustice

@SenRonLatz
too, abt how our work is intertwined. Collaboration & partnership in a time of division - a great message for the doors.
I detest the health vs. economics argument when it comes to
#COVID19
. This is not a choice. In South Dakota, a non-stay-at-home state, unemployment has skyrocketed as more people become ill. Here in the MN Senate
#mnleg
, some argue for “opening up” MN & hoping for the best. (1/3)
Tonight we rallied in support of saving lives. We must work to prevent gun violence in MN. Let’s start by hearing and then passing my red flag bill and criminal background check for private purchases bill. They are proven, bipartisan measures that save lives.
#mnleg
This is Senator & Doctor

Another day of
@SenWarrenLimmer

@PaulGazelka
still doing nothing.

Every community w/ a bonding project should contact

The Extreme Risk Protection Orders and Criminal Background Check amendments I will offer tomorrow will save lives. Our state will equip law enforcement with the right tools to step in without harming responsible gun owners and their ability to purchase a gun.
#mnleg
I am pleased today to join students,
@GovMarkDayton
&
@melissahortman
to again urge our elected officials to enact gun violence prevention laws this session. We still have more than two weeks to pass legislation and protect our families and communities from gun violence.

Attorney General
@KeithEllison
is prosecuting violent crime and standing up to some of the most wealthy and powerful corporations when they take advantage of Minnesotans. The work he's doing takes courage and experience.
Ellison's opponent,
@JimForMN
, is just not up to the job.
Doug Wardlow said he supported criminal background checks to purchase firearms, but later said the exact opposite to the Gun Owners Caucus. I know where
@keithellison
stands. He won't lie to different crowds. We need leaders like Keith as AG who will support common sense laws.
Today, the Committee on Banned Bills heard my bill that would extend criminal background checks for private gun purchases. Since the GOP-controlled Senate won’t give this a hearing w/o conditions, we’ve offered another way to include public debate.
#mnleg
Senate Jud&Pub Safety hearing on gun laws highlights how current laws are inadequate in separating violent people from obtaining & possessing firearms. My two bills, crim bkgrnd checks & extreme risk prot orders, which I proposed yrs ago, will close those gaps.

For years, I have introduced gun violence reduction bills for expanded background checks and extreme risk protection orders. This week, I spoke with

Thank you voters of Senate District 46. I am honored to earn your support to represent the community for another two years. The real work is still yet to come!

@paulgazelka
You obstructed preparation and encouraged reckless behavior. You denied the seriousness of the threat. You have knowingly exposed your Senate colleagues and staff. And now you claim exactly the opposite. We know the truth. Your gall is appalling.

This week I had the great honor of once again being sworn-in to serve as your State Senator. With a historic budget surplus and our new DFL majority in the Senate, we have a tremendous opportunity to move Minnesota forward and make real improvements in the lives of Minnesotans.

I’m filing to represent MN SD46 in 2021-22. In light of COVID-19, now more than ever is it important to pass progressive policies like more affordable housing & healthcare, & ensuring paid family leave for all, in addition to combating climate change & gun violence.
#FlipMNSenate
“An overwhelming 9 out of 10 Minnesota voters also favor mandatory criminal background checks on all gun sales... including those sold privately and at gun shows.”
Unions serve as a collective voice for working people, provide wage increases & affordable healthcare for many, & play a pivotal role in protecting the working class. The SCOTUS decision yesterday only aids in degrading generations of progressive working policies.

Senate majority bonding bill is a missed opportunity to invest in public safety, higher ed, and the preservation of state assets. Every time the Senate GOP neglects these projects and puts them off for later years they only become more expensive for taxpayers.

Senate GOP says their violence prevention bills will “make sure guns are kept out of the wrong hands.” These bills are a nice add to my ERPO & expanded bkgrnd checks bills. But only enhancing penalties is not a prevention plan. MNs support my bills. Let’s pass those too.
