It was on Feb. 21, 2002, 20 yrs ago, that a team of FBI agents knocked on the door and asked us to sit down. "Bad?" we asked - "Yes". "Are you sure?" - "Yes". The only thing I remember next was lifting my hand up and down, up and down, marveling how human biology can continue

October 10 marks the birthday of my late son, Danny, who would have been 60 today. A diehard humanist who wanted to believe that man is not a predator to other men. We hoped that his brutal murder would mark a turning point in the history of man inhumanity to man. Saturday's…

Dear readers of this educational channel. I've lost my dear wife this afternoon, my northern-star and my college sweetheart. Need to take a few days off. Hope to be back.
We must remember that the holocaust was preceded by a successful program of "critical race theory". In April, 1938, Nobel Prize winner J. Stark explained in the British weekly "Nature" why Jewish professors at German universities must be replaced by "under-represented" Germans.
Palestinians greatest mistake, which has caused them tragedy after tragedy, was and is to conceptualize Israel as a colonizer, rather than a home-comer. This conception dictates that, if you make its life miserable enough, the colonizer will quit, like Algiers. Palestinians (and…
500,000 European Jews, including my family, owe their lives to Lord Balfour, whose 1917 declaration gave them a license to escape antisemitic Europe and rebuild their homeland in Eretz-Israel. My grandfather was one of them (1924) and my mother was another (1935). The rest of…

I will be saying Kaddish today (the Jewish prayer of mourners) and lay a flower on Danny's tombstone. I will then join Benjamin Lapidus in singing the Kaddish in a melody that can shake the gates of heaven loose:
This is precisely what statisticians used to say. "If you can predict well the next data point, they you understand the reality or the process that generates that point". They said it and said it until Causal Inference proved them wrong. Understanding takes more than prediction.…

Thanks for sharing. I'm going to put on a blue & white Kippa for my next class at UCLA. I heard some Palestinian students would complain of "feeling unsafe", so I'll ask them politely to leave.
My Jewish husband started wearing his Magen David necklace on the outside of his shirt. Proud. Prominent. He got some scowls. And he got some smiles.
Small smiles with eyes full of empathy. I asked him why risk it? He replied:
“For those smiles.”
My beloved wife was laid to rest on Thursday, next to our son, Danny, overlooking San Fernando Valley. I am grateful for the flood of condolences and support that you sent my way, which I wish I could acknowledge it in person. Will be back soon with renewed explorations of "WHY".
Dear readers of this educational channel. I've lost my dear wife this afternoon, my northern-star and my college sweetheart. Need to take a few days off. Hope to be back.
Danny's official Yahrzeit is tomorrow, February 1st. Tonight we'll light the Soul Candle (Ner Neshama) and ask him to speak on our behalf, a world gone mad, in places where humanity, wisdom and courage once reigned.

This question annoys ALL students (and professors) of ML, but they are afraid to ask. Thanks for raising it in this "no hand waving" forum. Take two causal diagrams:
X-->Y and X<--Y, and ask a neural network to decide which is more probable, after seeing 10 billion samples. 1/n
What is wrong about model-free causality? Instead of the programmer building in their assumptions or knowledge into causality diagrams, why not let neural networks descend to and generate the most probable causality diagrams?
