We just passed the repeal of 50-a. This police secrecy statute has been a threat to our public safety for far too long. This repeal is a victory that advocates have been fighting for for years, & it’s a critical step in meaningfully changing policing in New York #BlackLivesMatter.

We need to transition to a humane, restorative justice system, which demands that we vastly reduce the incarcerated population. Spending billions on new facilities in order to avoid enacting systemic changes is a step backward. We CAN close Rikers without building new jails.

Transit is a basic necessity for New Yorkers: providing access to jobs, community, places of learning and worship. Governor Hochul must prioritize #FixTheMTA in her budget: freezing fares, funding frequency and making buses free.

This week, the Senate passed my bill to expand language access in New York’s 2020 Census outreach. In the last census, nearly a quarter of all people living in our state were NOT counted. Our hard-to-count communities deserve better, and in 2020 we will do better.
