We just passed the repeal of 50-a. This police secrecy statute has been a threat to our public safety for far too long. This repeal is a victory that advocates have been fighting for for years, & it’s a critical step in meaningfully changing policing in New York #BlackLivesMatter.
@jamaaltbailey @SenatorParker @NYSenBenjamin #NYSenate Bill S8496, sponsored by Senator @jamaaltbailey, passed 40-22 (unofficial). Relates to the disclosure of law enforcement disciplinary records; and to repeal section 50-a of the civil rights law relating thereto:.

The @NYSenate just passed my bill to require that all single-occupancy bathrooms in state-owned or operated buildings be designated gender-neutral 🚽.

💥We just passed #HALTSolitary! This monumental achievement wouldn’t be possible without the efforts led by survivors of solitary and their family members, and I am thankful for their tireless advocacy.

In his #SOTS address, Gov. Cuomo made one thing clear: he hopes to pass the buck for New York’s well-being onto the Federal government. But we will not forget that it was his decades of cutting taxes for the rich and slashing of services that left us so vulnerable to COVID-19.

🚨IMPORTANT update for people who have been waiting more than 72 hours to hear back about their unemployment claims. The problem might be due to a glitch in the @NYSLabor website. See important information about the glitch and a step-by-step guide on how to fix it below.

It’s time to pass the Safer New York Act, cut the NYPD’s budget, and invest in our communities and social services. #Repeal50A .

TRANSIT UPDATE 🚆: The @USDOT is sending $15 million to bring SEVEN new elevators to the Broadway Junction subway complex in East New York. Before COVID, the station served nearly 100,000 people per weekday, but remained inaccessible to riders in wheelchairs.

NY is failing to meet its climate protection obligations. In this Op-Ed, @sarahana and I implore Governor Hochul to fulfill her mandate to build the public renewables that will dramatically reduce our carbon emissions, create union jobs, and lower bills.

New Yorkers need a long term solution to the housing crisis created by COVID, and that solution is the COVID-19 Housing Relief For All Act. This legislation will support both renters and small landlords all across our State. It is time for us to #TaxTheRich, and Invest in our NY.

I am so grateful that my team was able to intervene on one vendor’s behalf, but no one in our community should have to endure over-policing and harassment. Join me tomorrow to call for improving our transit system & creating opportunities for vendors to work free from harassment.
RALLY❗️We’re coming together to say NO to over-policing, YES to fair working conditions for vendors, and YES to subway and bus improvements!. 🗓 Mon. Nov 11th.⏰ 12PM.📍Broadway Junction Subway Stop. #NoNewCops.#FixTheSubway.#LifttheCaps

Tonight I joined Brooklyn College’s Department of Urban Sustainability and @nycDSA for a town hall, where we discussed what it will take for New York to switch to a 100% renewable, democractically controlled, & publicly owned utility, and how legislation can help us get there ⚡️

Join us tomorrow! Monday, 12:00PM at Broadway Junction. We’re rallying for street vendors and for our communities. We all deserve to be able to use transit and share public space without fear of being criminalized. See you there.
RALLY❗️We’re coming together to say NO to over-policing and to tell Governor Cuomo (@NYGovCuomo) to cancel the 500 new cops and invest in more buses, trains and service instead! . 🗓 Mon. Nov 11th.⏰ 12PM.📍Broadway Junction Subway Stop. #NoNewCops.#FixTheSubway.#CuomosMTA

Yesterday, hundreds of renters and homeless New Yorkers rallied in Albany to say: Our state budget must include a housing plan with strong eviction protections. Any housing plan must include #GoodCause.

Here is a well written piece by @ShabazzStuart on why we should legalize public consumption and possession of alcoholic beverages. The “gray area” of enforcing public drinking must be eliminated as it has led to discriminatory policing in our communities.

Governor Hochul is taking the decisive action that our state needs in a difficult situation by imploring the Biden administration to work with NY to compassionately and competently welcome asylum-seekers and refugees. Work authorizations must be expedited by the federal gov’t.
@USNationalGuard Asylum seekers are looking for jobs, and employers are looking for workers – all that’s missing is the legal work status to make that a reality. The federal government must expedite work authorizations so that people can immediately begin working.

With less than one week until May 1st, New Yorkers need rent relief that leaves no home behind. That’s why my office has worked with community groups to introduce a #ReliefForAll bill: A crisis response that tenants, property owners and businesses can all get behind.

Price gouging allows drug vendors to dramatically increase drug prices on scarce medications, making them harder for New Yorkers to afford. It is unacceptable that New Yorkers are dying because they can’t afford medication. Today, we voted to end price gouging in NYS!.
@NYSenatorRivera @Gaughran4Senate @jessicaramos @SenatorParker @SenJoeAddabbo @NYSSenatorMRM @dianesavino #NYSenate Bill S3654, sponsored by Senator @SalazarSenate, passed 58-1 (unofficial). Relates to price gouging of medicine:.

In many places throughout the world open consumption of alcohol is already permitted, and a bill that I have introduced with @Bobby4Brooklyn would make it lawful for a person in NYS to consume or possess an open container of alcohol in public.

Small landlords and tenants both know that the eviction moratorium is not a solution to our looming housing crisis. S8802, introduced by myself, and @yuhline in the Assembly, would #CancelRent and mortgage payments throughout the duration of this ongoing crisis.
NEW op-ed from small landlords in Albany. ---> Tenants & small landlords agree: lifting the eviction moratorium is premature, and not the solution to the pandemic rent crisis. @zellnor4ny @KarinesReyes87 .

CUNY is facing $67 million in budget cuts to Community College programs that address food insecurities, child care, & tutoring programs. At a time where 1 in 4 CUNY students are food insecure, the City’s proposed budget cuts to CUNY are unacceptable. #NoCutsToCUNY #FUNDCUNYNOW.

Ending solitary confinement is the floor, not the ceiling. No person should have to endure the trauma of constant isolation and degradation. The introduction of the #EndSolitary Confinement Act by @RepCori is a much-needed step toward ending torture for those in federal custody.
Rep. Cori Bush (D-Mo.) led Democrats in introducing legislation to end solitary confinement in federal prisons, jails and detention centers, saying that the practice is “psychological torture.”

It is shocking to see the Chair of the state Democratic Party propose to weaken Democrats and strengthen Republicans, just to get back at @NYWFP. It would be a betrayal of our ideals & our constituents if Democrats in the legislature allow this to happen.

Strengthening tenant protections requires that we build on the success of the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act by passing Good Cause eviction. Significantly increasing IAI limits, resulting in high rent increases on rent-stabilized units, would be an unacceptable step.
NEW: 38 NYS electeds say NO to rolling back rent stabilization in exchange for a gutted #GoodCause:. @SenGianaris: "The people of this great state deserve no less than our full efforts to protect all tenants, not pit one group of renters against another.”.
