New York City needs new leadership — with a relentless focus on making the city more affordable, safer, and more livable.
I’m Senator Zellnor Myrie, and that’s why I’m taking the first steps to explore a run for Mayor in 2025.
Join us:
I was pepper sprayed and handcuffed tonight along with
@YourFavoriteASW
. We came in solidarity and to keep the peace. We are still processing what happened.
THREAD: Now that curfew is lifted, it’s a good time to discuss reverse warrants. What's a reverse warrant you say? Basically, if you were in the vicinity of a suspected crime, the police can issue a warrant for your arrest. They “geolocate” you by using cell phone data. (1/6)
Yesterday cops in Red Hook confiscated a table of PPE because it was “electioneering” (it was not) and now, on the same day, a video of a cop, very clearly, electioneering. We need answers. Now.
@NYPDnews
@NYPDShea
@NYCMayor
Working with
@STOPSpyingNY
, we intro’d a bill that would outlaw this practice. I hope to get that passed, but NYPD could end the practice right now and give us assurances that exercising our constitutional rights won’t get us in a database. (5/6)
“That can’t be right!” Sorry, it is. Even if you’ve done absolutely nothing wrong or criminal, you can have a warrant out just for being around. Police departments across the country are already doing it. (2/6)
So
@NYPDnews
should tell us right now whether they have, currently are, or intend to use reverse warrants resulting from peaceful protests. Reverse warrants are constitutionally dubious under normal circumstances, they are downright dangerous now. (4/6)
Again, it is legal to use cell phone data that shows you were in an area of a suspected crime to issue a warrant. This is important because thousands of us have taken to the streets to protest injustice and were met with handcuffs, especially under curfew. (3/6)
I can’t retweet the video because I have my own trauma around violent interactions with police but let me just say that
@NYPDnews
does this in my district on the reg and we’ve gotten reports of cooperation with feds in recent weeks. Come march with us in Brownsville.
I find it difficult to reconcile outrage at Trump’s tax cuts for the rich and praise for
#HQ2
. The same fallacious argument undergirds both; that public $ will drive the rich to invest in the rest of us. Hasn’t happened before and won’t again. We will

Y’all thought Stacey Abrams was too confident in her own abilities when she said she could be VP but now when her brilliance saving the country she’s a Queen?
Respect black women from the jump and stop beclowning yourselves.
I wanna hear from
@NYPDShea
and
@NYPDnews
whose police department pepper-sprayed and cuffed me (and MANY others) when we were peacefully protesting police brutality last year. Whose union endorsed this president.
And no, you can't blame this insurrection on bail reform.
I mean this with 0% snark: how is this not wildly offensive? This is an artful monument to death and tragedy being sold by the state. I’m legit perplexed.
The FBI is seeking to identify individuals instigating violence in Washington, D.C. We are accepting tips and digital media depicting rioting or violence in and around the U.S. Capitol on January 6. If you have information, visit .
Thank you to the people of Central Brooklyn for putting their trust in me. I am so honored to be representing the community that raised me and made me the man I am today. I look forward to fighting for all of you in Albany as your next State Senator!
This is about police brutality.

Shirley dared to run for President when everyone, including her own party and white feminists, told her not to. They mocked her then but laud her now so on her birthday today, show some love and respect for the real queen, Brooklyn’s own, Congresswoman Shirley Chilsolm 👑
Good Morning. The largest police department in the country still hasn’t condemned the violence and insurrection at our nation’s capitol. Will today be the day

⚠️ Scam Alert ⚠️
Opponents of (mild, first-step) police reform are trotting out the same playbook that has derailed progress in the past. DON’T BUY IT.
It is an attempt to shift narratives. Don’t let them seize it. Keep marching; keep educating.
As you may know, on 5/29/2020, I was pepper-sprayed & arrested while attending a protest at the Barclays Center.
I am currently suing the NYPD in federal court around this event, but concurrently, a CCRB complaint was filed (not by me) and the process just concluded.

The Yemeni-American community organized a historical bodega boycott in the wake of the Muslim ban 4 years ago.
Today we celebrated with the opening of the first Yemeni coffee shop in NYC. This is our country. Congrats Qahwah Coffee house!!
I try not be the salty state legislator in these discussions but PLEASE remember that state legislatures will be the bulwark against a hostile Court/Congress.
Also, conservatives have been grooming Amy Barrett for decades. We gotta build our bench too. Remember the states.
On 3/31/1817, the NYS legislature abolished slavery in this state.
On 3/31/2019, we voted to reform the state’s criminal justice system. It was a vote to begin the journey of freeing my people from mass incarceration and the honor of my life to be a part of this historic time.
Qualified Immunity has allowed cops to shoot first and think later. The U.S. Supreme Court has provided an impenetrable shield to police brutality with this doctrine and it’s time for it to end.
@jamaaltbailey
and I are introducing a bill to do just that.
Let’s be 100% clear about what
@NYCMayor
is doing: using genuine fear and anxiety for political gain.
This isn’t about a true public safety agenda that brings all policymakers and stakeholders to the table to solve complex problems.
This is politics. Period. 🧵1/9
The President can’t legally defund NYC.
But you certainly can by not filling out the Census.
28 days left.
Get to it.
(And please check Black if and only if you are, in fact, Black)
Every rent increase should come with a notice that this was a policy choice by this mayoral administration. If the Mayor and RGB believe in the force of their argument, own it and throw your name on the renewal lease notice. 2.4 million New Yorkers should know who’s responsible.
Dead children. Dead adults. Billions in healthcare costs. Untold local, state, and national trauma.
None of it is enough to remove the grip the gun lobby has on our political system (including, in short order, SCOTUS).
Put up or shut up. Period.
We are hearing reports that
@NYGovCuomo
wants to prevent the
@BOENYC
from rectifying the issue by stopping them from sending corrected ballots.
This is straight up disenfranchisement and an affront to our democracy. The vendor screwed up and is trying to fix it. Let them!
As the chair of the Elections committee in the NY Senate and author of 20+ election-related bills, I think about voter suppression more than the average politician.
To call RCV voter suppression, or compare it to a poll tax, is **incredibly** wrong and dangerous. Stop it.
Over the past few days, the Strategic Response Group has also brutalized peaceful protesters like me and
@YourFavoriteASW
. Y’all got robocop armor on while frontline workers had to use trash bags for gowns at the height of COVID-19.
Over the past few days, the Strategic Response Group has effected hundreds of arrests of violent protest agitators and business looters. Our main priority is protecting the peaceful protesters and ensuring the safety of all New Yorkers

Think about the false choice law enforcement and others are presenting to the community:
(a) Do not criticize us, our history, or our practices and we will keep you safe; OR
(b) Criticize our structural failures and you will die from crime.
We reject this choice.
(Judge is in quotation marks because he’s actually a Deputy Commissioner of the NYPD. That’s right; the person charged with deciding whether an NYPD officer has broken the rules or law is…on the NYPD payroll. I have bill to abolish this state law.)
I’m so sick and tired of this comment. We march against gun violence ALL THE TIME. The implication that those of us who care about accountability, fairness, and justice in the legal system don’t care about the violence in our own communities is false and dangerous.
.
@NYCMayor
says BLM protestors should also be protesting everyday crime - an argument he often makes due to high rate of gun violence in predominantly Black/Latino neighborhoods in NYC.
End prison slave labor. Restore their voting rights. Make expungement automatic for all who have served their time. This is what true rehabilitation would look like.
BREAKING: Gov. Newsom signs law allowing inmate firefighters in California to have records expunged, clearing the way for them to become professional firefighters once they are released from prison.
Today, my colleagues and I passed our first pieces of legislation to reform and improve our voting system in New York State. We started with early voting, a bill I introduced. I want to share a few words on why this is so important. (Thread)
Just voted the
#Repeal50a
bill out of the Codes committee in the
@NYSenate
. Thank you Chair
@jamaaltbailey
for your stewardship. Big week ahead. Stay tuned.
I’m gonna have a lot more to say once I get better, but I wanna thank everyone for the messages, emails, and calls. I was discharged from the hospital this week and am home recovering.
Get tested. Wear a mask. Be safe.
THREAD: I’ve been tweeting all morning and I need to step away but it’s been so hard to capture in words what I’m feeling. Gonna try to channel my energy into what I can do as a legislator and black man in this country. (1/15)
It cannot be overstated how much of shake in confidence this vendor error is.
But I’m gonna ask all New Yorkers to dig deep and do something hard: focus on the immediate solution.
The President will be using NYC as an example of voter fraud tonight or tomorrow. 1/7
Some of y’all talk so tough on this app but have never talked to a tenant facing eviction or a family that just lost their child to gun violence. Stop letting these “likes” gas you. People are hurting. Do work.
Y’all don’t get to disassociate yourself from this. And by y’all I mean every single Republican that acquiesced to the political mainstreaming of white supremacy. This is you, not “them.”
The City of Buffalo has sued bad actors in the gun industry for their role in the gun epidemic that is the leading cause of death for children in the United States. This is historic. 1/5
Everyone has their own story about how they came to doing justice work and I want to share part of mine.
This is Richard Moore. He will be killed by the state of South Carolina on Dec 4. I worked on his case as part of the capital punishment clinic at Cornell Law School. 1/7
Last week an ICE agent shot a Brooklyn man in the face with impunity. This week they are sending militarized border patrol into our city. We need unequivocal, publicly stated support from the state and city. This is not a damn drill.
There’s
@MaxRose4NY
again hanging out with
#TEAMCrime
…New York State Assemblymember and Senators from
#Brooklyn
who voted for the botched bail law that has made you and your family less safe.
Defiant Staten Island pub owner Daniel Presti slammed his car into a sheriff’s deputy in a desperate effort to evade arrest.
He was being sought for continuing to serving patrons in defiance of coronavirus restrictions, authorities said.
There are a lot of good reform ideas for the NYCBOE. There are also ideas for statewide reform (other local BOEs have problems, too). I’m committed to exploring all of them, and was set to hold a hearing this session before I was sidelined with covid for months 1/5
Please, please, please listen to every non-answer

Unclutch your pearls. Cardi B is one of the most effective communicators of this generation — and not just in entertainment— so if

I want to share (with permission) an essay written by a Black elementary student in my district last week. Brought me to tears.
Keep marching. Our ancestors brought us this far and our children are counting us to bring them further.

@NYPDShea
has tweeted at least 4 times since the insurrection at the Capitol. Not a single word to the New Yorkers he’s sworn to protect condemning the violence or assuring us that our government buildings are safe.
Stand back and stand by I guess.
It’s been an emotional couple of days, and I’m gonna have much more to say on the housing history that is being made in our legislature, but I just wanna send love and gratitude to the tenants of my district and all over the state. You did this.
THREAD: Today is the third of Tammuz, the Yahrzeit (anniversary of passing) of the Rebbe, one of the most influential rabbis in modern history.
I want to share a story about the Rebbe and Shirley Chisholm that shows why our communities have more in common than different (1/6)
Let me make something absolutely clear: if you see my mom in the district, do not, under any circumstances, use that opportunity to hound her or bash the office.
When you see ME in the district, please hound and/or bash. She does not work for me. She is my mother. Respect that.
The implications cannot be overstated. She was a Brooklyn girl who changed the world.
But there is No Time for rhetoric. Find your f**king spine and stand up to the goon who y’all think Is stupid but who has ALREADY reshaped the courts beyond recognition.
Two years ago today the Democrats in our district hired me to serve them in Brooklyn. It’s been the honor of my life to serve the community that raised me and as long as you’ll have me, I’ll keep fighting for you. (Look how beautiful and ageless my mom looks 🥰)
Welcome to reality, where you do need ID to register to vote and just like a driver’s license, don’t need to present it every time you get into your car.
A reoccurring theme at the DNC was requesting your absentee ballots NOW but in New York the law did not allow for that.
Now, it does. The governor signed our bill (S.8783A) into law yesterday so, NYC, you can go request your ballot RIGHT NOW at
Go now!
The CDC’s “moratorium” is inadequate in many respects (no protection for homeowners/commercial tenants, no rent/mortgage forgiveness, landlord can still sue, etc.) but is a recognition — even by an administration hostile to working families — of how dire the eviction crisis is.
Here’s an 18th century map of Jamaica, a British colony, that isn’t demarcated by towns, but by slave-owner estates. That red circle tells me everything I need to know about the Crown.
Yesteday, I did my “Senator on Your Block” on one of the most violent strips in the district.
I spoke to a young brother who had just been released from prison last month and who was a victim of a drive-by shooting. I asked him how I could help and he said “I need a job.”
This ruling is EXACTLY why New Yorkers have zero faith in the system. From the beginning I have maintained that in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, I felt compelled to attend this protest both as a Black citizen of this country and as a State Senator. 4/17
This a thread of Census receipts. The state failed us.
In April of 2019, the budget allocated $20 million for Census outreach. It wasn't nearly enough, but we knew how important this Census would be and made a down payment to get New Yorkers counted. 1/13
Y’all have the audacity to tell a legislator to “look over his shoulder” while your members are the only people in society with a literal license to kill. Then you wonder why you’re losing.
Keep looking over your shoulder, Mike. You had to bring in your billionaire buddies and your Pres/VP candidates to barely squeak by. How much did you spend per vote? And how much will you have to spend after voters suffer through 2 more years in
#NoBailNY
?
Tomorrow will be my first day legislating on the Senate Floor, and I can barely contain my excitement. Stay tuned for big news tomorrow as we begin our first day of fighting to protect and expand the most fundamental of our rights: the right to vote.
50,000 families in my district — including my mother — live in a rent-stabilized apartment.
58% make less than $50k, and 30% pay more than half their income on rent.
Raising their rent by 9% is unconscionable and unacceptable.
We ain’t going down without a fight. Prepare.
Systemic inhumanity. Every single prison in this state needs a forensic audit and investigation to bring to light the cruelty inflicted on a daily basis.
Before you dish that hot take, read it aloud and consider whether you’d be comfortable if the victims and their loved ones were in the room. It’s okay to not speak.
Every Republican calling for “healing” should pledge to immediately support the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Act which would be the strongest protection against *actual* voter suppression in this country’s history. A no-brainer if this was about the integrity of our elections.
