Rain couldn't dampen spirits at Yonkers Pride on Saturday, as the city came together to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community which is an integral part of the diverse tapestry that is Westchester and New York.

We all share the same sunrise and rest under the same stars. Political disagreement can never justify violence among us. My statement below on the assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and Attack on State Senator John Hoffman:

A Korean War veteran, the 1st African American to chair the House Ways & Means Committee and a founding member of the Congressional Black Caucus, his legacy shaped a better future for generations. Rest in power, Congressman. Your fight and love for Harlem will never be forgotten.

We mourn the passing of trailblazing Congressman Charlie Rangel, the Lion of Lenox Avenue, a warrior and a champion for Harlem, New York and his nation. He carried his community in his heart and fought fiercely every day for justice and opportunity.

Women deserve equal pay for equal work. Today, women in New York earn 87 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earn. This gender pay gap, and disparity is dramatically greater for women of color.

We mourn the loss of Congresswoman Nita Lowey, a trailblazer, a true champion of women & families, and personal mentor. Her wisdom and support has guided me throughout my career in public service. Her legacy of integrity and service will continue to inspire for generations.
