One's 30s are a crucial period for professional advancement. Especially in so-called "greedy careers": those where returns to longer hours are non-linear. But one's mid 30s is also when most women's fertility starts to drop 🧵.

I am interested in the phenomenon through which smart ppl are blatantly wrong. Balaji is obviously smart. 3 ideas:.1) he’s lying for money .2) he’s memed himself into insane ideas due to audience capture .3) you don’t need to understand the world broadly to be good at one thing.

Even accomplished ppl change their priorities. Seeing old ppl dote on their families so much really changed my perspective and made me realise my priorities might shift.

Poast ur favourite moral innovation. Mine is presumption of innocence. Truly going against human nature and our impulse to jump to conclusions regarding guilt.

A lot of ppl have been asking for a skincare routine. As a biochemist I have researched this and I think you only need 4 things (in order of importance): sunscreen SPF 50, retinol (one that has retinaldehyde), moisturising cream & exfoliant. Maybe vitamin C. Products 👇.

A guy on LessWrong wrote a 24 mins post about something that does NOT exist (diamondoid bacteria) & is just a product of Eliezer's imagination. People laugh about that girl whose dissertation focuses on Marxist fluxes of metabolic energy, but what is this?

If I learned anything in grad school, it's that NO method can replace STARING at your raw data. This is literally a slide from my presentations. You need to get intimate with your data, know its ins & outs, become one with your data. Do it until you the lines between human and

Non-Bio ppl sometimes ask me how to get up to speed with Biology. Most recently, @PradyuPrasad. These ppl tend to be CS/Maths oriented. Their most common complaint is: “I find Biology interesting but gave up on learning it because it is so memorisation based.”. Thread:.

Ok. Real question. Has someone laid out a step-by-step explanation of a scenario where AI would kill us all? Like what exactly would happen?.

People greatly overestimate how much this “social power” translates into any actual power for women. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: being hit on at networking events is off-putting & it’s often harder to get into the networking circles that would actually give you.

"Young women often have a lot of social power, whereas, except for the fortunate few—the born rich, the strikingly handsome, the 6-foot-3—young men have none. Socially speaking, young men are shit"

Something I wish more people understood is how much scientific progress is slowed down for banal bureaucratic reasons. For example, I've had projects delayed for > half a year due to a need to redo ethics forms for working with human tissues, despite nothing material changing in.

Among reasonably smart people, the main differentiator is not raw intelligence, but interest in a topic. Maybe this does not hold true for pure maths, but for most topics it does.
