It's ethical to cure your own cancer. It's ethical to cure your own cancer. It's ethical to cure your own cancer. There's no debate to be had.
A scientist who successfully treated her own breast cancer by injecting the tumour with lab-grown viruses has sparked discussion about the ethics of self-experimentation

This is so bad. 1) no one will be swayed in their vote by this endorsement. It's pure virtue signalling. 2) it will just make ~ half of the voters distrust scientific institutions (there's even a study showing this is what happens).3) how could a political endorsement be.
Scientific American endorse Harris. Which is good and obviously a pro-evidenced based and scientific stance. Cue: all the data bros going eeeuuuhh science isn’t political and meeeeeh science shouldn’t take sides waaaah.

Unpopular opinion but I don't think we should do wealth transfers to people who'll pursue one of the most stable and remunerative careers. Fund people who would take risks they wouldn't have otherwise taken.
Beginning in the fall of 2024, Johns Hopkins University will provide tuition-free Medical School for most medical students and expand aid for future nurses and public health pioneers. Learn more:

Girls can wear the same dress actually and nothing bad happens. I do it all the time and generally speaking ppl think I look good. Also, men generally don’t care how many times you were the same dress. So it’s all in ur head.
Male privilege is wearing the same outfit multiple times to events while girls cant wear the same dress twice no matter how cute it is.

It’s notable the centre right party in UK celebrates not the possibility of achievement, but rather getting by on a stagnant and insufficient median wage by saving and not complaining. Highest virtue the youth can attain is not bothering the older rent seekers.
Katy works for me. She is single & earns less than 30k, rents a room for £775pcm in Central London, has student debt, £120 a month on travelling to work saves money every month, goes on foreign holidays & does not need to use a foodbank. Katy makes my point really well.

As someone who was born and raised in an ex-Communist country, I am always surprised how little regard young Westerners have for their magnificent civilisation. There were a lot of mistakes, indeed, but I FIRMLY believe all alternatives are worse. Romania is a small country. .
Over the past 24 hours, thousands of TikToks (at least) have been posted where people share how they just read Bin Laden’s infamous "Letter to America," in which he explained why he attacked the United States. The TikToks are from people of all ages, races, ethnicities, and

The whole proposing thing is a very American thing. In Romania, arguably more trad, women just decide they wanna marry you and they sort of push you into it. This is how my parents & most ppl I know did it. There’s no big “oh no he hasn’t proposed to me” thing.
Proposing to a man is one of the most pathetic things a woman can ever do. Do not do a man’s job for him ever. Also fyi causally dating multiple men simultaneously without the intention to marry is the hallmark of modern hook up culture which is finding women lonelier and more.

@StrangVirusLab @alanlparker What about the ethics of dying? People should be able to try if they are adults and willing to.

Because they are the jobs that pay well in the current environment. I can’t believe we need Girard or whatevs to explain this 😣.
Why do elite colleges pump students into the same five industries: law, medicine, tech, investing, and management consulting?. For answers, let’s turn to the philosopher René Girard.

This is how people operate when they don’t believe in anything. If you believe in a goal or a mission (in this case a relationship), you become delusional about it. I am deluded about my work and my love. I romanticise them and am crazy in it. I’m a warm blooded animal.

They have new evidence abt him engaging in human trafficking, rape and organised crime. What Romanian news outlets describe: taking advantage of poor, young naive women and promising them relationships in UK in order to recruit them into prostitution. This happens quite a lot.

I obviously disagree with this and think free speech is above all. But the thing ppl who care abt free speech should wonder where our culture went wrong such that decent but not genius guys like Walz, who simply absorb the surrounding culture, haven't internalised the.
Tim Walz: “There’s no guarantee to free speech on misinformation or hate speech and especially around our democracy”

As I keep saying, the scarcest resource in today's world is courage.
"An A+ Democratic Senate source of mine reckons that, of the 51 Ds, no more than half a dozen believe he still has a plausible chance in November and want him to stay in the race. The ratio on the House side, as best as I can tell, is roughly the same"

Whenever ppl talk abt how bad the American healthcare system is (and it has problems) & how great the NHS is, I try to remind them that it’s American money that fuels most of drug discovery. Europeans then get these drugs due to this free riding. Everything has a cost.
@Altimor Interesting piece in @TheEconomist on Europe as the free-rider continent (– you can go over the paywall by disabling JS). My hack is to enjoy the European lifestyle while working for north american companies remotely.

I was saying this exactly 2 years ago when it was highly unpopular and Evth since then has proven me right. Science aligning itself with politics has hurt it. And people at the top like Holden are responsible for it.
Since when do science magazine editors get to decide which policies are acceptable and which aren’t (& with strong words like “permissible”) ? That’s the purview of politics. Their only job is to make sure that they publish high quality science.

The cost of freaking out about AI . I owe so much to @ylecun & @beenwrekt . Last year, after chatGPT 4 was launched, I had a month or so of extreme anxiety. I hadn't engaged with doomer arguments before, so they sounded extremely appealing & new. Everyone on Twitter was extremely.

This is how the brain of a thinking person works & Thiel, whatever else one might think of him, is a thinking person. You can be pro-capitalist and understand that if a part of a system (e.g. housing) is broken, people won't buy into it.
Wild. This leaked email from Peter Thiel really doesn’t jive with my understanding of his politics that was mostly incepted into my brain by the media.

There's probably a middle ground to this but I know 2 Romanian men who underperformed in school despite being very smart (both computer scientists). Their entire life changed post taking ADHD medication in UK. I mean not just productivity, but also better mood etc.

Safetyism is the biggest enemy my generation has to battle. The dangers are immense: from depressed teens to stagnant innovation landscape. Courage & risk-taking are the most underrated values of our times.
Safetyism is strangling progress. Chat I had with a brilliant scientist today (postdoc):. “I feel like I’m no longer doing science. My job has become shuffling around ethics and compliance documents. It’s strangling our science. I am depressed. It’s like they’re trying to stop us.

SBF studied Physics not CS & this is misleading. Quant finance is absolutely the top place for Physics/Maths ppl to go if they don’t wanna do academia. Being a programmer in finance is less prestigious indeed bcs ur not at the action center! But SBF was a physicist!.
I went to MIT & studied CS, one year under SBF. When he graduated in 2014, the place where all the top tier engineers went was Palantir. If you couldn't pass that interview, then it was Dropbox/FB etc. And the third-tier was quant/finance, ie Jane Street. SBF was tier-3 bad eng.

Non-Bio ppl sometimes ask me how to get up to speed with Biology. Most recently, @PradyuPrasad. These ppl tend to be CS/Maths oriented. Their most common complaint is: “I find Biology interesting but gave up on learning it because it is so memorisation based.”. Thread:.

People greatly overestimate how much this “social power” translates into any actual power for women. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: being hit on at networking events is off-putting & it’s often harder to get into the networking circles that would actually give you.
"Young women often have a lot of social power, whereas, except for the fortunate few—the born rich, the strikingly handsome, the 6-foot-3—young men have none. Socially speaking, young men are shit"
