Or better yet- let’s put them on a “reward chart” where they get a sticker for every 1/2 hour of decent behavior. Then, if they have enough stickers- you are to reward them w/ something you bought. (Heck, they don’t even give you pencils for the kids…) The good kids get nothing.

My 13 year old finally gave me a list… among the items: a new box of Kleenex (he had a head cold and his had just run out), a puzzle with a picture of dogs, and a bookmark. There were a few other things on it, but nothing over $30. I didn’t make him wait for the tissues.

I have to confess… I teach GED classes at the local community college. My classroom was being renovated and the only dept chair who would share was mortuary science. A college student who graduated from my program dropped by to ask a math question…& was intrigued….

My big brother rescued me when I was 14. He was 19, and he worked 3 jobs to keep a little one bedroom apartment for us. He slept on the couch in the living room while paying the rent, so I could have the bed. Thank God for big brothers!

Have you looked at the girls shorts compared to the boys shorts? One covers the bits and pieces, whatever they may be while the others are what the kids call “coochie cutters”. I would wear boys shorts too.

If you haven’t experienced it, then you really don’t know. He was a baby before he was viable. That’s why I went on bedrest to get him to 32 weeks gestation… my 8 year old son took charge of the house and his other little brother that summer, bc they wanted their baby brother.

My brother was 5 years older than me. When our stupid parents got divorced in the 1980’s, he got a McD’s job that he would walk a little more than 2 miles to. I grew several inches. He used his first paycheck for an Easter dress so I wouldn’t be embarrassed. I miss him so much.

It’s been happening for literally decades. I taught kindergarten in the 1990’s. I had an inclusion kid who had an IQ of room temperature on a cool day. He pulled a braid out of a girl’s hair bc she had a gold toned hair tie he wanted. With 32 kids and no assistant, I wasn’t 1/2

J Crew was aspirational for a young, broke college kid like me at that time. I still have a forest green roll neck wool sweater from 1994 though. There was no spandex or Lycra. It was glorious. Even Gap, Ann Taylor, and Banana Republic were much better made. I was also 98 lbs…

My brother died as my mom had dementia. I laminated his obituary and we grieved every time. Then, I decided not to tell her anymore. I just agreed that he was a jerk who didn’t visit anymore. Cruel! Perhaps. Easier than delivering the worst news ever every time I saw her? Yes!

That’s not how dementia works… at least for the first few years. Mom knew a lot until she’d “sundown”. Some days were better than others, until the bad days greatly outnumbered the good. It’s a slow and very cruel process. They don’t just wake up one day and forget everything.

I remember my first time flying on an airplane back in the early 1980s. My family was dressed as though we were going to Easter Sunday church, complete with me having to wear stockings at 8. Flying was a big deal back then. No one would have ever done anything like this.

I had a similar awakening when I was chosen to teach a program instituted for the 100 most at risk young adults in the city. We paid them to come to GED classes & work part time. A social worker let it slip that we couldn’t make them come/ they just had to sign in for their $$$

By the third one, there’s very little they can do that hasn’t been done. I came to accept a certain level of dust in my house that I would have cleaned immediately before the third came along. Also, it becomes crystal clear that they are their own people…& we just guide them.

Spoken like someone who has never met a gifted person. My eldest son is gifted with math. I made the mistake of offering his help as a sophomore who had aced Honors Algebra 2 for the struggling senior down the street. My kid couldn’t understand that the boy didn’t understand.

It wasn’t only the black community - we did the same in 80’s Pittsburgh. We called them jitneys- and ours was a white guy named Jerry. He and a couple of others had a card table set up at the Giant Eagle and we would get a ride home with the groceries for a couple of bucks. 😉

My official title was Summer Camp Queen by the time I resigned my college job at the YMCA. I made the kids lie to the public bus drivers and say they were 5 so they could ride for free. We went to the museums, the zoo, and the big library all the time for next to nothing.
