The debut of my Substack — and the first thing I've written for public consumption in any format in many years — is out today. It's about the hardest thing I've ever done: leaving baseball.
Get your free COVID tests through USPS, restarting again tomorrow! Please get yours and be careful around vulnerable friends and family this holiday season
A purple-state governor just increased education funding for 400 years on a technicality. Meanwhile Joe Biden is starting a commission to study whether he can take a bathroom break without asking Mitch McConnell
@_FleerUltra
I am sorry this happened to you and to everyone else there. It’s awful and these stingings just keep coming at us. Please register to vote if you haven’t already. Tell your friends too. Your generation is our last hope.
Obama had a federal trifecta with 60 votes in the Senate and promised to codify Roe on Day 1. That feels like a better starting point for people not taking abortion rights seriously than nebulous “younger women”
Imagining a guy from Chicago who talks condescendingly about normal-depth pizza the way people in other cities talk about deep-dish
"I love a good New York Slice" OH YOU MEAN A CREPE???
I wonder if there’s some psychological effect where needlessly broadcasting your immoral behavior lets you feel like the victim from people yelling at you instead of guilty for doing something you know is shitty
I still think about the blatant missed call that knocked the Browns out of the 2021 playoffs.
If this headshot gets called the Browns likely win the game, then they probably beat the Bills to at least get to the Super Bowl, then Baker Mayfield is harder to toss aside, then...
Some personal news: After seven years of living out my lifelong goal of working in baseball with a first-class organization, this is my last week with the Phillies (save for a limited, consulting role).
Walking away from my dream job was the hardest decision I've ever made…
@JRubinBlogger
@sahilkapur
If you think this decision to help someone win a primary was bad, wait until you hear about Hillary Clinton deciding she wanted to run against Donald Trump
@detachment_red
The fact that even in this strange version of the story the husband calls the peach a "special treat" tells you both how much joy it brings him and the fact that he usually does defer the enjoyment to his family
Depending on your insurance, you also may be eligible for up to 8 free antigen tests a month from private retailers! Here's the link I use for CVS as an example, but your preferred drugstore chain should have their own request process too

This passage from
@amandamull
, who has been one of my favorite writers through the pandemic and is emphatically *not* someone who has been cavalier about the necessity of social-distancing, has really stuck with me today:
@ambersarcone
I love your bread, but you're alienating many of your customers by doxxing your neighbor and turning your posts into havens for homophobes. They probably represent more than a parking ticket's worth of business...
This is also your reminder to get your new booster, if you haven't already. Given that it takes two weeks for the vaccine to fully kick in, the sooner you get it, the better-protected you'll be for Christmas!
I am Jewish, so I can chime in here: Last week’s atrocities were horrific, shocking, and senseless — and not remotely of the same magnitude as the Holocaust. It is extremely offensive, and borderline-anti-Semitic, for Biden to say otherwise.
I'm not Jewish so ultimately I don't think I can make this call but Biden saying Hamas' actions are "as consequential as the Holocaust" just feels deeply insulting.
@jacobdotgov
He has this in common with Quatrich, since everything he says in his intro video (including, presumably, the preparation for the video) is already in his Avatar’s memories
The best argument I’ve heard against allowing draft pick trades is that it would make deals between value-obsessed teams so annoying. You won’t be able to trade with the Rays without giving them a 34th-round pick for their 36th-rounder
I wasn't a fan of the new extra-innings format from the beginning, and after seeing it in action for a few years I dislike it even more. It's a jarring change from the rhythm of how runs score. It makes walkoff wins, one of the coolest things in baseball, feel cheap and unearned.
Besides Michael Jordan's "flu game", what was another epic performance from sports history by an athlete who was competing while either sick or injured?
@DTonPirates
He should be more like you, a modest man who doesn't care about being seen and heard! Which is why you're tweeting about someone else's benign personal decision to thousands of people
Also a good time to remember that a no-trade clause is a player’s best tool to avoid a sudden professional relocation they have no input in. If you’re annoyed by someone invoking theirs, ask yourself if you would let your employer move you across the country with no notice
A good reminder this time of year: Players don't always (or maybe even often) put teams on their no-trade list because they don't want to play there. They do it for leverage in case of potential trades, like, say, if you have an option you'd like to be picked up (or not).
The rest of the NFL is going to hate us no matter what we do, so the Chiefs should just troll everyone and induct Carl Cheffers into their Ring of Honor.
People are still analyzing baseball as if front offices consider "analytics info and scouting info" to be separate, diametrically opposed categories in the year of our lord 2023
Both Minaya and Sabean are known for their scouting and talent evaluation abilities. Both executives will now be added to the other voices in the Yankees’ decision room. Important to mix analytics info and scouting info.
It's probably really bad for baseball that spreading rumors about a player's private medical information and tanking his market is just something that's allowed to happen
@NotABigJerk
The best cheesesteak joint in the city (and therefore in the world) recently got mired in a massive tax fraud scheme, and frankly it made sense
...but I'm thrilled to announce that I am joining the data science team at Match at the end of the month!
I'm super excited about this new opportunity, and as a dating app success story myself, I can't wait to help other people find someone to take them out to the ballgame.
For anyone interested in working in baseball, this is a tremendous opportunity.
@SABR
and specifically this conference helped me get to where I am today. You should take advantage of this rare chance to listen and learn without the cost of travel and registration.
Reminder: The
#SABRanalytics
Conference panels and presentations will be livestreamed on YouTube for all baseball fans to watch beginning at 1 p.m. PDT. We encourage anyone not participating or who cannot travel to

This is your annual Christmas Eve reminder that A Visit from St. Nicholas ('Twas the Night Before Christmas) has the exact same cadence as — and thus can be seamlessly recited to the tune of — The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Pour one out today for the MLB front office folks for whom the All-Star Break used to be the best chance they had to take time off in the summer. One side effect of moving the draft from June to July is that many people lost a rare break from the grind of in-season work

Laying down a marker now that Kershaw playing footsie with homophobia should be part of the character-clause conversation when his turn comes for Cooperstown
In a
@latimes
interview today, Clayton Kershaw said he disagreed with Dodgers decision to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence during next month's Pride Night
As a response, he sought to announce the team's relaunch of Christian Faith & Family Day
One thing about analyzing MLB transactions in the modern game that doesn't get enough attention (even as it's been pointed out before) is that teams have to make roster decisions without knowing the full rules they'll be playing under, or even how the ball will fly off the bat.
It’s fair to wish Ohtani would decide sooner, to think the boundaries he’s set for the negotiations are silly, and to feel it’s unfair that one athlete gets to play by a different set of rules as the rest of the league. But these complaints also feel like anti-labor dog whistles!
Legit love posting my favorite Simpsons gags and everyone else posting theirs in response. Consider the quoted tweet a prompt for your favorite Marge moments 👇🏾
Turns out it’s pretty easy to have a spine about not affiliating with B*rstool! Not sure why so many much-bigger entities and organizations have trouble doing this
@burner3479
@Redistrict
That's disappointing to hear, but I'm sure you have consistent views about the respectability of rejecting automatic party loyalty when a candidate doesn't represent your views. Pic unrelated
We did our civic duty, we Voted Blue No Matter Who, and now the people with trifecta control of the federal government are acting like helpless bystanders as the rights they promised to protect are systematically ripped apart. Their only answer is for us to vote for them again?
@HelenGymPHL
Sincere question about what you are saying here: If you have long believed the Union League to be problematic, why have you attended their events multiple times?
Some personal news: My amazing wife
@elisabeth_emery
is going to Physician Assistant school at Johnson & Wales! I am immensely proud of her for taking this step, and she is going to be a phenomenal PA.
You may have noticed that Rhode Island is a long commute from Philadelphia...
@jjhikes
@DKThomp
Sincere question here — let's say you are 100% correct. What comes next?
Are you knocking on doors to educate young voters about civics? Are you assuming that they will come to their senses by November? Or are you content to say "I told you so" when the GOP is back in power?
Meanwhile, it was publicly reported that Wes Johnson, who is generally regarded as a good MLB pitching coach, was making less than $400K before he left for LSU.
What if a smart team decided to start paying premiums for elite coaches and player-development experts?
At the All-Star Break, our Advantage Plan MLB trainees (hitting and pitching) are on pace to beat their 2022
@steamerpro
projections by ~.5 WAR per player
What's that worth if we assume a win is worth $9m in the free agent market?
$4.5m to each of our trainees 💰
