Yep! Likewise chillies are not native to India.
We used black pepper instead. The Portuguese brought it to India and converted our culinary habits.
In fact in Tamil we didn’t even have a word for chilies. We call it “Molagai “ which means you can use it as “molagu” ( pepper).
