I’m an elementary school teacher, and my students are generally about 2 years behind in terms of social and emotional development. 8 year-olds are just starting to learn how to take turns and negotiate sharing supplies, skills that usually develop in kindergarten.

Everyone will be exposed at some point, and most people will acquire some form of immunity, either from vax or fighting off the illness. @politicalmath has a great writeup on this. People will die, possibly at twice the rate that people die of influenza.

@lizzywol For additional context, the Flu kills 4x as many kids under 5 as Covid, while mortality for the 5-18 bracket is the same for the two viruses. We have never had school closures or vaccine mandates for influenza.

We kept the bathtub full so we could flush the toilet. We had an old washing machine that no longer spun but still heated water, which was huge! We would fill it and heat up water once a week so we could bathe, and the grandparents often came over to wash up, also.

@kittypurrzog It’s not more money per pupil, it’s fewer pupils per class that makes the difference. Plus, lack of a union means you can actually fire bad teachers. Also, lack of federal standards for curriculum means you can tailor instruction to your population’s needs

While kids are spared the worst of Covid, they are not immune to the effects of mitigation. My eldest daughter is 9. I've known her two closest friends since they were 2. They were both active, happy, gregarious kids.

There were no trash bags in Commie land. The stench of unpackaged refuse evenly permeated the entire building during warm, breezy summer days. Our kitchen window was directly across from the trash chute opening. Fun times. There were also no vacuums that actually worked.

The difference between a crappy job and exploitation is coercion. An Amazon warehouse or delivery worker in the US has chosen this job freely and rationally. The fact that such a job is the only/best choice for some people can indeed be seen as sad, or even unfair.

We played jump rope or amused ourselves by shooting thin paper cones out of pvc pipes at each other. Some kids got super into their pipe weapons. Other kids got really into their cones, fitting them with nails at the tip. Some kids got really injured.

Balconies were very important. We hung laundry to dry on the balcony. In the winter, it was cold enough to keep perishable food out there. My parents, like most bloc dwellers, pickled vegetables ("muraturi") in huge jars that they kept on the balcony every winter, like this.

Apartment dwellers would periodically roll up their ornate Persian rugs, cart them outside, drape them over the ubiquitous rug-beating bar in front of the block, and beat them with a rug beater. This was often an opportunity for chatting and gossip.
