Many libertarians are for open borders because they understand the value of markets. I stopped being for open borders once I realized political preferences are substantially biological. Once you understand this, you understand that open borders is slow-motion suicide.
I think I understand why libertarians are often open-borders nutjobs. Libertarianism was created within a Martial culture, in which arbitrary authority is maintained by force of arms. Consequently, they imagine like Socrates that death and liberty are the only options.
