Why aren't we better educated on the policy issues that govern the technology we use every day of our lives? Here's my argument from
@tedxboulder
for why you should care as a citizen (and how to get started).
Peter Mayhew was kept under close watch on the Northern California set of “Return of the Jedi” out of the fear that if he wandered off set in his Chewbacca costume he’d be shot by hunters who thought he was Bigfoot
Thinking of pulling a Tom Sawyer and getting Twitter trads to pay for the privilege of doing our invasive plant management this year. It’ll be like spa day!
I feel the need to issue a friendly reminder to my friends on both sides of the political aisle that Kanye is a master of attention and all this is part of it. Lefties: Stop getting outraged about how he's allegedly "redpilled." Righties: No, he isn't really on your team now.
Mini thread: If you spend about 5 minutes on the
@AndrewYang
subreddit (/r/YangForPresidentHQ) you’ll encounter people saying that they’d never been excited for a candidate before and that the current state of affairs had made them literally depressed. It’s really remarkable.
Yang was pushed offstage before in part because of a December polling drought. And then he turns around and gets the four polls he would need to qualify in a single ten-hour period.
I can’t believe I’m saying this but I’m going to be introducing
@AndrewYang
at his Mount Pleasant rally as part of this Iowa bus tour. Haven’t been this excited about
#MATH
since I programmed my TI-84 with Tetris and Snake.
We are kicking off our bus tour in a major way this weekend.
Join us this Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT in Iowa City for a Women's Town Hall after the Women's March. It's going to be good. 👍😀
@friedmandave
My mom grew up in a super trad Catholic family on a farm and the *funny* stories she had involved stuff like a kid going to the hospital because a donkey kicked it in the head
I went to this exact ski resort on two separate days last weekend, including on a powder day, and I did not have to sit in a single minute of traffic because -- as this article does not note, at all -- Amtrak runs a direct train from Denver to the base.
@JDBrooks90
We don’t currently farm our land (used to have sheep) but our neighbors do and it’s all escaped cows (usually getting into our yard) and coyote-chicken bloodbaths
I know it seems bleak right now but when I was a young female journalist I had a male mentor who respected me, did not once get gross or creepy, supported my ambitions, and even warned me about other men in the industry who were rumored to be pervs. Men like that exist, I swear.
Bloomberg campaign has confirmed its Twitter account was NOT hacked. It is actually tweeting pics of the candidate’s face photoshopped onto meatballs, claiming he can stuff 11 batteries into his mouth, and suggesting it might be funny to let a raccoon loose onto the debate stage.
@lorettasueross
Look, making farming look idealized and sexy is difficult enough. Imagine doing it while your mother-in-law is under the same roof as you!
Oh my god someone in east LA is missing a 17-pound black cat named “Jumbotron.”
@darth
can we make sure everyone gets the word to keep an eye out for Jumbotron?
Kyle Kashuv seems like an ass, but Harvard's delusional if it doesn't know it regularly admits dozens of entitled, overprivileged kids who have said way worse things in text messages than he did. They just don't have politicized national profiles.
Anyone else a bit uneasy with the fact that TikTok is apparently now a hotbed of political organizing and we still don’t have clear answers about how much of its data the Chinese government has access to?
I am not watching the CNN broadcast but based on group texts with friends this is what’s going on:
Anderson Cooper: Don’t worry, America, we’re not going to have as much booze as we’ve had in the past, because last year got a little out of control
Andy Cohen: I brought edibles
There are a lot of reasons to like
@AndrewYang
but among them is the fact that other presidential candidates are trying to Corn Pop their way into proving how woke they were as teenagers and Yang is just like “Yeah I was a goth.”
You all are hilarious, thank you for making me laugh; I have loved the side convos about homicidal turkeys, snake-eating cows, and keeping sulfur out of well water. Muting this as I have to get back to work, which mercifully involves no animal poop. Hope you all have a good one.
Sometimes in the afternoons I work from a local bar and there’s a guy who stops by every day just to get a treat for his dog, Cookie Monster. All the bartenders know Cookie Monster. cc
@darth
If you want to know why Yang gets so much support from random cohorts with nothing in common, it’s not UBI. It’s his refusal to play the cheap media game. People are exhausted by it. They want to stop being told to hate their neighbors and that every news development is doom.
Spending a day with a grassroots presidential campaign has been one of the most hilarious, uplifting, and inspiring experiences I’ve had in ages. What a privilege. I am super thankful to the whole
@AndrewYang
squad for letting me tag along.
BREAKING: The social media experts who became podcasting experts who became crypto experts who became epidemiology experts who became NFT experts who became AI experts are now UFO experts
Since Joyce Carol Oates is trending due to a gross foot pic, I will bring up that she was my thesis reviewer, wrote a wildly condescending oh-you-poor-dear review because I committed the cardinal trailer-trash sin of writing YOUNG ADULT FICTION, and then gave it a B+ anyway
I may have taken this social distancing a little too far because I am currently in a one-room cabin in the mountains with my cat, a suitcase full of books, and two cartons of boxed wine
As a lot of people are pointing out that September 1 is and always has been the biggest intra-city moving day in NYC, but also thanks to COVID the Uhaul location can probably only let in two or three customers at once.
I’m at
@IndustriousHQ
at Hudson Yards for an event where
@Zach_Graumann
is going to be speaking about his experience with the
@AndrewYang
campaign, and the fact that I showed up wearing *only one* piece of
#YangGang
merch renders me underdressed
At first we thought lovely Lauren, a super-friendly kitty who had been living outside, was a regular cat.
But upon closer examination we started to wonder. Could it be? Is she really… a cat/raccoon hybrid? What do you think? True, science says no. But our hearts say yes... 1/
LOL at all you delusional people moralizing about how "no one is above the law." Do you know who's above the law? Raccoons. Raccoons are above the law.
@Justin_Hill314
@nycdouche_
Yeah, chronic back pain here. At times I've had to limit my air travel because of it. I don't fault this guy at all as long as he isn't disturbing the flight, which it doesn't appear he is.
And if you’re in media, think about this. Today it’s the
#YangGang
. Tomorrow, it’s more. People are waking up to the fact that they’re being played for clicks.
Andrew Yang is the ad blocker of candidates: he’s how people are telling you that they won’t take your BS anymore.
It's probably within some margin of error and it's still only 1%, but it's pretty bonkers that
@AndrewYangVFA
is outpolling sitting senators, governors, and congresscritters. His "
#YangGang
" followers remind me of the early Ron Paul enthusiasts.
@DylanoA4
@SueM2022
It should make you happy! That adorable beaver is in wild animal rehab which means she was rescued, likely after a serious injury, and a team of humans is working hard to make it possible for her to return to the wild. She’s making sure her dam skills don’t get rusty.
Something I love about
@AndrewYang
is that whenever another candidate drops out, instead of amping up the fact that he's outlasted so many senators and governors in the race, he says something nice about them and that he'll miss them.
I am stunned that Kamala Harris is suspending her campaign. She is one of my favorite people to share time with on the trail. So warm, smart, fiery and a true public servant. She offered my family help and guidance when she didn’t need to. Kamala I will see you soon.
Who needs some positivity? Here’s a two-week-old kitten stuffed into my bra to help it calm down after a fit of meowing. And, yes, that’s a Mothman t-shirt I’m wearing.
Our culture of partisan outrage and constant news anxiety is underwritten by the ad industry, and it’s time to take responsibility. Excited to finally unveil my
@TEDTalks
Residency project.
I can only walk with this on for about 90 seconds before I have to (temporarily) pull it down, gasping for breath. Asthma affects 25 million Americans. If you see someone “doing it wrong” with a mask it might just be one of us trying to get the oxygen in. Please be kind to us 🙏🏻
@neontaster
@voxdotcom
You get the idea that he doesn't really care about the less fortunate, but that he cares about his own ego and how he appears to his woke friends.
@whpatterson
@JeffFlake
@SenSchumer
Trump's tweet that it was a Schumer pet project when Schumer in fact tried to kill it in 2013 is about 300% more misleading.
Something nobody could have guessed last year would be that in December 2019, the highest polling nonwhite candidate for the Democratic nomination for the presidency would be
@AndrewYang
. He was literally the subject of a profile titled “Random Man Runs For President.”
I think what’s most remarkable about Yang as a candidate — and if you follow me, you know I’m a fan — is that he refuses to stand for any of that. Dude gets it. He knows what a clicks-and-eyeballs media industry is doing to us. I’m like, holy shit, a media-literate candidate.
@GoldPieceOfWork
@ATMwithJacy
This was a big one for me. I did a TED talk and took my BF at the time to some receptions and stuff after the talk and event, and people told him, "You must be so proud of her!" and he shrugged and said, "Well, she's ambitious." RED. FLAG.
It made me think about what the political media machine has turned so many of us into and just how lasting the aftereffects on our mental health could be. Clickbait. Obsessive partisanship. Persistent paranoia because there are so many entities that profit from us being scared.
Screengrabbing for when this is inevitably changed by Twitter: The Pope tweeted about new saints and Twitter took it as a New Orleans football reference and the replies are incredible.
The fact that
@AndrewYang
was seen as “random” as opposed to a rising leader emerging from a community of color says so much about how Asian Americans are perceived in media and politics.
I haven't seen the documentary yet, but my hot take on Theranos for a while has been that Elizabeth Holmes was able to get away with what she did for so long because of the fact that she's a woman, not in spite of it.
HELP WANTED: What is the best term to coin for the phenomenon wherein exes use coronavirus as an excuse to hit you up and rekindle things? The majority of unmarried women in their 30s/40s I know have been experiencing this and we need a word for it. Bad puns a plus.
One of the major things that drew me to
@andrewyang
’s candidacy was his backstory. He WASN’T just an achievement-obsessed brown-noser with cloyingly transparent political ambitions. He was a goth in high school! And he quit his fancy job because it sucked. It’s so freaking human.
@yoda
it's fake. the sixes have an identical smudge on them (e.g. one was duplicated from the other) and the reflection directly below the plate doesn't match what's on it.
nevertheless I LOL'd
