This isn't the first time the US government stood on the wrong side of an essential human rights challenge. In my new book, "Righting Wrongs," I explain how the human rights movement repeatedly circumvented and overcame US obstruction. We can do it again.

Yet again Trump threatens severe consequences if Putin keeps up his invasion of Ukraine, but so far that has all been hot air.

Trump's suggestions followed Russian attacks on Ukraine’s power grid overnight, part of an ongoing campaign to cripple Ukrainian energy infrastructure before winter.

A Trump-appointed judge rightly rules that Trump is entitled to no deference when he refuses to act in good faith, such as by concocting a crime wave when none exists to justify deploying troops in Democratic-run cities.

Dishonest presidents should be entitled to no deference at all.

Because people see through the concocted crime wave that Trump invokes to deploy troops in Democratic-run cities, he is toying with claiming an "insurrection" which obviously also exists only in his head.

Trump rightly wana the Gaza war to end, but we've been here before. A lasting peace will require Trump twisting Netanyahu's arm not only to stop fighting (as done for now) but also to accept the only viable route to a lasting peace, a Palestinian state.

Trump declares the war in Gaza over, but the militaristic Netanyahu has other ideas. He won't commit not to resume fighting, let alone to allow the Palestinian state needed for a lasting political solution.
nytimes.com
Except for brief references, President Trump did not talk about what it would take to rebuild Gaza or the future of the Palestinian people.

War crimes never justify war crimes, but war crimes can certainly breed war crimes.
Before Oct 7, 2023, #Israel intelligence assessed ~60% of #Hamas fighters were men who'd lost their fathers/parents in previous wars with #Israel. With ~70,000 dead in #Gaza, ending that cycle of violence will require *huge* change to the decades-long status quo. HUGE.

The Netanyahu government is so fearful that Trump will abandon Netanyahu’s obstructionism that it doesn’t want a Palestinian member of the Knesset to raise the issue of a Palestinian state, even though that’s the only viable route to the lasting peace that Trump says he wants.
They kicked me out of the Knesset just for raising the simplest demand, one that the whole international community agrees on: Recognize the State of Palestine! Recognize the simple truth: There are two peoples here, and no one is going anywhere.

Trump wants Israel to seize this opportunity and build a lasting peace. Yes. What he doesn't say is that the only viable way to do that is to accept a Palestinian state, which Netanyahu has devoted his career to preventing.
