The move of “not being able to recognize your liver recipient because they have transformed into a healthy person” is one of the best things in our field. Hugs and tears every time.
On June 4, 2007 a University of Michigan Transplant Team took to the skies on a Survival Flight mission to save a life. They did not return. May their lives & deeds remembered here reaffirm our commitment to cherish life, to care for the ill & injured & to serve the common good💙
2008- 21 yo student, PSC, needs 3rd liver txp; septic in ICU. Team disagrees on relisting.
Txp surgical faculty met at her bedside. Vigorous debate, I argue to relist.

Not much better than the honor of bringing in Christmas with a liver transplant. Grateful to a generous family having a tragic holiday who gave the greatest gift, and so honored to be part of this team. Happy holidays my friends.

Today we honor the loss of 6 teammates who died on a transplant flight. We are reminded that every life saved through transplant is the result of tremendous sacrifice by our teams and the transformative gift of organ donation.
“This is what your training is meant for, to help others at this critical moment. Our teams support each other and share resources. You were uniquely trained for a moment such as this.”
I haven’t picked up a scalpel in 2 weeks. But I’m working harder than ever. WE CAN DO THIS.
Today we honor the memory of our 6 lost teammates, who died on June 4, 2007 while transporting lungs procured for one of our patients. We were forever changed by this event as was the transplant community internationally. Their legacy lives on in every patient we serve today. 💙
@StephCohenMD
1. Always, always go see the patient.
2. Take every consult as the opportunity to participate in the care of another human. It’s a privilege. Act that way.
3. As a surgeon you are asked help patients in their darkest moments. Own it, be accountable, and always follow through.
I put a piece of my heart on a plane to Greece today.

This is so beautifully written. I have unfortunately experienced that same moment w families and Dr Coleman’s description is accurately and respectfully told. Well done

I started holding my pt’s hand as they go off to sleep before txps & other major cases. I started doing it because I wanted to be at bedside at induction of anesthesia but continued because I’m humbled by how many pts remember it & thank me for it. Touch is the best medicine....

Someone needs to explain to me that psychology behind the fact that I can have the discipline of an Olympic athlete or Trappist monk during daytime hours but at 3 am after a liver transplant I’m like… Rice Krispie treats… reruns on Netflix… game on 😳
No time yet to reflect on all I’ve learned over past weeks, but will share one day. But 2 things must be said & not forgotten:

Inspiring and long awaited day. Lots to celebrate but I can’t help but feel the tremendous urgency to use this opportunity to relentlessly push for equality and justice in all we do.
Let’s get to work.

To be blunt, this is an insulting suggestion. The best surgeons I know are as dedicated to their patients before and after the OR as they are during. In fact, as the FTR literature shows, the best surgeons don’t have fewer complications, but better rescue patients w complications
I’m learning that at least 90% of dysfunction in teams and organizations is directly related to unwillingness by most of us to:
1️⃣have difficult conversations, &
2️⃣take the risk of trying new things.
We need more courage.
This is so painfully accurate. Nurses and doctors work hard to take care of sicker patients, and the system does not seem to care...

He was an incredible gentleman & always led with grace. He was an incredible speaker & so charismatic - people flocked to his side on rounds. But I will always remember most his manner with patients - gentle and honest, and he spoke to them like family. And they loved him.
My hero. Not just because of her talent, integrity, and commitment to service, but because she does all of those things with grace and absolute humility.

There’s much wrong about this letter, but let’s start simple: to assume program committees choose speakers based on merit is laughable. Too often, a small group (usually white men) sits around & thinks of who they know to give talks. Representation matters. This letter is naive.

Last year, John Reid lost his 16-year old son in a car crash. He decided to donate his organs, including his heart.
This month, the recipient sent him a surprise gift - a teddy bear with a recording of his son's heartbeat.

I would say the team should do whatever they usually do. One reasons VIPs often get substandard care is because things are altered from the usual routine. If the fellow and attending usually do such cases, that’s how it should be done.
I talked with

In response to the

Government service was never part of my plans. But every doctor knows that when a patient is coding, your plans don’t matter. You run to the code.
And when a nation is coding—if you are called to serve, you serve.
