It feels very strange knowing that the Sky days are done but a huge thank you to all those with whom I have worked over those 20 years. It was a great team to be part of. Thank you too to all of you out there for so many kind messages.
Many thanks to all who have spotted and welcomed my return to a commentary box for
@thePSLt20
I was in Pakistan 12 months ago and being asked if I would do this if offered so now it’s going to happen I’m hugely looking forward to it all.
Truly sad to be leaving Pakistan after such a warm welcome and having so enjoyed the craic of being back in a commentary box. Hope to come back as and when PSL resumes. A big thank you to everyone who has made this a great trip.
@iramizraja
The problem is that “security issues” are so hard to define. I’m sorry that ECB has felt obliged to pull out but I’m happy to come back for PSL next year if required and support
@TheRealPCB
It’s never good to lose a friend but always good to remember why they were special. Big Bob had so many “moving parts” - not just in his bowling action - that he was a fascinating man to know. He leaves a long, tall gap. RIP
If Rehan is making a debut as the youngest ever England player, can I say I’m ready to make a comeback as the oldest?Been netting at
@TheRealPCB
in Lahore.
Well that was really enjoyable. A month in Abu Dhabi to finish the
@TheHBLPSL
and congrats
@MultanSultans
. Thanks to all who worked hard to make it work. Hope to see you all again. In the meantime once again available for hire!!
It appears one has to explain things to the hard of hearing - I’m not against the IPL - it is a phenomenon - but I am against England contracted players being unavailable to play for England because of it.
"Joe Root finds himself with people unavailable, because where are they? The IPL. What good is that for English Test cricket?!
This is the oldest, more important form of the game, we need to defend it."
Four minutes of David Gower in full flow. Well said, Sir 👏
What a lovely farewell tribute from BBC to the outstanding Sue Barker. Tears and 🥂 all round. She has been and is brilliant. We will all miss her. Were I there I’d curtsy! 👏👏
I must pay tribute to my now late captain. Ray Illingworth was one of the great captains. His job was to “turn me from a gifted amateur into a gifted pro”. Jury still out on that but I will be eternally grateful for his support in my formative days.
LEFT HANDERS UNITE! Here’s some top shelf majestic batting from lord DAVID GOWER, smashing the NZ attack in 1982/83 for one of the best tons in the 80’s, 158 glorious Gabba runs, absolute left hand porn galore. What a player.
In my position as man on sofa watching England, not for the first time I’m thinking that a player of Jason Roy’s prodigious talent must be able to transfer those skills to test cricket. If Warner can, Roy should.
A case well made. The failure of the quid pro quo of
@TheRealPCB
sending their team to England will cost them more than just the “quid” and
@ECB_cricket
have not been “pro” in any sense.
Day 5 Quarantine in Abu Dhabi. Have read 46 pages of PSL Covid Protocol. Waiting for next Covid test before resuming wandering round the suite and watching European crime dramas. Currently into series 2 of Spiral.
Have made it to Cape Town to be warmly greeted by the man at Immigration control. A very good start followed by “Are you working?” I could only say “Sadly not”. However it is great to be here and I look forward to seeing what happens in the next few days.
@StuartBroad8
When a bowler is that far into the action I think it’s entirely reasonable for the batter to assume the delivery will be completed. A less than honourable way to finish what had been an excellent series for India.
Let's keep it simple. Alistair Cook has been an outstanding performer and is a thoroughly good man. I for one hope it is a fitting finale for him at the Oval.
Over 2 months ago now I contributed to a podcast for
@FOXSportsAUS
for an agreed fee and sent them an invoice on the same day. They still haven’t paid. WTF is it with the accounts depts of such major companies that they treat contributors with such disdain?
A merry Covid free Xmas to all. A month ago I had no idea I’d be here in Melbourne but it’s great to be back on familiar turf. Who knows what Santa has brought us all in this little stocking? A test win? 🤔
What a great lady. What a great reign. May Elizabeth II rest in peace after a lifetime of wholly admirable service. As one of many to have met her even briefly the memory remains both fresh and special.
If you’ve no £&@?ing idea what I mean, you need to read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and know only 1 thing. The answer to life, the universe and everything is 42.
With all the bad news circulating how nice it is to have a little something to celebrate. So, happy birthday to
@ivivianrichards
Vivi, many happy returns. You’re still looking awesome!
Thanks to everyone today for all the birthday messages. Today I am apparently a year older. The good news is that tomorrow I’ll only be another day older.
Thank you, thank you to all who have sent birthday greetings. Very nice to be remembered and I will be celebrating unusually, though it is now the norm in lockdown, by shovelling compost. 🥂🥂later!
Very sorry to hear of the passing of Dean Jones. Very talented and very brave as a batsman. Hugely enthusiastic as a broadcaster. A real cricket lover.
@TheBarmyArmy
Fear not, Mr Tapal is a good friend! Sadly the washing machine is a little oversized for my utility room and as for toothpaste - well - life’s too short!
Rest of the World team 1970. B Richards, Barlow, Kanhai, G Pollock, C Lloyd, Sobers, Engineer, Initkhab, Procter, McKenzie, Gibbs. Not worth test status? Give me f@&£&£9 strength!!!
Good luck to all those demonstrating v the Govt & HMRC’s retrospective taxation outside Parliament on the 4th Sept at 10.30am ref:

Sorry I can’t join in. Otherwise engaged on the little matter of the 4th Ashes Test

Just seen the
@timesdiary
piece about the horticulturalist, David Hedges-Gower, who added the “Hedges” because his wife didn’t wish to be married to David Gower. Please send him my commiserations.
I’ve just spotted that it’s International Snow Leopard day. They are in my top 5 and 1 day I will head to the top of a mountain to tick off seeing them in the wild. I know, patience and luck and a good guide all needed!!
Great news. Those nice people at Chapel Down are adding the sparkle into English cricket this summer. I’ve not opened this one yet. It will be even better to celebrate the first England win. And it’s the only one I’ve got!!

Sept: presented Sainsbury’s with an invoice for £200 damage to my car in their car wash with verbal assurances of compensation. Today the Executive Office rings to claim they are not liable. Waitrose it is then and hand car wash from now on!!
@iramizraja
What’s keeping you? Some of us are already pacing our rooms in Abu Dhabi like caged tigers. Well, maybe more like confined tabby cats but you get my meaning! See you in a week after quarantine!!
Asking Australia to bat first at Headingley ‘89, declaring at Lord’s ‘84 and drinking with

for the last 40 years. Many other offences to be taken into consideration.
This is the obscure, tongue-tricky discovery of my day, noted because it really fills a gap:
'cacoethes' [kak-o-ee-thees] is the desperate urge to do something very inadvisable.
So sad to lose Lord Ted. He was a truly great player and such an imaginative thinker about all sport, not just cricket, and made the most of a fascinating and full life. Much more deserving of the soubriquet “Lord” than I!
Just finished The Librarian of Auschwitz. Not exactly a cheery read but incredibly moving and ultimately uplifting when you understand Dita’s life story. And if anyone is feeling hard done by at the moment it’s one more reminder of the worst that can happen.

@GeoffreyBoycott
Damn! I'm 4000 odd runs behind Alastair and have a lower average. Should have tried harder!! Time for a comeback now I know where I went wrong?!!
@TheCricketPod
Speaking in an understandably limited way, I’m here firstly because I’m working and secondly because I like it here. It’s a fascinating part of the world, very welcoming and as you can see full of surprises! Never a dull moment!
@the_topspin
Drat! More Tippex! But in all seriousness HB has been outstandingly brilliant on this tour so whole hearted congratulations. It is very unlikely to be the last record he breaks!
David Gower writes for The Cricketer every month. The first in his new 'lunch with...' series features his old England team-mate and fellow batting great Graham Gooch, in the June issue. It's a top read. Please subscribe:

It is a campaign to reverse a retrospective tax grab by HMRC referred to as the loan charge legislation. Demands go back as far as 20 years and have affected hundreds of thousands. There is a lot of info out there on Twitter.
Does anyone out there have a contact for Chris Old? I’m helping to get together the players involved in the ‘81 Ashes for some celebratory dinners next year, 40 years on. I’ve found everyone else but Chilly is proving elusive!!
We are so pleased to announce that Cricket Legend
@David215Gower
will be joining the Black Opal team as ambassador and Cricket Tour Host. We look forward to working together and announcing David's first event soon. Welcome to the team!!

I have to admit being bamboozled by Waqar that day. I think I played and missed at the five before in that over and had decided a little too early to leave the final one alone. Well bowled, I’d say!!
As President of White Hunters CC, a motley but lovable crew of itinerant cricketers, may I share the attached blog from 1 of the founder members on the topic of the persistent ban on recreational cricket.
Just watched Guy Martin parachute into Normandy. Take my hat (beret?) off to him but even more massively to all those who did it for real 75 years ago. Huge respect. Huge gratitude.

Certainly. I had reached a point where I needed a break. I asked for some time off that winter and Peter May made it clear I could not pick and choose so I had to forgo the entire winter programme, incl SCG test. Never an issue re Pakistan.
Retrospective taxation with apparently no limits is just wrong. Simple. If govt wants to be seen to be moral this is one area that needs to be addressed.
@OnceAshes
Aggers, my dear friend, I’m so sorry. Of all my regrets that summer of ‘89 was/is the biggest and by the end of that dreadful series all I can say is that the word “frazzled” doesn’t cover the half of it! Loved your company in Pakistan. See you soon!
It cannot be right for “authority” to sit on its hands for years and then just be able to turn the clock back at will to make up for its own inefficiency.
@David215Gower
Thank you David for this

First impression from the stand rather than the media centre at Newlands: it is definitively a beautiful location but if only someone could paint out the brewery. It would be possibly the world’s biggest trompe l’oeil but worth it.
@Bibhu224
As most people have now gathered, I have never blamed IPL for England’s test woes. That Harry Brook can make headlines in PSL is great for both parties and the key fact is that it is not in conflict with any England duties. That was and is my point.
@Zohaib1981
@waqyounis99
As I’ve said before it was a very fine piece of bowling; 4or 5 swinging away and the one you’ve so kindly shown holding its line.
Very good of R Ashwin to give me a current topic for tonight’s Pataudi lecture. He (Ashwin!) is a very fine cricketer and one of the game’s great thinkers. When he has thought about this more I hope he will come to the conclusion that his instinct let him down.
💬 "They are acting like 'everyone else that has played in the history of the game are wrong, and we are right'." 💬

not happy after watching England suffer another batting collapse on day three of the second Test against New Zealand.
