📰, here since 2015 after 15 yrs 🗞️ Telegraph - my 📖s - The Toughest Tour & The Cricketer’s Ashes Anthology. ❤️ county/Test 🏏
A triangular Test tournament between England 🏴 Australia 🇦🇺 and India 🇮🇳 might be good. It hasn’t been done since 1912, might be worth another go
Well said Virat Kohli: 'It's lovely. It is the best format for me. We absolutely love Test cricket. People who watch it should love it if they understand the game. There is nothing better than testing yourself over 5 days against top-quality opposition' 👏
Talk of England leaving out Anderson or Broad for the West Indies. Just pick the best bowlers to win the series, until they retire. Stop messing around with Test cricket (big reveal about 4pm)
Mike Atherton has a way of saying something really damning in a really understated way: "The partnership between Root and Bairstow was the only time that England have looked like a Test batting side". Ouch
RIP Diana Rigg. The most authentic Bond relationship, in OHMSS. She helped induce a massively under-rated performance from George Lazenby – as close to the Ian Fleming books as the 007 films got. A terrific actress with memorable turns in Mother Love, Avengers, Doctor Who etc etc
@GNev2
No, you spoke like a triumphalist Man U fan gloating when Liverpool fans are hurting. Yet we have to then watch you pretend to be impartial on Sky and in whichever newspaper you are writing for
Would there be a market for a 50-min ‘Match of the Day’ show of the day’s County Championship highlights on Sky. It would be great to see Dom Sibley, Kashif Ali and Dan Bell-Drummond’s best strokes today… wouldn’t cost much to put together
I’m not saying The Hundred is without merit and we can all see the good it has done women’s cricket, but it damages the CC, 50-over and Blast. What a price to pay
I appreciate the ECB needs to stay on good terms with BCCI. Public have a right to ask, tho, if this is nothing to do with the IPL, why was the Oval Test OK to proceed but not Old Trafford? I have friends who’ve spent a lot of money going to Manchester, will they be reimbursed?
Joe Root calls for the Blast to give way. It makes most of the money for Yorkshire. His county. The county that nurtured him. One of the oldest, greatest cricket clubs in the world (and yes I am aware of their problems in recent years). It is disappointing
"The England squad are hurting, of course. They insist they are still "throwing punches" in this World Cup, to use Matthew Mott's words. But most of the time it's more as if they've been throwing up" |
@GeorgeDobell1
Mike Atherton let down by system in 1994/95. Seamers bowling most of their overs in county cricket, unlike Glenn McGrath. Central contracts came 2000. Joe Root similar. White-ball obsession, appalling CC schedule. Judging by history it’ll take 6 years for ECB to address

Right, it's Bank Holiday Monday, what county cricket is on today to take my son to... let's see, obviously not Lord's, but maybe The Oval, Chelmsford, Canterbury, Hove... Oh. None. Anywhere, in fact
Liam Dawson 840 Championship runs at 40, 49 wickets at 20. Should be preparing for England’s Test series in India. Instead bowling 4-0-34-0 for Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
Shane Warne, oh no. Cruel news. His poor kids, who were so sweet in the film just out. You couldn't take your eyes off him as a player, and he's been so engaging post retirement. With Don Bradman in the bracket of undisputed Australia legends. On top of Rod Marsh, it's too much
@MichaelVaughan
Or maybe it’s been given the prime slot in the heart of the summer/school holidays, with £80-odd thousand spent on marketing each men’s game, full backing of Sky, terrestrial TV, a whopping budget, extra money to players who are hardly going to look a gift horse in the mouth, etc
County Championship match every week in May, June, July, September Sunday-Wednesday + a white-ball match on Friday or Saturday (16 weeks). Instead of The Hundred, have an FA Cup-style T20 involving 32 counties (5 rounds) simulcast on BBC/Sky for fortnight in August (plus a plate)
Middlesex (Strauss's own county): "We strenuously underline our position on being opposed to any reduction in volume of 1st-class cricket played across season & most importantly the Championship... we firmly stand behind our belief this should remain at 14 games over the season"
BBC report: Essex chief executive and interim chair John Stephenson told BBC Essex that as it currently stands, the club would not vote in favour of any reduction in the Championship.
RIP Rod Marsh 😢 They don’t make ’em like him any more. Unflinching cricketer on the field, great keeper and fighting bat, and welcoming host off it. Australia have only had 34 Test keepers, he’s the 2nd= most capped with Gilly (96), behind Healy (119)
Controversial opinion maybe: now England 🏴 are sweating on the Manchester rain ☔️ because they should have batted on at Edgbaston, and not been so reckless at Lord’s (188-1 to 325ao). Over 5 Tests I think their skill and belligerence would have ground tired Australia 🇦🇺 down
Australia fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 in 1936/37. All England need is someone to do what Don Bradman did and score 270, 212 and 169 in the last 3 Tests

What I am concerned about: why Graham Thorpe - one of England’s greatest - appears to be struggling to get his message across to our batsmen… what I am not concerned about: that he smoked a cigar
To have an entire county
@Gloscricket
nicknamed in your honour…. Proctershire! That was quite a thing. Unorthodox, broad-shouldered bowling + hard-hitting, then a distinguished career in administration, and a nice guy - RIP Mike Procter
Michael Holding: ‘That T20 rubbish, destroying the game.’ Ouch. I do think we will see greater segregation between first-class/Test players and 50/T20 going forward. A lot of these players’ techniques simply unable to make a match last 5 days
Invest 💴 in the 18 first-class county clubs, not just 1 format, stop 🍒-picking:
🏏 14 rounds of Championship
🏏 5 x 50-over matches + SFs, final
🏏 14 rounds of T20
🏏 T20 knockout cup involving National Counties
Michael Parkinson a great friend of cricket. Always found it odd he never presented it. That BBC1 Saturday night line-up the stuff of legend...Doctor Who with Tom Baker, the Generation Game, the Two Ronnies, Match of the Day...ending with Parkie. We were spoilt
The deputy head told me not to walk over the grass once when I was 12. His back turned and I did it again, and got a deserved detention. Some of these lads need to grow up a bit
Epic, gripping, fluctuating, emotional, entrancing... so much better than what we have seen the last 2 months. Why do people keep forgetting Test cricket is the ultimate format?
Schedule devised as follows:
1) Hundred gets first dibs
2) Counties given next-best slot for Blast as compensation
3) Championship then slotted in before + after in extremities of season… despite Test cricket still being our most-lucrative format. We’ll miss it when it’s gone
⚡️ OUT NOW! ⚡️
"If you prioritise white-ball cricket at the expense of the first-class game and cram the schedule with so much cricket that players break, England will lose home Test series" |
@GeorgeDobell1
NEW ISSUE ➡️
We are not Luddites, because Test cricket is the greatest, and still makes up most of the TV deal. The Championship is essential for it. Sometimes you have to fight for what you believe in, not just step aside and let the bulldozers roll in
Richard Gould = Rishi Sunak. Both denied top job in the past, now is their chance. Their ideas disregarded before, now they can implement them. Gould’s appointment has been expected for a few weeks. The men’s Hundred’s future in a degree of peril I have heard.
I have never seen a fielder claim a catch like that when he slides it along the ground, ball facing down. Consensus says *out* in the press box. I can’t agree. Bad luck Mitchell Starc. Duckett (grisly) shot survives
David Gower writes for The Cricketer every month. The first in his new 'lunch with...' series features his old England team-mate and fellow batting great Graham Gooch, in the June issue. It's a top read. Please subscribe:

Interview with Tom Harrison in The Times when he tries to put a positive spin on his 7-year reign. Mike Atherton’s verdict on the 💯obviously the most interesting thing on the page
Alastair Cook very fluent this morning. I wonder if he will ever regret not just having this winter off and offering to return next summer. Graham Gooch certainly benefitted from recharging his batteries (1986/87, for instance)
This should take the pressure off Ben Foakes too. His glovework has been great in this match, and now this matchwinning innings in his first home Test. He didn’t do quite enough in the Caribbean to settle the debate
Jonny Bairstow was a brilliant Test batsmen, but in the last 2 years he has scored 685 at 21. Zak Crawley had a nightmare 2021. It was only 3-4 Tests ago that Burns got 61 + 50 v India. We are just going around in circles. County Championship should no longer be in April, May
The Ashes: England batsmen Rory Burns and Ollie Pope are set to be dropped for the Boxing Day Test with Zak Crawley and Jonny Bairstow recalled.
Burns has made six ducks this year, while Pope has scored only 48 runs in the series.

@swildecricket
🏏 in April is pointless, let’s face it. Authorities are hellbent on carrying on with the 💯. That basically means county🏏 has May, June, July = 13 weeks. I don’t know if county comps viable in that time. If we are stuck with the 💯, is it time to look at the ludicrous names?
How come Joe Denly has a white-ball contract when not in the limited-overs squad but has no Test retainer when he appears to have nailed his place down?
Good crowd at the Kia Oval for The Hundred: Oval Invincibles v Trent Rockets, but they’d still be here for a county T20 Division 1 (8-team) clash, with the added factor of relegation, a lifeblood of sport
We are sad to hear that former Kent and England spinner Derek Underwood has passed away at the age of 78.
Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this time.
🏏 The 3rd umpire has instantly restored England’s referral - a brave admission that he was wrong. In ⚽️ football it takes 48 hours for dodgy red cards to be rescinded by the FA panel 👏
The Blast 💥 is about to start. When the Championship should be in full swing. The Blast, meanwhile, or a county T20 of some description (probably two divisions) should be starting in the school holidays.
