Standing for Trans Officer
@LabourStudents
| Labour & Co-op Cllr for Delph & Denshaw 🌹🐝 | They/Them | 21 | Social Policy
@SalfordUni
| Working Class and Proud
Transphobes are not fit to be MPs.
If you can’t stand up for the rights of your vulnerable constituents you have due to online radicalisation, what will you stand up for?
Make no mistake - this is not a women’s rights movement either when people like Posie Parker/KJK 1/2
Im tired of people like Rosie Duffield and JK Rowling saying theyre cancelled in mainstream papers/interviews when I havent seen one trans person receive a fair platform to discuss their experiences + the only space we do have on social media has become so toxic many feel unsafe
I’m logging out of this account for a few days min as the result of a potential threat to my physical safety from a gender critical. This obviously is going to be reported to GMP. I obviously stand by my views 🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️🏳️⚧️
Predictably I’m incredibly disappointed that the NEC has cleared Rosie Duffield for antisemitism and transphobia.
Transphobia is consistently disregarded by the party so whilst I’m sadly unsurprised by the outcome, it once again reinforces the need for an independent complaints
Exactly a year ago today, I had to drop out of sixth form due to my mental health
Now, I'm a month into sixth form (again) and I've got 100% on both my law assessments so far!
Surely being so bigoted you lose a by-election for a labour seat (on a council where Labour had 49 of 57 Cllr’s!) couldn’t be any greater proof that Laura’s “conduct” is “grossly detrimental to the party”
Will the party finally take action against Laura Pascal’s transphobia?
Nonbinary person here who has a cervix
Not only women have them Rosie, and some women don’t have cervix’s for medical reasons
I don’t get how reducing women - or anyone - to their reproductive organs isn’t clearly regressive
Thrilled to have been elected to Saddleworth Parish Council representing Delph Ward, where I spent so much of my childhood with my grandad
As the first trans councillor in Oldham, this is a huge step forward for ensuring that trans people are represented in public life
Incredibly brave of
@PaulJSweeney
to speak out
Sexual assault is something that’s incredibly difficult to come forward about, and the fear of seeing the person who assualted you is even worse. Full solidarity
Libel on the timeline? You’re feeling brave arent you. Hope you enjoy the satisfaction of telling a random stranger who’s been the victim of sexual assault and rape that they’re a “paedophile” for fighting for my own rights and making a joke about a guy being incredibly divorced
4 years ago, I was homeless for the second time, sleeping in a hotel room with my dad, and wondering whether I’d still be homeless come my 17th birthday. (I was)
Now, come May, I’ll be the first transgender Cllr in Greater Manchester (to my knowledge!)
Life comes at you fast!
If anyone is curious what it’s like being a trans person in politics have fun scrolling through the replies to this tweet (which was much more polite than my initial thoughts)
Transphobes are not fit to be MPs.
If you can’t stand up for the rights of your vulnerable constituents you have due to online radicalisation, what will you stand up for?
Make no mistake - this is not a women’s rights movement either when people like Posie Parker/KJK 1/2
Believe abortion rights are “worth setting aside” so long as the rights and legal protections of trans people can be removed
This is not a movement protecting LGB people either - these are recycled narratives used to harm them and they’re again being reused for all LGBT+ people
We can’t allow transphobia to become a factional issue by placing the blame with one wing/faction of the party
Every faction in the party has issues with transphobia to some extent, whether through ignorance or ambivalence and we’ve seen in the past the only way we can
Reminder that claiming trans people weren’t persecuted under Nazi Germany has been literally referred to as “a denial of Nazi crimes” (translated) by Cologne courts
Predictably I’m incredibly disappointed that the NEC has cleared Rosie Duffield for antisemitism and transphobia.
Transphobia is consistently disregarded by the party so whilst I’m sadly unsurprised by the outcome, it once again reinforces the need for an independent complaints
Quick thought - it fills me with disgust that I’ve seen fellow labour cllrs and members liking both of her tweets. Obviously I’ve immediately unfollowed, but you will not erase us and the history books will show the resistance of trans people right now alongside other liberation
I really can’t explain how devastating it is to see an MP sharing an article like this, even if I do have low expectations for them
I’m so tired of being patronised and dismissed because I’m not cis, of being told I’m ruining the Labour Party for speaking out against my erasure
If Rosie Duffield “hand on heart isn’t a transphobe” as Jess Phillips put it, why has she refused to engage with the trans community to understand why her comments are hurtful and exclusionary?
Not all sex workers are women, but the Nordic Model harms them all regardless.
Why is it sex work is one of the few industries where it’s considered okay to completely disregard the opinions of the workers?
We know that the Nordic Model would put an already marginalised group
The fact Labour MPs are still coming out in support of Rosie Duffield after her comments shows exactly why the Leadership should’ve responded in the first place
Trans and nonbinary people are tired of having to explain why it was wrong, we know LOTO can act quick now is the time
Obviously I’m not best pleased about being front and centre of the DM article with a shorter version also in print (though I’ve only seen the Scots DM) especially given half of my words are removed from context regardless of me standing by them.
If Martin Beckford ever decides
Absolutely ecstatic to announce I’ve been elected as LGBT+ Officer of the Open Labour NC!
A huge congratulations to everyone who ran, it was an absolutely incredible slate of candidates!
Of course an even bigger thank you goes to the outgoing Committee whos work with STV can’t
I’m no longer taking abuse on the chin, there might be little faith in it right now, but we have a complaints process and we need to ensure transphobia doesn’t become rooted within the party
Process like so many within the party have spent years campaigning for.
Antisemitism, transphobia and all other forms of bigotry and hatred are a black spot on our party and nobody expressing or endorsing those views are fit to hold the whip or remain a member of our party.
It’s been days since Duffield has made her comments, more than enough time for even a behind the scenes convo to have taken place in order to facilitate an apology
Instead there’s been complete radio silence. It’s telling. If you’re not willing to defend us in opposition how 1/2
I am once again logging back in to ask why the actual fuck Rosie Duffield still has the whip
Usually Id phrase it more politely but honestly it’s past the point of a joke when she’s visibly siding with the tories, even from an electoral perspective (aka Keirs) she should be gone
Actually you know what, forget removing the whip from Rosie, she should’ve been suspended from the party for some of her comments
I’d say if she was an average member, she would’ve been, but with the current disciplinary system, we all know that’s a lie...
Forgot to log back out so quickly, to all the people standing against the transphobia in the replies, QTs here and on elsewhere, as well as what we face off social media - stay strong, look after yourself and keep fighting the good fight ✊
🏳️⚧️Trans rights are human rights🏳️⚧️
The unwillingness of the party to address this hatred - whether that be transphobia and beyond - is an implicit endorsement at minimum, or active participation in institutional discrimination at worst.
We can not allow our party or MPs to legitimise these imported “culture war”
I mean...I really don’t know what to say to this
Transphobia is a big issue in the party and in all honesty it feels like it’s getting worse
I’ve seen numerous trans people leave the party in the past few months, and at one point I nearly did it myself. To see our concerns 1/2
“We are a party of equality, we take it seriously”
Labour MP Wes Streeting wants “to look what we can do better as a party” on the rights of trans people and transphobia
#PoliticsLive
Really great to hear
@NadiaWhittomeMP
explaining the harm that the Nordic Model causes to sex workers in driving the industry underground and how decriminalisation is the most effective way to protect them
#PoliticsofHope
So disappointed to see another MP dragging this shitsaga out another day
Rosie Duffields comment said only women have cervix’s. That’s factually incorrect and erasing experiences like mine
Even before she said anyone criticising her was commies it should’ve been dealt with
I’ve been on a mental health break from twitter, and I’m probably continuing it - but this is completely shameful
The whip should’ve been removed long before now and it’s sickening that a second staffer quitting during a pandemic due to her transphobia won’t be the last straw
So proud of labour societies across the UK coming together to condemn the NEC’s dismissal of Rosie Duffield’s statements ✊
Our unity will always be our strength and whilst Salford doesn’t have its own society, I’m glad to see
@MCRLabStudents
is on this list and I’m grateful
We and 32 other Labour clubs stand against the revisionism of Nazi atrocities.
It is essential that this shocking incident receives an independent disciplinary outcome, not a political decision.
Solidarity with the trans community 🌹🏳️⚧️✊
27 separate tweets reported to GM Police for malicious comms - credible threats to my physical safety and calling me a paedophile (despite the popular belief of some not for misgendering etc)
Disagreeing even unpleasantly is one thing, but threats and serious defamation can
Before some obnoxious GC uses this to try and compliance me, I’m NOT celebrating a Tory win but this is proof that the vast majority do not support the extreme views held by people like Laura and the leadership need to recognise that and change course instead of pandering to them
I’m so disheartened with the party, because at this point, we know full well that nothing is going to be done about this
When an LGBT+ member of staff has had to resign from a LABOUR MP’s office because they’re so uncomfortable with their views you can’t deny there’s a problem
So many replies over the past few days proving that “we can always tell” is absolute nonsense - people so confident about my sex on both sides like it even matters for them to know for some randomer on Twitter
Narratives that spread hatred and division as a distraction technique from the harm that the latest disastrous conservative government is causing on a daily basis and the callousness of its policies and we should look to fight the election on those issues basis whilst seeking to
I’m not going to be dogpiled into backing down or changing my mind by TERFs and transphobes
No matter the abuse that gets thrown at me, it doesn’t change my experiences as a nonbinary person and I’m not going to stop fighting
Root out these views within our own party and movement because we’ve seen these movements before and they‘ve never succeeded before, and they won’t succeed now.
So much love and solidarity to all the comrades who’ve left the party as a result of the rampant transphobia, not just today but always
When I left the party at the end of last year it was a heartbreaking decision and whilst I’ll be candid and say I don’t think we’re in a better
Solidarity with
@malihaeza
for the abuse she’s receiving for this tweet - as well as throughout the election
Both LGBT and BAME people have more than enough reason to distrust the police, + anyone who would rather report and young activist to the party or send them abuse for 1/
Was great to speak with the MEN completely condemning Rishi Sunak’s comments about trans people at
#CPC2023
earlier today.
Every trans person I know, including myself, is just trying to live their lives peacefully - and the most powerful politician in Britain claiming that 1/2
To write a fair article, maybe he will consider mentioning how the young activists in the piece have been “hounded” and threatened
I’ve gone priv as well in case of any further articles from scalping my twitter but in the meantime - I’m just glad they used a good (but old) photo
Glad to announce I’m standing for LGBT+ Officer of
@OpenLabour
alongside some brilliant activists from the NW!
I’m proud to be standing on a platform that strongly opposes Liz Truss’ proposals, stands for education on LGBT+ issues and aims to create an inclusive space for all ✊
As MPs, we open ourselves up to scrutiny and accountability. It’s part of the job. So is robust disagreement (which is a two-way street). The abuse
@RosieDuffield1
has had for some time goes way beyond the realms of what is reasonable.
If you’re a trans student in the party and appreciate what I’m doing please consider nominating me for Trans Officer of Labour Students alongside the
@socialist_yl
team - my membership no. is L1763315
We need someone who will stand against the leaderships acceptance of 1/3
This should go w/o saying but please dont vote TERFs onto the NEC
The leadership has been weak enough as it is I dont want to see the membership turn as well
So no matter their redeemable qualities, no matter how much of an “icon” they are it isnt worth hurting trans folks
My younger sister was hospitalised twice due to the black mould in our living room surrounding the balcony door.
Nothing my mum did kept it away, and it got so significant and so frequent that my mum had to buy spare rolls of wallpaper to because it would peel off every few 1/
The impact of damp & mould on the health and wellbeing of my constituents is devastating. That’s why I'm backing
@PutneyFleur
's important bill to extend
#AwaabsLaw
to privately rented homes. Everyone should be able to live in a
#MouldFreeHome
.
My heart constantly breaks as a member of the party.
My shame at our actions can’t be understated, nor my shame at remaining a member, even if just to fight back against the narratives that have infiltrated our party from the top down
Sorry for probably being really negative on the timeline today but I’m just so angry and disappointed in the party right now and the members I’ve had sending me transphobic tweets calling my gender identity a “delusion” is exactly why
Another member of the shadow cabinet moving to Rosie’s defence without addressing the impact her comments had
Honestly I don’t see the point of keep reiterating my disappointment by now
Segregation on the TL is it
@wesstreeting
?
Don’t get me wrong - some non-binary people like me would prefer separate accom, however forcing trans people into a third category is completely different!
@LGBTLabour
anything to say on the same day as the LGBT+ history month launch
Source 👇
Streeting: "It should not be beyond the realms of possibility to have wards for women, wards for men, and also suitable, safe accommodation for trans people"
He added: "We want to see single-sex spaces because they are safer spaces"
Former NW member here. I resigned from the party in great part due to your transphobia and the leaderships refusal to address it.
I’m really glad to see NWYL representing my interests as a Nonbinary person and huge credit to
@cchloebrooks
as LGBT+ officer for this
Reminder of the time
@LGBTLabour
condemned Ann Henderson's election as chair of the NEC Equalities Subcommittee due to her history of sharing transphobic material
Think about who deserves your vote in the NEC elections
It takes 0 effort to use people’s correct pronouns and can save them a hell of a lot of discomfort
If you’re not sure, ask! If you do get pronouns wrong unintentionally, correct yourself move on and don’t make a big deal out of it because it just makes things a bit awkward
Not being dramatic but being nonbinary in the Labour Party has really fucked with my self esteem and tbh makes me feel worthless at times but it’s whatever
Excited to announce that I’m running to be the trans officer for Labour Students!
I’m looking forward to working with this fantastic candidates to ensure that the Labour Party is a safe and inclusive space for trans people especially when we don’t have the support from the
🎁An early Christmas present 🎁!!
Socialist Future will fight for free education, support our fantastic Labour Clubs, and build our movement for a transformative Labour government 🌹
He’s the leader of the party that fails to address it and effectively bows to transphobia and personally he actively endorses or spouts transphobic policies it periodically so yes I would say Keir is transphobic
If elected, I promise to fight tirelessly to
•Ensure OL is at the front of resistance to the Liz Truss’ harmful proposals
•Establishing a LGBT+ Network to help promote and the views of LGBT+ members
•Create an inclusive education program to inform members on key LGBT+ issues
With all the good luck in the world you’ll disappear back into irrelevance so I don’t have to risk straining my voice at another protest against you
If hell freezes over in the next 3 1/2yrs I look forward to you and the party that was rejected by the electoral commission losing
Cis allies, more than ever we need your support and solidarity
Trans people are scared, this government have made it clear what they think of us and we’re still yet to find out what policy changes could be made around the GRA going forward
This doesn’t meet performative 1/4
This is probably a slightly messy thread, and in all honestly it’s difficult to write but given the discussions around ACAB I thought I’d add one of my experiences
I was sexually assaulted at age 15, in school, by a fellow classmate. Out of fear of seeing him everyday, and as a
I feel so disappointed and hurt by the leaderships failure to condemn Rosie Duffield’s comments and the continued uncritical support of her by a number of MPs
All my hours as an activist on the door, in meetings working at home and more in order to be made to feel discounted and
Rosie D*ffield’s social media is showing that her views on Trans people are incompatible with an open and tolerant left. I’m proud that Open Labour called this out in the past and I’ll continue to do so as LGBT+ Officer in the future
- in rightly noting concern for Rosie Duffield MP’s recent social media conduct. We share those concerns; the behaviour raised by Heather is totally incompatible with the values of Open Labour.
Have asked Josh to log into this account and keep an eye on DM’s/replies as we look through to report tweets. Thank you to people who’ve sent messages seeing if I’m ok, it means a lot!
I’ve seen a tweet or two from cis allies who have taken these comments as the straw that’s broke the camels back in terms of staying in the party
I completely understand it, but it already feels like we’re fighting our corner alone a hell of a lot, we need decent people to stay
Personally very interested to see which of the NEC candidates sign the
@Labour_Trans
pledges
I’m also curious as to how they all think Nonbinary people should be better empowered by any reforms to the GRA, especially around legal recognition
At risk of further harm and yet some people on the left are still happy to stick their fingers in their ears and ignore the workers fighting for greater safety.
I genuinely can’t think of any other job where we’d allow that to happen
With all the good luck in the world you’ll disappear back into irrelevance so I don’t have to risk straining my voice at another protest against you
If hell freezes over in the next 3 1/2yrs I look forward to you and the party that was rejected by the electoral commission losing
As someone who used to be vegan, I’m getting really tired of seeing preachy vegans in the replies of basically unrelated tweets
Some people can’t go vegan. You don’t need to know why and you can’t just assume what will be best for peoples diet
I struggle with an eating disorder
Really delighted to have written this for
@CoopParty
as one of the first Labour and Co-Operative Cllrs elected ahead of the elections this May
Can’t wait to work alongside all my fabulous fellow co-operators locally, and support others across the country
Not bothering to mince my language, I think it’s really fucked up that the party has welcomed back someone who views trans folks as “ideological extremists” and that despite god knows how many complaints we still have sitting MPs that endorse these views
I left the party over RD
Looks like I’m about to face another Twitter pile on. This time it is for simply liking an interesting tweet thread. Oh dear. What a stupid waste of time. I will not be bullied off Twitter by these historical revisionists, or any other cranks or ideological extremists.
Can I just say how much I love this idea?
This is the type of thing we should be doing so much more of as a party, school supplies can really add up, + I remember seeing detentions in school for not having the correct equipment (inc. school branded stuff which is another issue)
We're launching our School Bank today! If you have children in school and are struggling financially, we're providing stationery packs! We have a limited amount of these so it'll be first come first serve, please only take if you need. Call or text: 07474467173 to arrange one✏️
Can we start by making the party safer then?
We don’t need to be in government for that and there’s a number of members still in the party I’ve complained about who amongst other things have called me an extremist for saying that not only women have cervices and I imagine most
"We need to make the UK safer for trans people"
Exclusive: The Labour Party wants the UK government to urgently introduce law changes that would give tougher penalties for anti-LGBTQ hate crimes…
Was there even any form of credible investigation into the complain with such a quick turnover?
If so much evidence supporting the complaint was be uncovered so quickly - inc. comparing a trans woman in makeup to blackface, and supporting Tory policy with the recent schools
I mean it was mostly the fact she’s a raging transphobe but go off (that being said some of her other takes make me straight up question why she’s in the party anyway)
Labour withdraws Clarke's appointment after the left identified past comments about Corbyn, Iraq, a third party etc
It's going to be tough to find someone literate but nonpartisan enough to review Labour's culture
Deleting their Twitter might be wise next time
