i am running for NUS president in this years election!
pls give my new account a follow and if you’re a delegate at NUS conference this year pls feel free to give me a message
another year another election!
i am running to be the next NUS president to continue building a radical national union!
my manifesto is in my bio and there will be more to come so pls give this account a follow x
amazing numbers from the
@ucu
ballots which show how many uni staff members are just so sick of the poor treatment experienced in the workplace
i know a lot of SUs and sabbs will be discussing whether to support the strikes but here is why i think its imperative to do so 🧵
begging unis spend less time providing budgeting and money saving advice and actually commit to making life cheaper for students. cut your rents!!! increase your bursaries!!! abolish extra course costs!!! job security and better pay for phd students!!! need i go on?
unfortunately the format did not allow for me to respond to willetts' mansplaining of tuition fees to me (especially as someone who actually paid the full £9k in tuition fees that HE put in place)
luckily
@DrJoGrady
was there to put him in his place
jesus. so
@OfficialUoM
would rather send bailiffs to brutally man handle students instead of negotiate on VERY important issues??? absolutely sickening, no uni should act in this way
🚨🚨 BREAKING: UoM have just used dozens of private baliffs to physically evict student protesters. Shame on
@OfficialUoM
that they would rather do this than consider basic demands for affordable rent. Any pretence that these scum care about student welfare is clearly bullshit.
📣OPEN LETTER TO GET UCEA TO END THE MARKING AND ASSESSMENTS BOYCOTT📣
Today
@nusuk
launched an open letter for student officers across the UK to sign, calling on UCEA to
#SettleTheDispute
with
@ucu
and put a proper and fair offer on the table.

students present experiences are OUR future
politicians absolutely cannot continue on this trajectory of denying the existential crisis HE is in and the mass effect it is already having on the country
publicly funded, demarketised and democratised education is needed NOW
very concerning that we are putting in measures to allow for more students to work more hours in part time jobs instead of actually making the cost of living for students significantly cheaper
‼️YOUR CURRENT VPHE WITH THE VPHE ELECT‼️
So happy to announce that I was elected as NUS' new VPHE this afternoon!! Thank you so much for all those who elected and campaigned for me, genuinely could not do it without yous ❤️
the courses i’ve seen being flung around as ‘mickey mouse’ courses include sociology, musical theatre, film studies etc.
guess what gender tends to take up these courses…
landlords, universities and politicians expect students just to accept poor quality housing bc thats just the 'student life'
with students becoming ill living in damp and cold housing, this should NOT just be accepted.
🚨 59% of students have felt uncomfortably cold in their current accommodation!
Poor housing should not be a ‘rite of passage’ that anyone has to go through.
#HomesFitForStudy
@sosukcharity
Whilst this is a day for celebration for students, we urgently need to recognise the dire situation that those who chose to go to Uni will enter into in September
Students at
@LivUni
deserve to have a normal University experience this year after a tumultuous 18 months.
Unfortunately, the University is willing to sacrifice the second week of in person teaching this academic year, all because they won't withdraw just TWO redundancies 1/4
unfortunately a labour mp does not even understand picket lines but incase you're in doubt:
a ucu picket line is at any of the institutions building's that members are striking against during the period of strike action. it is not limited to only those with physical picketers
Really excited to announce that I am standing for NUS Vice President for Higher Education this year!!
I want to continue organising students in the fight for free and accessible education, but on a national scale ✊
Manifesto will be posted very soon so keep an eye out 👀
UoL plan to allow some students to graduate without full transcripts and for those who do get marks, they may be rushed and not be accurately marked
@LivUni
needs to withdraw the HLS redundancies in order to ensure students' hard work to be recognised
Reinstating the 86 nightbuses will help ensure people have a more safe, accessible and affordable means to get home from work, nights out or the library
Please sign this petition to help push for the reintroduction 👇👇👇👇
universities are attempting to limit disruption the MAB is causing to students with mitigation policies, however the only way to TRULY do this is for employers to support
@ucu
demands and to end the MAB
get ur SU officers to sign this letter to ucea NOW
Was great to see so many people out (even in the rain!) showing support in the fight against the marketisation of education!! Thank you to everyone who turned up and also to our amazing speakers ❤️✊
Over just the last 7 days, UoL students have blocked anti-abortionists' harmful imagery, won a preferendum in support of strikes, and been on the picket lines from the early hours of the morning ✊
Never been so proud to be a
@LiverpoolGuild
student officer ♥️
Yesterday, our union announced 18 days of strike action to hit UK universities
This is a damning indictment of the way university vice chancellors treat their staff
RT this 🧵

my brief piece in the times about why it is vital that tuition fees are scrapped.
HE is in crisis. students are working multiple part time jobs to just get by. the rental crisis is leaving students homeless as we speak. the only solution is to demarketise
Was fantastic to speak at the
@NWStudentStrike
fundraiser yesterday to raise money for the
@ucu
strike fund! Always amazing to see so many students united in solidarity with staff ✊
stop skirting around the issue.
if u TRULY want to increase accessibility to education, you will listen to students, staff and the HE sector. a new radical funding model is needed
pledge to end marketisation in HE and then we will actually take u seriously on this
I remember how excited I was to move to Leeds to study.
It was a financial stretch then - if I were a student today, I simply wouldn’t be able to go.
My Labour government will rewire the economy so it rewards hard work and allows aspirations to flourish.
Students will be out once again in support of
@ULivUCU2
staff in the next round of strikes ✊
@LivUni
we call on you to accept the
@ucu
proposals made to improve working conditions and prevent further disruption got students
BREAKING: 68 universities will face up to 10 days of UK wide strikes starting in February
There is still time to prevent disruption, but employers need to drop their pension cuts & take long-overdue action on pay & conditions
#OneOfUsAllOfUs
disruption is happening for students after years of destructive commodification of universities and staff’s pay and conditions being eroded consistently.
you don’t care about students just be honest on that one gillian
University students are being let down by relentless strikes
We want to end this disruption and the resulting impact on their education
So today, I’m announcing that we will consult to introduce minimum service levels in universities so students get the teaching they deserve
The gov and Unis need to do more than say ‘well done’ to their new students. They need to reach into their pockets and massively increase financial support for students, so they can actually attend and be able to afford rent and food AT A MINIMUM
we can talk about debt all day long and the fact that £80 a month in a cost of living crisis is actually a lot lol BUT willetts continued to ignore the fact that by unis being run as businesses and students as consumers disproportionately disadvantages working class students
The Liverpool Guild have announced that a preferendum will be held from 29th to 30th November to decide whether the Guild should support
@ULivUCU2
strike proposed for 1st-3rd Dec
Pls message me if you are interested in joining the campaign for the Guild to support the strikes!!
There will be an option in the preferendum for 'support the ucu but not their industrial action' which is vague and too nuanced.
If you don't like the disruption, the only way to mitigate it is to FULLY support the strike. Longer the picket line the shorter the strike.
⚡️LIVERPOOL STUDENTS, LETS GO ON STRIKE⚡️
On Wednesday 2nd March, along with
@nusuk
, we are calling students to go on STRIKE from their ordinary university teaching!! 🧵
⚡VOTING OPENS TOMORROW⚡
If you are a NUS delegate, make sure to check your emails tomorrow and put Chloe as your first preference for NUS Vice President for Higher Education ‼️✊
4) PHD students are workers as well as students
Student unions aim to represent ALL their members, including PHD students who face a lot of the brunt around precarious and low paid work. More and more these students are expected to support the pressures which come as a result
We sent this letter to our VC, Janet Beer, asking her to support the
@ucu
's demands in consultations.
@LivUni
have a chance to work towards ending this disruption by providing better working conditions and promoting securer pensions
From Monday
@ULivUCU2
will be taking strike action over pension cuts,pay & working conditions
In Semester One we held a
preferendum for you to have
your say on whether we
should support the Industrial
Action. With 2184 points you
voted for Yes The Guild should
adopt the proposal
NEW: We’re delighted that Labour Students has passed our motion in support of free education ✅🎉
Labour Students is now commited to:
☑️ the abolition of tuition fees
☑️ universal living-wage maintenance grants
☑️ ending the failed free market experiment in higher education
despite the dire circumstances, it was such a feel good morning today out supporting the strikers, including
@ucu
on the picket lines today!! there is power in a union and there is power in a collective, no one is alone in any of these fights ✊
1) Staff's working conditions are our learning conditions
When lectures are overworked and unpaid, the quality of our education reduces significantly. We lose the important 1 to 1 connections built with academic staff members that can really help with our educational development
2) Solidarity is key
Staff and students alike are facing the dire consequences of the marketised HE system. Whilst uni managements try to divide is, it is so important for us to stand united against the poor treatment we all experience from universities
TW// rape, sexual assault
I'd recommend students to not follow livconfessions on insta as they have continuously shared content which encourages rape culture at uni and has a lack of understanding of consent and sexual assault
genuinely rape culture at university is a massive problem, when students behind pages like this think this is “funny.” It’s so prevalent at university yet unis would prefer to ignore that this violent culture exists than address the problem.
🎉WE WON!!!!!!🎉
The students voted to support
@ULivUCU2
in their industrial action showing clearly that we won't be letting UoL mistreat staff ✊
Big thank you to everyone who campaigned in the freezing cold, youre legends ❤️
📢GUILD PREFERENDUM VOTE OPENS ON MONDAY📢
I will be campaigning for the Guild to support the strikes as we need to show the University that none of us will be walked over by them ✊
3) Longer the picket line, shorter the strike
Many sabbs struggle balancing the understanding of the disruption on students that strikes cause with the need to support staff members. However, the ONLY way to mitigate this disruption is for unis and UUK to agree to the demands
this is shameful. disruption to students' learning will now have to continue since VCs have decided to reject the reasonable proposals from ucu. this clearly shows how VCs work to protect their own egos instead of their staff and students
@USSEmployers
has today formally advised university employers have overwhelmingly rejected
@ucu
proposals to conclude the 2020
#USS
#pension
scheme valuation.
Our PGR students on why it is neccessary for the Guild to support the strikes. We have a responsibility to represent ALL students, including PGR students
The cost of living crisis has already badly impacted students with 11% reporting to have used food banks(!!) and when the autumn comes, its only going to get worse
Hear from a
@LivUni
student on why they are opposing the shameful redundancies being threatened and why they are supporting the
@ULivUCU2
in their strike action
⚡️MANIFESTO⚡️
These are all policies that I've been so passionate about at Liverpool and I am so keen to take them to a national level to make education more accessible!!
There is a number of issues with this Bill, but one that is often ignored is the impact on our already heavily policed and securitised campuses. Unis will not hesitate to encourage heavy handed clamp downs on student protests in order to avoid fines
The intolerant woke bullies have had their brief period in the sun, but it is now over.
Under our Bill, universities and student unions will face fines for supporting cancel culture.
⚡ENDORSEMENT⚡
Super happy to be endorsed by our current NUS President
@Larissa_Ken
✊ She has done so much amazing work over the last two years and I am keen to keep up her fight for free and accessible education‼️
Unis want us to be divided and they WILL try to divide us, but we have to stand strong against this and fight for an equal demarketised system of education which prioritises student and staff over profits
Uni staff members have a passion to share knowledge and develop our understanding of important issues in the world. If they are under huge amount of stress and time pressures, they are not able to do this to the best of their ability - directly affecting our experience at uni
Solidarity with
@ULivUCU2
✊ its important to support your lecturers during this action in order to tell
@LivUni
to start putting student and staff welfare at the forefront of their decisions
Announcing 3 weeks of strike action at
@LivUni
throughout May & June, UCU's Martyn Moss said 'The university has 2 weeks to stop its senseless attack on jobs and withdraw these proposals.'

members on strike today and for the rest of this week ✊
The students have been shown to have your back and we'll be out there everytime on the picket lines with you
oh now suddenly free speech on campus is not allowed on campus in regards to Prevent?? its almost as if its not about free speech its about only a free type of speech 🤔
anyway, abolish prevent
Solidarity
@RMTunion
✊ Please try to get down to your local picket line either today, Thursday or Saturday in order to show support for rail workers fighting for better working conditions!!
of exponential student intake growth (a key result of marketisation). Due to the nature of their position in the uni and the need for working experience, unis often exploit these students by putting long working hours onto them and paying low wages.
Their fight is all of our fight and as a collective we can fight for a better world.
Moreover, with unity in pressuring these demands, we face more chance of being able to push the uni in the directions that WE want, not how the VCs want
🌹NUS RALLY @ LABOUR CONFERENCE🌹
if you are at labour conference or TWT this year, pls come along to our rally to hear from students,
@YoungLabourUK
and
@LabourStudents
members on what young people REALLY need from a labour government 1/
The devestation and anxiety this is causing students is completely not on. Students deserve to be enjoying their summer after such a difficult year, not worrying about when they will ever get their marks
University management are currently 'this is fine'-ing it through the catastrophe they've created 🐶☕🔥 One has even gone on holiday😡
Students - let them know it's not fine by contacting the Guild on guildadvice
@liverpool
.ac.uk and they will walk you through making a complaint
With students (and student unions) and staff united together, pushing unis and UUK to agree to the demands of the workers, we are more likely to be successful, thus ending disruption
Today is my last official day as Deputy President of
@liverpoolguild
!! 😢😢😢
Im so proud of the work that I've done over the last few years from rent rebates to sexual misconduct disciplinary reform, however there are so many people who I couldn't have done this without ❤️
I am officially standing for re-election to the
@LiverpoolGuild
student officer team!!
I am standing on the following pledges:
1) Tackle rape, sexual assault and harrassment
2) Fight nationally against tuition fees
3) Reduce the cost of student rent
4) Drug purity testing
There are many more reasons to support the strikes but the key theme is that students and staff both face the same poor conditions in Universities, and we need to stand united in this fight.
the media will try to bring down union power and support by constantly saying students don’t back the strike
but when SUs do polls or referendums, it consistently shows majority support for striking staff ✊
they are afraid of our power united, don’t let them break that!!!
Liverpool Hope Students’ Union (
@LiverpoolHopeSU
) surveyed their members about our strike action.
The result? 73% of students back the strikes. Inspiring ✊
#ucuRISING
i was at

day 2 of

strikes ✊
back in liverpool with

@ULivUCU2
where on the pickets as a student i learnt so much from staff out on strike standing against really poor working conditions and really taught me the importance of unionism and solidarity!!
Looking forward to speaking at this tomorrow! Come show ur support for healthcare workers out on strike ✊
Students are the future of our healthcare system, yet the future is looking bleak with low pay, long hours and poor working conditions - change is needed ASAP
belated but MASSIVE congrats to all
@ucu
members who fought so hard for this. my first time experiencing a picket line was during this dispute and i watched so many of my favourite lecturers stand out in rain, snow, HAIL day in day out to fight this ✊
This has been a long, hard fight. But we will not allow a single brilliant colleague to be unjustly sacked based on dodgy, anti-intellectual nonsense. We will
#FightForHealthJobs
to the very end.
@LivUni
need to do the right thing this morning and withdraw the last 6 redundancies
students!!! get down to ur nearest
@ucu
picket line tomorrow and post a photo of urself showing solidarity with staff !!!
UCU are making huge gains in their dispute, and it will only continue if we support staff's refusal to back down without their demands being met
On thursday, let’s show university bosses that we are NOT listening to their divisive rhetoric and that students will come out and support striking staff ✊
The power of the student movement along with the trade union movement is unbeatable - let’s show how powerful we can be 💥
this is something for the student movement as well, we NEED to advocate more than just food pantries and ‘advice’. unis and the gov have the money to support students during this time they just dont want to. we need to fight for radical and long term change during this crisis
It seems the meaning of the word ‘armistice’ has been lost. Armistice day is about remembering those who lost their lives in the world wars but also a reminder of the devastation war causes and that peace prevails.

we all know that the HE system as it exists is consistently failing students and is inaccessible to a whole host of people. this is all down to the marketisation of HE and the only way to work towards an accessible system is to abolish tuition fees
A failure to oppose tuition fees is neither progressive nor popular.
DULC joins 21 Labour Clubs and a majority of the Labour Students Committee in calling on the Shadow Cabinet to commit to tuition fee abolition and the end of marketisation in education.
As always, I offer my continued solidarity with
@ULivUCU2
and call upon
@LivUni
to save the two jobs still being threatened in order to ensure students don't miss out on anymore teaching 4/4

disappointed not surprised.
any pledges that starmer further makes on HE will become defunct. not only bc of lost trust but also bc the current system cannot be made 'fairer' or 'better'. the current system works to make profit out of students and needs complete upheaval

need to stop these redundancies being made, which are based on unfair metrics, making staff unemployed in a pandemic and will have huge detriment on students and future academics

also btw this house’s ‘luxury amenities’ are, having bills included and a flexible terms, a weekly cleaner and ‘hotel style amenities’ (what does that even mean - a tiny kettle and tiny shower gels????)
fight for better conditions.
A MAB is in no way ideal for students and UCU members have definitely not taken this action lightly. The only way for this disruption to end is for UCEA to come back to the negotiation table with UCU and put forward an offer that represents the 3/
just an fyi for the americans that seem to have gotten hold of this and other people who have taken it out of context - i was talking in the context of the new government proposals to judge the value of degrees based on graduate outcomes and salary you receive after
Moreover, it also gives legitimacy to further redundancies using dodgy metrics, resulting in there being less staff to teach and supervise whilst student numbers will continue to increase.
Staffing pressures will further reduce the quality of education at the University 3/4
