Today is 20 years since
@UKLabour
repealed Section 28 in England and Wales.
Our patron,
@angelaeagle
, reflects on the progress made in the fight for LGBT+ rights, and the long journey still ahead.
It is with great sadness that we have decided to put out this Statement on Rosie Duffield.
Solidarity, always, with our trans members, and the trans community.
We are sending solidarity to the members of Rosie Duffield’s staff who have resigned over transphobia. It takes incredible bravery to take this step, and it is wrong that they have been put in a position where it is necessary. We offer them our solidarity and our support.
We’ve been made aware that Rosie Duffield MP has once again endorsed homophobic & transphobic content online. We will be raising this with the party today.
We continue to urge them to take strong & decisive action against anyone who seeks to discriminate against LGBT+ people.
Our full statement in light of comments today from a Shadow Cabinet Member that attempt to justify Keir Starmer's visit to Jesus House.
The video should be deleted and a public apology made by the Leader himself. We also expect him to attend our meeting with his team this week.
We are calling for the whip to be removed from Rosie Duffield MP and have a submitted a formal complaint to the party about her conduct.
@UKLabour
must show zero tolerance towards homophobia and transphobia, including from its own MPs.

Today we marched at
#PrideInLondon
with
@Keir_Starmer
- the first Labour leader to ever march with us, alongside
@SadiqKhan
,
@AngelaRayner
, our members, supporters, activists, and parliamentarians.
History was made today.
Happy Pride everyone!
Inclusive relationship and sex education just passed by 538 to 21.
Making us one step closer to an open and tolerant education system and society that celebrates LGBT identities!
Today is
#InternationalLesbianDay
- an identity that still struggles for acceptance. One that is policed like no other both inside and outside of the community - an identity still erased.
We are proud to fight for the rights of our lesbian sisters today and every day 💪
Munroe Bergdorf couldn’t have outlined our thoughts any better. We wanted to share with you what she’s written.
The attack on Mermaids is as unsubstantive as the attack on Stonewall. We stand in solidarity with
@Mermaids_Gender
.
Things we are not fussed about:
- Whether anyone does/doesn’t want to define as ‘Queer’. There is no universal view on reclaiming the word. It’s your choice as an LGBT+ person.
Things we are fussed about:
- People calling the trans community ‘cosplayers’.
- MPs endorsing it.
Solidarity with
@stonewalluk
today and everyday.
The attacks they are facing are not random. They are not happening by chance.
They are co-ordinated by those who seek to play with fire, by those who mean us harm, and by those who know better.
Don’t let them win.
We're pleased to see these clear, unequivocal and reassuring words from
@TaiwoOwatemi
about the LGB Alliance, and the ongoing issue at the University of Sussex.
Our thoughts go out to Brianna Ghey’s family and all those who loved her, following the devastating news of her death. She was 16 years old.
If you have any information regarding her death we urge you to contact the police.
May she rest in peace.
Marching at
#PrideInLondon
today as the Party that gave you civil partnerships and the equality act, the Party that scrapped section 28.
We are the Party of equality.

Thank you to all our members and speakers at our campaign launch 🧵{THREAD}
Congratulations to our patron
@angelaeagle
on becoming a Dame!
Angela is the 2nd openly lesbian MP and was the 1st openly lesbian government minister.
A fierce proponent of LGBT+ rights since she was first elected to parliament in 1992, she throughly deserves the recognition.
Labour must be the party of equality, and that includes dignity and respect for trans people. It is disappointing to see bad faith transphobic tropes put to use by a Labour MP today. We will be talking to Party leadership about this as soon as possible.
We have spoken with the Leader of the Oppositions’s team regarding his visit to a church on Good Friday that does not align with our values on conversion therapy or LGBT+ equality.
Today Labour's Shadow Foreign Secretary
@EmilyThornberry
joined us at the protest against anti-LGBT laws in Brunei.
📢 Listen to what she had to say to the Sultan here
Thank you to
@Keir_Starmer
for speaking at out LGBT+ History event tonight, including committing to making progress on Gender Recognition if we get into government. Keir was right, we have made so much progress, but there is still so much more to do
Liz Truss just spoke at the dispatch box of how she wants to make sure the UK remains a global leader in advancing LGBT+ rights. A good way to do this would be to deliver on the government's promise to deliver GRA reform, not abandon it and make things worse for trans people.
Disgraceful that anti-trans protestors were allowed to lead
#prideinlondon
today.
@prideinlondon
need to apologise immediately for allowing this to happen. These people should never be allowed to march at pride again. LGBT Labour stand shoulder to shoulder with our trans members.
We agree with
@AngelaRayner
🏳️⚧️
The Equality Act has been on the statute books for 12 years and is clear about the protections trans people have.
Reforming the Gender Recognition Act is also Labour policy, and we look forward to it being reformed under the next Labour Govt.
"Transgender women's rights are women's rights."
Angela Rayner's passionate response as this trans caller asks if a Labour Government would "fix" transphobia in the UK.
@AngelaRayner
Today the LGBT Labour National Committee voted to accept in full and unamended the IHRA definition of antisemitism.
We call on the Labour Party to do the same.
The LGBT+ groups of seven political parties represented in Westminster have come together to say very clearly, with one voice: A rollback on trans rights risks repeating the pain of Section 28, and we will not allow that to happen.
Amazing to hear from
@AngelaRayner
tonight on how the Labour party will always stand shoulder to should with the LGBT+ community
“be loud, be proud be LGBT and be Labour”
A massive congratulations to our Patron
@BenPBradshaw
on the news of his Knighthood this evening.
Sir Ben has been a pioneer for LGBTQ+ rights and is a tireless advocate for Exeter. This recognition is truly well deserved!
70,000 people responded to the govt consultation saying that they wanted progressive reform to the Gender Recognition Act. Today’s Sunday Times article suggests the Tories may not deliver that reform. Help us make our voices even louder. Sign our petition:
Today the Government has failed LGBT+ people in the UK by going back on its promise to reform the Gender Recognition Act in a way that ensures the human rights of trans and non-binary people.

Happy
#InternationalWomensDay
!
We are sending love to all the lesbians, bisexual & trans women celebrating.
Today at LGBT+ Labour we’re taking the time to celebrate our brilliant female patrons who help us fight for the rights of LGBT+ people everyday!
1989 - Alongside Sir Ian McKellen and Lisa Power MBE, future Labour politician Lord Cashman CBE co-founds
@stonewalluk
in response to the introduction of Section 28 by the Thatcher govt.
Stonewall turns 30 this year and is now the largest LGBT rights organisation in Europe.
Our position on this has not changed. The Labour Party must be a safe place for all LGBTQ+ people especially our trans siblings 🏳️⚧️
The Labour Party must adopt a transphobia definition and a zero tolerance policy on transphobia
Labour Students stands in full solidarity with the LGBT+ community.
Rosie Duffield must have the Labour whip removed.
A statement from the National Labour Students Committee:
Our patron
@lloyd_rm
is giving an incredibly brave speech in the House of Commons right now about his HIV status as part of the HIV and
#WorldAIDSDay
debate.
"To those scared of finding out their status - I say to you, it is better to live in knowledge than to die in fear"
IMPORTANT UPDATE: We’re pleased to announce that after much campaigning and lobbying, the Labour Party NEC have confirmed in their report to
#Lab21
that they will introduce a code of conduct relating to transphobia.
The Tories plans revealed in the Sunday Times to do away with progressive reform of the Gender Recognition Act and to further police the lives of trans people are a direct and calculated attack on the trans community.
Our thoughts are with HM The Queen’s family.
During her reign, Britain changed in many ways and saw great progress for LGBTQ+ rights.
May HM The Queen rest in peace.

Today marks 21 years since the bombing of the Admiral Duncan Pub in Soho by a far right terrorist.
We can't be in Soho today for a vigil, but this year as every year we remember the 79 who were injured & the three people who were killed: Andrea Dykes, John Light, & Nick Moore.
There’s lots of misinformation flying around about us today.
To be clear, there are only 2 requirements to joining LGBT+ Labour.
You must:
- Define as LGBT+
- Be eligible for
@uklabour
membership
That’s it. Don’t let those who seek to divide our community tell you otherwise.
Solidarity with
@kimleadbeater
.
George Galloway and his poisonous politics have no place in Batley and Spen, or anywhere else in the UK.
We’re looking forward to campaigning with her on Sunday.
Today marks the beginning of the month where we come together to remember our history, celebrate the brave people who came before us and look towards a brighter future for LGBT people across the world.
Happy

to our wonderful community 🏳🌈

We're asking each of the Labour Leader and Deputy Leader candidates to sign up to our 10 pledges that we believe are vital to protecting and extending the rights of LGBT+ people in the Labour party and in wider society.
This is what we're asking for 👇
Under no circumstances should someone who is cis and straight be speaking over LGBT+ voices when it comes to our community. This is absolutely disgusting and cannot be allowed to go unchallenged.
We are supporting Rohit in submitting a complaint and raising this with the Party.
Today our members voted unanimously to condemn, unreservedly and unequivocally, Roger Godsiff MP actions and calls for the Labour whip to be removed.
No Labour MP should be pandering to the bigotry we have seen outside the school gates in Birmingham.
Rosie Duffield’s negative conduct towards the trans community has intensified over the past few months.
We expect the Labour Party to take clear and decisive action, demonstrating there is no tolerance for bigotry towards the LGBT+ community.
We welcome the suspension of Lord Moonie, following the complaint we made about his anti-LGBT behaviour - the transphobic, homophobic and biphobic content he had regularly posted online has no place within the Labour Party.
Read our full statement below 👇
Last night we had a positive meeting with
@Keir_Starmer
who repeated his apology to the LGBT+ community.
He committed to work with us & the LGBT+ community to bring forward new
@UKLabour
policies to address LGBT+ priorities & advance equality, including to
#BanConversionTherapy
.
This morning we have written to Labour MPs concerning the debate on education taking place in the House today.
We have urged them to stand with the LGBT community and support inclusive sex and relationships education.
We cannot allow the clock to be turned back on our rights.
"In an extraordinary move representatives from the LGBT+ groups in Conservatives, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Greens, Scottish National Party, Plaid Cymru and the Alliance Party said they “stand united” in their firm support for the transgender community."
Tory leadership contenders are making it clear that they do not stand with the LGBT+ community by feeding the damaging narrative that teaching LGBT+ inclusive education harms children.
Shame on you
@DominicRaab
and
@EstherMcVey1
- same old nasty party.
To every MP, whatever political party, who voted to support LGBT inclusive relationship and sex education - thank you.
Not so long ago this vote probably would have lost by a huge margin, and so yesterday was a reflection of just how far we have come.
MPs have just voted 383 - 73 in favour of introducing legislation for same sex marriage in Northern Ireland, if Stormount is not up and running in three months.
Huge thanks to
@ConorMcGinn
and all Labour MPs, members and
#LoveEquality
campaigners who have secured this win! 🏳️🌈
Thank you
@KeirStarmer
. We are pleased that you have recognised and apologised for this mistake. We look forward to working with you to end conversion therapy and achieve equality for LGBT+ people.
I completely disagree with Jesus House’s beliefs on LGBT+ rights, which I was not aware of before my visit. I apologise for the hurt my visit caused and have taken down the video. It was a mistake and I accept that.

When he became Prime Minister, Boris Johnson promised to protect LGBT+ people. Weeks into the job and it's revealed that he will stir up anti-trans hatred for political gain. This administration is reprehensible.
The party of Section 28 has not changed. They are not our allies.
“Number 10 has been polling “culture war” issues, such as transgender rights, to see whether they can be weaponised against Labour in northern working-class constituencies” says the Times’
@RSylvesterTimes
As Dominic Raab is appointed as Brexit Secretary let's not forget that this is a man who attempted to repeal the Human Rights Act and argued that feminism was bigotry.
This Tory government cannot and must not be trusted with our rights after Brexit.
We are disgusted to hear that this Tory government are kicking reform of the Gender Recognition Act into the long grass. Proving once again that the Tories do not care about the wellbeing of trans people. This is unforgivable.
Every June we mark a riot which fought back against police brutality towards our community.
LGBT+ people cannot remain silent on
#BlackLivesMatter
while celebrating
#PrideMonth
. It is our duty to speak up. We will do more than stand in solidarity, we will help you fight back.
This year, amid a global pandemic, celebrating
#TransDayOfVisibility
is more important than ever. For all those trans people who are having to stay at home in an environment where they cannot be themselves - you are seen, and you are loved.
#TDOV

Repealing Section 28 is part of Labour’s legacy of combating hatred and bigotry and we cannot allow people to try and roll back the clock.

From all of us at LGBT+ Labour we want to wish our non-binary members & supporters a Happy International Non-Binary People's Day!
Our friends at
@stonewalluk
have produced a handy 10 step guide on how you can step up as an ally to non-binary people:
This morning on
#PoliticsLive
,
@RhonddaBryant
had to watch Andy Scott refer to the last Labour government’s record on LGBT+ equality as ‘the gay thing’.
Let’s take a look at just how extensive that record is - THREAD.
We’re pleased that today
@UKLabour
NEC re-affirmed it’s commitment to Trans inclusion and to the existing policy of allowing Trans women to stand in all Womens shortlists!
LGBT+ Labour would like to apologise profoundly for the composition of the panel for our event “Remembering Maureen Colquhoun MP”. An invitation was made in error and it has been withdrawn.
Thank you to everyone who joined us at our leadership hustings tonight.
As a community we are stronger when we are united, not divided. We must and we will stand together as an L,G,B,T and + community.
Today marks 37 years since Chris Smith became the first MP to voluntarily come out as gay.
Chris proudly lends his name to our LGBT+ Candidates Fund - The Chris Smith List - and now sits in the House of Lords as Baron Smith of Finsbury.
On Wednesday MPs vote on inclusive and comprehensive RSE in schools – write to your Labour MP now and say:
✊ YES to solidarity with LGBT people
🚫 NO to rolling back LGBT rights
⛔ NO to Section 28 by the back door
Write to your MP now:
We are truly sorry to hear about the passing of the UK’s 1st openly lesbian MP, Maureen Colquhoun, who represented Northampton North in the 1970s.
A champion of women’s rights, she faced a hostile press when she was outed against her will. Her strength will be remembered.
Tonight we celebrated 50 years of Pride with some of our fantastic LGBT+ MPs in Parliament.
Wonderful to be joined by
@simonlightwood
too who was sworn in as the newest LGBT+ Labour MP just this afternoon!
There is nothing left wing about stirring up hatred against a minority community.
The left must unite to reject those who incite violence against trans people. We must defeat their bigoted ideology.
There's nothing charitable about LGB Alliance's thinly veiled attempt to divide the LGBT+ community. We'll continue to stand up for the rights of all members of the LGBT+ community, and are preparing to work with other LGBT+ organisations in thoroughly responding.
#LGBWithTheT
The visit was unacceptable and we made this clear to LOTO. We received an unreserved apology, and will be urgently meeting with them next week to ensure this does not happen again and that LGBT+ equality is embedded in everything that
@UKLabour
does.
We have spoken with the Leader of the Oppositions’s team regarding his visit to a church on Good Friday that does not align with our values on conversion therapy or LGBT+ equality.
We’ve seen claims that we are wrong on Starmer being the first Labour leader to march with us at Pride. We are not.
Corbyn visited London Pride as leader but never marched with us. Miliband marched with us in MCR 2010 before he was elected leader, he never joined us as leader.
If you would like to pay your respects for the tragic loss of Brianna Ghey, please find the list below of vigils organised across country to remember her by.
Rest In Peace
Roger Godsiff doesn't represent Labour. His support for the school gate protesters in Birmingham legtimises their attempts to vilify LGBT+ people and stir up tension.
We're calling on Labour MPs to attend his debate and show that Labour is committed to LGBT+ inclusive education.
Today is International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia & Transphobia.
Much has been achieved in the UK but there’s still a long way to to go.
We remain committed to campaigning for LGBT+ equality and against prejudice & discrimination here and around the world.
#IDAHOBIT
We may not be able to come together for
#prideinlondon
today, but next year we'll be back even bigger and better than ever. From everyone in LGBT+ Labour, we're wishing you a very happy
