Today is 20 years since @UKLabour repealed Section 28 in England and Wales. Our patron, @angelaeagle, reflects on the progress made in the fight for LGBT+ rights, and the long journey still ahead.

Today, on International Non-Binary People's Day, we recognise the contributions that non-binary people make to our LGBT+ community and wider society. We recommit ourselves to fighting for a country and world where all non-binary people are free to be themselves.

Delighted that the government will make LGBT+ hate crime an aggravated offence. Thank you to all our members and patrons for tirelessly campaigning on this. A Labour government delivering for LGBT+ people.
I'm delighted the government has accepted my amendment to make hate crimes against LGBT+ and disabled people aggravated offences, and will now table an amendment in the House of Lords to make it happen. Here's a bit of my speech on why this change is so important:

Thank you to our patron @RachelTaylorMP for highlighting some of the serious issues with @EHRC’s interim update on single sex spaces. We will continue to push for significant changes in the guidance being developed.
1/ Today’s @CommonsWEC session with the @EHRC will not have satisfied trans people that the EHRC understands their concerns, let alone wants to address them. It’s astonishing in this answer that the Chair said trans people have no reason to be worried and haven’t lost rights. 🧵

Ahead of the publication of finalised guidance, the EHRC must properly consult trans people and community groups. In our view, this will be best achieved by extending the consultation window from six to twelve weeks, in line with ordinary best practice for consultations.

It is our view that the update as it stands raises more questions than it answers, and increases the risk that transgender and gender nonconforming people will be subject to harassment, discrimination, and exclusion from vital services.

Following the publication of an interim update by the EHRC on the practical implications of the Supreme Court judgment last month, we've launched a petition outlining our concerns and calling for immediate changes ahead of the finalised guidance.
