The punchline is that white people can't tolerate spicy food. The reason it's a joke is that whether one can handle spice or not has nothing to do with ethnicity per se. So the reason it's funny is because Harris and Walz are obviously poking fun at that harmless stereotype.

You just proved my point. He didn't say he served in combat. He said he carried a weapon of war, in war. Which he did. It was called Operation Enduring Freedom. He defended bases in Italy. Were the odds of seeing combat good? Not especially, but the it was a wartime assignment.
