Though I yield to nobody in my view that BoJo was just about the least appropriate person to have as PM when Covid struck, I’m sceptical of the Hallet report’s claim that had he locked down a week earlier 23,000 lives would have been saved. First, it’s easy to be wise after the

Not often you hear a more insincere or patronising parliamentary contribution than this from the appalling Baroness Chapman. Obviously the Government doesn't care about the Chagossians' views because they are ignoring all evidence about their overwhelming opposition to the treaty

One of many entrepreneurs (wealth, tax and job creators) that are voting with their feet. “The issue is the absolutely amateurish, unstable, shooting-from-the-hip proposals.” “This is the danger of spooking people. Once you spook people, why should they trust you?”

It almost feels like Number 10 is staffed by Tory or Reform sleeper agents
Whichever strategic genius has decided that what is needed now is to trigger lots of speculation about @Keir_Starmer leadership is not as clever as they think. Whether done to shore him up or undermine him it is about as dumb as it gets. For heaven’s sake just get on with

Govt can cut benefits or raise taxes at a moment’s notice. Give nearly 20 years notice of an increase in pension age and apparently compensation may be due at a potential cost of billions; to be paid by younger generations. Ludicrous.

Excellent, excellent column this by Martin Wolf - capturing a neglected truth, which is this government is an 'Old Labour' one, not in the way it was useful for Blair and Corbyn to caricature, but in the 'how those governments actually governed (and mostly lost):

Taking from my pensions savings to deliver inflation busting increases to state pension spending today. The cruel irony here is there’s no way I’m getting state pension. The system will have long since collapsed by the time I retire. Good to know more will be taken from me to

If true, this is a terrible idea. We should be encouraging more pension savings, not taking steps to reduce private pension pots

Because he is Sir David Beckham, she is now Lady Victoria Beckham. But if she had become Dame Victoria Beckham, he would still just be Mr Beckham. Time to correct this sexist injustice.

Delighted that I and @WeAreBrightBlue have co-authored this new paper on tax reform. The think tanks co-authoring may not all agree on the scale, specifics, speed and substitutions of the proposed tax reforms, but we all believe in the direction of travel. Impressive to have

Everyone's talking about tax rises - but what about tax fixes? In a pretty unusual intervention, @CPSThinkTank has teamed up with @CenTaxUK, @ASI, @IPPR, @NEF, @jrf_uk, @WeAreBrightBlue, @LabourTogether & @DanNeidle to argue for sweeping, pro-growth tax reform & simplification.

There is a solution vs giving away the Chagos Islands for £47bn Tony Blair commissioned a KPMG report (2015) It found: ✅ Chagossian resettlement possible 🇬🇧 UK sovereignty protected 🛡️ Diego Garcia security protected 💷 Less than £2bn over 100 years Insanity strikes again

Odd speech from chancellor. In one sense fair enough to blame last govt for problems. But wrong to pretend all utterly unexpected and couldn’t possibly have been predicted at election or budget last year. We knew the risks when tax promises were made. And so did she.
