🎉Another exciting episode of the New Economics Podcast out now! This week @AyeishaTS was joined by @KeirMilburn and @francesnorthrop to talk about the failure of privatisation, what radical abundance means, and how communities are building alternatives to capitalism.

This government should be aiming to build 90,000 social homes a year - these homes will go to the people who need them most, easing pressure on the private rented market. 2/2

A social housebuilding programme on the scale needed would bring £225bn in economic and social benefits, according to the New Economics Foundation.

Whenever the UK has managed to build more than 300,000 homes a year, local authorities have been building a significant portion of them. It's new socials homes, not a reliance on profit-driven private developers, which will enable housebuilding. 1/2
The problem Labour have now got is... 1.5m new homes was always unachievable because of the state of the market, not just building But, now, it's being treated as a missed target and levers are being pulled to do something never possible to do... https://t.co/WtwbWYna6B

As one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history smashes into the Caribbean, new research finds that millions of people are dying each year from rising heat. These events are a direct result of our failure to tackle the climate crisis.
The warming effects of climate change have seen the rate of heat-related deaths surge 23% since the 1990s - to over 546,000 a year - according to the ninth Lancet Countdown Report on Health and Climate Change

Great to see that following my colleague Chaitanya Kumar's oral evidence session in June, the Treasury Select Committee has endorsed our recommendation for the Treasury to explore the merits of allowing the NWF to borrow funds directly from the market. https://t.co/ZgjSnIAhMa

To escape this situation which binds us to austerity, we need reform. The OBR should be replaced with an Office for Fiscal Transparency, to ensure there is democratic debate over the state of the economy and spending isn't needlessly and prematurely cut.

Forecasting is inherently uncertain - but our broken fiscal framework means these inexact estimates result in the government making real decisions of huge consequence to the economy.

The OBR's changed its mind on what the economy will look like in 5 years time so now Rachel Reeves needs to raise taxes or cut spending to the value of £20bn? This is clearly not a sensible or sustainable way to run an economy.

Great to see our research on frequent flyers being discussed in the House of Lords! It's this tiny percentage of the population who will benefit the most from airport expansion, while the rest of us have to live with the environmental consequences.
The govt backs Heathrow expansion — but it’s not all or most of Britain that wants to fly more. Just 3% of people take 30% of all flights. A few frequent flyers get the perks, while everyone else gets the noise, air pollution and climate chaos. #ClimateJustice | @NEF
