We achieved a huge mandate in @utfaculty 's presidential election! #TeamTerezia 's decisive win was earned via a smart, positive & constructive campaign, with members' interests at the centre of our agenda. A resounding 'NO' to hate + mudslinging & 'YES' to truth + solidarity.

Worst of all: Q. Can we require students who are evidently sick to stay home? A: No, you don’t have that right. What fresh hell is this ideology of individual choice mattering more than the common good when we share the air and how dare anyone pretend it’s public health?

Yesterday @utfaculty spoke with senior @UofT Administration about urgent need to assure students, staff, faculty, and librarians that the mask mandate will continue after May 1st. We cited all the other Ontario universities who were aligning with science. UofT isn’t there yet.

This ought not be a hard decision, @UofT ! Too late to lead on this but at least follow Brock, York, Guelph, McMaster, and Queens universities in extending protections.

“Delta changing rules of the game” to heighten risk. ⁦ @UofT ⁩ + @OntUniv ⁩ should NOT be pushing ⁦ @fordnation ⁩ to exempt universities from stage 3 indoor occupancy limits. Tell them to stop. Full, crowded, classrooms of 100s+ is madness.

I’ve held sr ed positions with “Equity” in my title (e.g. @tdsb & @OISEUofT ) . If my EDI talking point was a combo of “we respect all choices when it comes to masking” + “we are encouraging but not mandating masking” and I said so while unmasked, I would implode from the shame.

Basic math problem for university (e.g., of Toronto) senior administrators: If lifting mask mandates leads to many more additional missed school days, how many more students, staff, librarians, and faculty are you expecting will get ill as a result of your political decision?

I guess if you don’t show human faces that’s one way to sidestep one’s hypocrisy on masking. No mask mandate = no moral leadership on accessibility. And it’s not inclusive to leave immunocompromised members of your university to fend for themselves.

Today's COVID update via @utfaculty . I still can't get over this: "We are still amidst the seventh wave of a deadly pandemic, with levels of test positivity, wastewater signals, hospitalizations, and deaths higher than this date in 2021 and 2020." Should any of us be over it?

There are many reasons why @utfaculty should listen to public health scientists & prefer their advice to that of Dr. Moore & the Ford team. Their 2020 recognition that COVID is airborne & why that matters for @UofT and everyone's safety is just one of them. Thx @nb_covid_info

Good question! How does a prof individually clean the air of viruses exhaled by hundreds of semi-vaccinated undergraduates crowded into a Victorian-era lecture theatre in which she’s scheduled to teach? Is there a button on the workstation one can press for assistance?

I asked the same question at a recent @OISEUofT joint health and safety meeting last week. If you wouldn’t drink water that hadn’t been properly monitored/tested/cleaned why would you want to breathe in contaminated air that had never been properly monitored/tested/cleaned?

Universities owe a duty of care not only to their faculty, librarians, staff and students but ALSO to their broader communities. UBC, Queen’s, St.FX, Western, Windsor, McGill and others have let their communities down. Educational spaces are not magically immune, FFS.

@uoft ’s decision to reclassify mask-wearing as a personal choice fails on multiple levels. It fails to recognize that bc we share the air, the significant COVID risks in our academic workplaces can only be reduced through coordinated & collective action such as universal masking

Failure to account for COVID's airborne transmission is one of the major reasons why UofT’s Reopening Plan is NOT Safe Enough. @UofT must ’take a pause’ on most in-person teaching for the Fall 2020 semester in favour of online-only teaching. @DFisman
