this SUV is parked on the sidewalk completely blocking an accessible entrance to the voting location at Dominica Manor. Anyone who needs step-free access would have to circle the block. Infuriating. Any way we can get a tow?
@R0b0tSp1der
@RISecState
The times when I had a car, relied on it for work, but didn’t have enough money for a tow fee, I never would have left my car like this in a place where it might get towed. (Not that I would leave a car on the sidewalk anyway.)
#Providence
is literally dancing in the streets for peace and justice.
The state police just said we’re unlawfully assembled. Gave us 10 minutes before police are deployed to use “appropriate force”
@vinbuenviaj
@RISecState
Some people need to drive and park close to their destination. Some people can’t drive and need curb cuts.
If you cared about access, you’d care about everybody’s access. Stop using disabled people to justify this driver’s bad behavior.
@grampy57
@RISecState
Actually I was literally there and it was fully blocked.
There was plenty of parking. I parked on the street just out of frame. There were ~12 empty spots just on a single side of that short block.
Alright folks. If you owned Ogies, would you rather have your bar next door to:
- a dumb apartment building full of customers 🤮
or
- a super cool empty pit in the ground!! 🤩
I’m officially joining the race for Governor and my entire platform is reverse the direction of half the escalators at Providence Place so you don’t have to walk all the way around on every single floor.
When tourists post photos of what they like about Providence, they post our city’s walkable riverfront park and vibrant downtown core. People don’t come to Providence for drag racing on stroads.
Bike and pedestrian infrastructure is good for business.

I know your comment is tongue in cheek. But if you get to your polling place and can’t get inside, it’s too late to get a mail ballot.
After going to a bar in the Jewelry District tonight, my last bus home was cancelled with no notice. I was waiting at the stop with half a dozen others. The bus just never showed up.
How is this acceptable?? How do we build a sustainable economy if people can’t even get around??
@ryangrim
Respectfully, Ryan, as a staunchly pro-electoral leftist in Rhode Island who did not support Aaron, please listen to the Rhode Islanders, leftist and liberal, who supported lots of different candidates, who are saying this is not at all what happened.
I still can’t get over the fact that Rhode Island has a fully electrified, double/triple tracked train line that goes directly through the dense, historic downtowns of our four largest cities AND connects directly to our international airport and we run no real service on it.

LMAO the 38 Studios guy is against $10k in student debt cancellation.
You might remember he got over $72 *MILLION* he owed to Rhode Island taxpayers forgiven.
My body my choice? Your loan my responsibility? This isn’t loan forgiveness, it’s a generation of lazy unaccountable uneducated children being covered by hard working debt paying Americans.

You’re defending someone parking on the sidewalk entrance of an apartment building full of older folks who don’t drive when there was a whole block of free parking less than 10 feet away.
And no, there wasn’t space to go around. Not with a wheelchair, not with a walker.
Politics aside…
The Matos signature scandal is not evidence that our elections are unsafe. The scandal is evidence that our elections *are* safe.
The fraud was caught & an investigation will result in action, because that’s exactly how the system was designed: to catch fraud.
Ok I NEED to know more about this “train bus” (?!?!?) that used to run on the trestle track through Wakefield and Peace Dale!
Does anyone have info about how this worked and when it ran?
Also note:
@BrownUniversity
, with its enormous endowment, is putting strain on the city’s resources when it could handle the matter completely internally.
Brown called Providence police to University Hall to arrest its own students, even though Brown has its own police force.

Wild how people can acknowledge these places are expensive because everyone wants to live here and they're illegal to build... and the conclusion is still "don't build more expensive places like this" not "fix the laws and build more good places like this"

I know it's not safe. But the real issue is city leaders won't build enough infrastructure for people outside cars. I get why people ride mopeds over a 1.3 mile, 100+ ft elevation bridge built for cars when the shores are 0.3 miles apart. Convert a car lane to a 2 way moped lane.
I mapped out the named squares* of Providence!
*and a bunch of other public spaces that memorialize the people of Providence like plazas, piazzas, parks, parkways, fountains, tot lots, little league fields, and even a telephone pole.

As we venture back outside, I encourage everyone to look around at what the snow is showing us: we give cars much more space than they really need. Around me, I see ultra-wide ⬇️⬇️⬆️⬆️ and ⬇️⬇️↖️⬆️⬆️ roads that should be ⬇️⬆️ roads. Let’s build our places for people, not cars.

I'll touch the rail.
Rhode Island representatives only make $17k per year (pre-tax!), and that's criminal.
Everyone deserves to be fairly compensated for the work they do. Even the legislators I desperately want to see replaced.
How much to pay elected officials is one of those "third rail" issues that probably has a bigger effect on who runs (and what they do in office) than we want to admit
In her departure, don’t forget:
@GinaRaimondo
was a horrible governor who slashed health funding pre-pandemic, appointed fossil fuel industry picks left & right, forced the state to invest with her own VC firm, tear gassed peaceful protestors, and abandoned her state months ago.
A car nearly hit me crossing Memorial Blvd just now. I did everything right - waited for the ped light, looked both ways, and used a crosswalk.
But this 70 (!) foot long crosswalk is not safe, even though it “connects” the East Side and Downcity.
On this morning's roundtable,
@IanDonnis
asked RIDOT Director Alviti “how does Rhode Island compare to other states on pedestrian injuries and deaths?”
What Alviti said next was one of the most misleading distortions of data I have ever heard:
#RI
#NationalGuard
is lining up “defending” the state house, DSW, and Cheesecake Factory from the *peaceful* protestors.
Clearly they heard about
#CheesecakeGirl
@ob_cycler
Icing on the cake is that this is the crosswalk connecting San Diego’s second largest train station with the San Diego headquarters of the California DOT.
PVD can’t offset global emissions, but we *can* cool down our city:
- depave empty lots that store heat
- plant trees that absorb heat
- build buildings that provide shade
- upgrade buildings for energy efficiency
- transpo alternatives to reduce heat from cars
What else?
We are firmly in the "find out" phase of the climate emergency, after ~70 years of fucking around. Everybody hold onto your hats - this will be probably be the driest, coolest summer of the rest of our lives.
I am so excited for the
@RIPTA_RI

thinking about the time I got bit by a dog while canvassing and I remembered the vet I met the day before was around the corner, and he was cute and I thought we hit it off, so I knocked his door and said I got bit by a dog and he was like sir I am a vet?? go to the hospital????
This Labor Day weekend, my mom and I visited Slater Mill in Pawtucket, the city where her grandfather worked in the mills. It’s hard to imagine the exploitation that workers, especially children, endured in what is now this beautiful park. I’m very grateful for the workers 1/
Welp. The RI House just voted 40-29 to DOUBLE the political donation limit and DOUBLE the anonymous donation limit.
You can now single-handedly buy an election in Rhode Island.
Why can the house vote on the rules for their own elections? How will we hold them accountable?

WTF is happening to the

Party???
This isn’t just “wow! What crazy rain!”
This is the beginning of the climate crisis that we knew was coming.
If we want to survive this, we need to start building green, resilient infrastructure *now*.
“Young people don’t vote,” says the CNN pundit as me and all my friends (who requested and returned our mail ballots a month ago) get up at 5am to go campaign at the polls.
I've lost count of how many times it's flooded in Rhode Island this summer.
It is terrifying how quickly we accepted this as normal.
@GovDanMcKee
@Sabina_Matos
where is the response?! this is an emergency! We need to repave and build resilient infrastructure now!!
There’s some things I agree with the Mayor on, and some things I disagree with. That’s politics.
Until now, I have always respected his insistence on making data-informed decisions.
His opposition to public safety and the S Water trail is an incredibly disappointing departure.
Finally, we're adjusting our bike paths along S. Water Street to restore the lanes of travel to two lanes, while preserving vital bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure. Community input will be sought as we refine these plans throughout Summer 2024.
I haven’t been able to spend the night at
#SleepOutRI
yet because of my work schedule. If I didn’t go back home, where would I shower, brush my teeth, get my clean clothes? How would I show up on time?
And yet we snidely tell unhoused people to “just get a job”. How? How???
I’m at
#SleepOutRI
rn. My thoughts:
1) These are some strong folks out here.
2) Cars have honked their support, but the rest of the world continues to turn like this is normal. People sleeping in tents, people freezing to death, this isn’t normal! It doesn’t have to be his way!
Literally every single monopoly game ends with one person owning all the property and everyone else bankrupt and unable to afford rent, and for some reason we’ve all agreed to run our economy like a game of monopoly.
The cost of the Amtrak station at TF Green could fund state RIPTA funding for 38 years.
Do we want to make every bus route in the state run 15 minutes or better? Or do we want an Amtrak airport stop?
If you make $20/hr and buy a $10 sandwich, you're taxed $3 or 15% of your wage.
If you make $100/hr and buy the sandwich, you're taxed $3 or 3% of your wage.
That's not a "Fair Tax". It's just another Republican handout for the rich paid for by the middle class.
Kevin McCarthy has proposed a vote on a proposal called the Fair Tax, which would abolish the current federal income tax and replace it with a 30% national sales tax. 30 percent.
I love new rail infrastructure but Rhode Island needs a comprehensive, sensible rail plan that includes rapid/metro, commuter, and intercity. We need to be efficient with our funds and build transit people will actually use - not piecemeal build a new station every few years.
I love fare-free transit as much as anyone. But it is crazy that the 67 (for tourists visiting Newport mansions and Salve students who have U-Pass) is fare-free, while the routes serving the public housing in north Newport cost $2 cash.
A large crowd of protestors (400?) just marched up Francis St to reinforce the people still at the State House.
State police said we now have until 8:30.
@ryangrim
2000 votes? This is a Rhode Island Labor Day Special. What is now a ~3,000 vote lead is also a 7.6 point lead in a field of 12 candidates in an extremely low-turnout election. He simply lost. Just as the candidate I supported simply lost.
Google says Providence to Pawtucket is 12 minutes by car, but it'll be only 6 minutes by train!
And that's even comparing an antiquated diesel rail line with the world's most extensive and expensive highway system.
🚉Pawtucket/Central Falls Station is opening in 6 days!
🙋Get ready Providence Line passengers because the new Pawtucket/Central Falls station is opening for service between Providence & Attleboro on Monday, January 23rd.

I’m with
@MSanchezPVD
: we demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
@GovDanMcKee
, a Democrat (!), fired Miguel for speaking out. If McKee disagrees with a ceasefire, what does he want? More violence and death?? Shame on him.
On Friday, I was fired by Governor McKee for my public position on the atrocities occurring in Gaza. Since Oct. 7, I have used my voice as an elected official to condemn all violence against any innocent civilians.

I want to share why I’m supporting two people in particular who are running for office in Rhode Island. cw for abuse.
Earlier this summer/fall, one of my roommates became physically abusive and I had to leave my apartment while I waited for a restraining order.
Don’t make college free.
Make it paid.
Being a student is a *full time job*. College students should be paid to study, like they are in other countries.
And let’s end this thing where we joke about 20-somethings subsisting on ramen bc they can’t afford fresh food. Not funny.

Act.
I was gonna call it a day, but then I got a call from our rep
@CBlazejewski
and he declined to support it.
Time to head back out.
And this is exactly the issue. Young voters are always expected to give up their priorities to not alienate older voters. We *never* ask older voters to give up their priorities to not alienate younger voters. That’s not a coalition, it’s a toxic relationship.
@ProfMKavanagh
What does "accountable" mean? "I will let Trump win unless you do the thing I want, even if my demands might alienate others in the same coalition who would be more likely to vote than me?"
That's not good politics.
RI public school teachers already worked so hard for too little, then incredibly kept everything running through the pandemic.
But calling out the privatization of
@pvdschools
gets them painted as self-interested meddlers by admins and pols. (It’s the other way round). Shameful.
Mayor Smiley is raising our property taxes to spend an additional $8M on the police, up from $100M.
Meanwhile, we spend only $130M on Providence schools. No increase from last year.
Providence schools are failing but the police have shiny new cruisers. Make it make sense.
Mayor Smiley's proposal would increase the residential property tax rate in Providence while cutting the commercial rate.
If you want to do the math on your tax bill the proposed rates are in the story:
