No way around: we must clean indoor air. The costs to our workforce and death toll will continue to skyrocket until we do. Do NOT be short sighted & say it's too expensive! We made changes to filter water. Now we must do air. Make 2023 the year the world woke up! #cleanindoorair

8/ But what is increasingly, blindingly obvious to me: if we don't implement some level of NPIs until we develop second-generation high-efficacy vaccines and / or better therapeutics, we will not get off this downward spiral of plummeting overall population health.

Should you upgrade to a P100? I do my best to make the case that it's best to focus on fit first, before moving to higher filtration. Also there are penalties to be had to going to higher filtration. N95's & KF94/KN95/FFP2 are the sweet spot IMO. https://t.co/9USMj90nso

The call for members for ASHRAE Standard 241 is now open at the ASHRAE web site. Committee members need not be ASHRAE members - but they need to have qualifications we need and to be willing to work very hard for about the next six months.

Germicidal UV lamps can disinfect circulating air, but their wavelengths could also produce air pollutants. @ZheP_AtmChem, @ShellyMBoulder and @jljcolorado at modeled the reactions initiated by by UVC sanitizing light. More about this research: https://t.co/XWznHQPv9A @CIRESnews

Don't forget to vent this Thanksgiving by operating your range hood. One of the most under-utilized tool in our homes! It took me three trials to find a range hood with high exhaust airflow. I also retroffited my hood to vent to the outside (and not recirculate air). 1/4

The bottom line is pretty straightforward. It is very doubtful that this technology is working as advertised in any of the thousands of school buildings where it has been installed. As @jljcolorado said two years ago - "you can't clean the air with chemistry."

Thank goodness for this timely study conducted by the EPA on bipolar ionization. It shows that this product is not effective in a chamber representing a "large scale environment." The chamber is 3,000 ft.3 - about half the size of the average classroom. https://t.co/d4hOBzT69B

Using AHAM CADR recommendations this translates into an effective room size of 51 square feet (a closet). In the understatement of the year, the report concludes that this is “small compared to many of the intended use cases for these devices.” (Schools are a good example.)

Short summary: This USB-powered mini-Corsi-Rosenthal box of mine is way better in filtering air than ionizers masquerading as air purifiers.

To put this into perspective, a single $400 portable HEPA air filter, or Corsi-Rosenthal DIY air filter box we have bought and built for less than $100, produce ten times MORE clean air than this bipolar ionization technology. But this tech is what a lot of schools invested in.

For those who follow residential IAQ standards, there have been a couple of positive recent developments in ASHRAE Std 62.2 1) UL 2998 ozone compliance requirement for air cleaners (as in 62.1) 2) Minimum filter efficiency increased to MERV 11 from MERV 6 (now better than 62.1)
