The governor of Darfur, Minni Arkou Minnawi, has told Middle East Eye that 27,000 Sudanese were killed in just three days as paramilitary Rapid Support Forces went on a killing spree after seizing el-Fasher late last month https://t.co/8z0R7LQipm

https://t.co/Nvb35rM8GS. Great piece by @MariaRepnikova. "Beijing is more interested in legitimizing its distinctive path than in convincing others to follow in its footsteps. Highlighting the stark contrasts between China and the United States may suffice for now."

I spoke to two dozen BBC journalists, from frontline reporters to senior staff, about how the BBC came to symbolise the West's failure to prevent genocide in Gaza - and how the row over its coverage fed directly into the current meltdown. https://t.co/5J6EnMkJYs

Counterpoint: Mamdani put out a 2-minute ad specifically about trans rights — including vowing to make New York City a sanctuary for trans people — 3.5 weeks before the election (see below). This is, of course, after pledging to spend $65M on healthcare for trans New Yorkers.
Mamdani effectively neutralized hot-button issues like trans rights and instead relentlessly focused on the cross-partisan goal of affordability. In this sense, he's more like Bernie Sanders circa 2016 than Bernie Sanders (or everyone else) circa 2020.

The degree to which Mamdani makes this stuff look easy is really remarkable. Hakeem hemmed and hawwed on endorsing him for months creating countless process stories. Zohran could’ve done the petty thing or given a word salad non answer but instead this:
KRISTEN WELKER: If Democrats win the midterms do you want to see Leader Jeffries become the speaker of the House? MAYOR-ELECT ZOHRAN MAMDANI: Yes. KRISTEN WELKER: Okay. That was a firm, quick answer.

Welker: Do you think that President Trump is a fascist? Mamdani: That’s something that I’ve said in the past. I say it today. Welker: You’ve called him a despot. Do you still believe President Trump is a threat to the democracy? Mamdani: Everything that I’ve said in the past,

There’s definitely something to this, but I think the fact that JD Vance wasn’t invited is a sign that Trump didn't want a confrontation.
Given how much Zohran Mamdani was able to charm Trump, you have to wonder how much Zelensky blew it in that meeting earlier in the year. It doesn't seem all that hard to at least get Trump chummy with you for the day. He probably screwed up not wearing a suit.

Some Europeans had tried to convince themselves that Trump was coming around to position of sustained support for Ukraine’s fight. In fact, Trump’s calculus on the war — for all its zigs and zags — has all along been guided by four consistent elements: 1. Trump doesn’t think

This is highly unusual. The report in question was pretty bland, but one of the most pragmatic things I’ve seen come out of DC in a while. I wrote about it here

This is a pretty big, early showing of strength by @ZohranKMamdani as he contends with a restless base looking to take on establishment politicians. Shows they’re willing to trust him as he plays the inside game.
New: @nycDSA narrowly votes to not endorse Chi Osse's primary challenge against Rep. Hakeem Jeffries. This comes after @ZohranKMamdani directly urged the group to not back Osse's run. Osse previously signaled he'd likely not run without a DSA endorsement.

Respect to NYC DSA for this whole process, man. Impressive, deeply considered, transparent, democratic - all good, v cool and inspiring
Gonna beat @petersterne to the punch on this one: NYC-DSA will not be backing Chi Osse in his primary challenge against Hakeem Jeffries!

What is Zohran’s plan to deal with people who block your view at the Beacon Theater filming the performer with their phone? I fear social workers aren’t up to the task and we will need to bring in the National Guard.

He got serenaded by drag queens, and shot videos about trans rights. The way he “neutralized” this as an “hot-button issue” was by *not listening* to the commentariat at all, and everyone being 10x more obsessed with Israel and calling him a communist.
