Again, I don't think I misunderstood your position. I just disagree with it. You believe that the wrecking of the Middle East has been, in your words, an "exception" to the character of U.S. empire. I believe that this is actually its core priority. https://t.co/Xj3MwunPX9
Contra @matthew_petti, a major argument in my book is that the US has chosen *not* to use its power with Middle Eastern countries, certainly not in any recognizably moral way. I've been one of the most outspoken critics around of US funding Arab dictatorships. My argument has

Yes, my book is about "what America could be and what it needs to be to live up to its ideals." We need to try to be better than we actually are, even if the gap between ideals and reality leads to charges of hypocrisy.

I don't think my book is a "paean to empire" as some critical reviewers have suggested. It's more a paean to an America as an idea or a faith. How real is that America? I wrestle with this, which is why I've described my book as an "anguished manifesto." https://t.co/lSFdSM52zE

From acclaimed author Shadi Hamid comes an urgent and deeply personal argument for why American dominance, despite its many flaws, remains the world’s best hope. Hamid traces his journey from...

The piece by @thoughtgenerate also serves as a brilliant standalone essay on the future of American power, morality, and democracy. This his strongest challenge to me: He asks if the America I admire and idealize "still exists or even if it ever existed" https://t.co/6uKb2iU0Z1

The political theorist @thoughtgenerate weighs in on my new book, calling it "an increasingly rare spectacle." Grateful to him for both the kind words and thoughtful criticisms. Yes, my case is "uphill" to say the least. https://t.co/vk1s6WogIK

What's frustrating about this @matthew_petti review of my book is that he incorrectly says "although Hamid doesn't defend the Iraq war outright, he says it shows that US power is better than the alternatives." This is simply not accurate. I spend pages talking about my own

This deeply intimate report on how Israeli surveillance technology has reshaped Palestinian life by @mrmhawish is absolutely gutting https://t.co/e3qpfOd0Fp
I spent sixteen months reporting this story. It was deep, painful, and at times unbearable. It follows how surveillance tech is rewriting Gaza in real time — and what it’s doing to the people inside it. Read in @NYMag

Netanyahu’s political survival requires perpetual war. He won’t stop until he is stopped.
⭕️ Netanyahu told the NYT Dealbook Summit that Israel’s war on Palestinians and regional resistance movements is something that can never truly end: “We won this war. But it’s never ending. It’s like… if you have cancer and you take it out, it can still come back in certain

Likewise, although I disagree with Shadi's book, I think it's definitely worth reading and engaging with. He's been a great intellectual sparring partner and unlike many people on here he has fundamentally good intentions.
Obviously I don't agree that my book is a "paean to American empire" but I can see how some might see it that way. Worth reading @matthew_petti's review even though I disagree with much of it.

Agreement is nice. Disagreement is better. @shadihamid brought this energy to our salon with @TheAnnaGat, tackling Oikophobia and the case for U.S. power. Have a thesis that challenges the consensus? Bring your expertise to our stage. Start hosting: https://t.co/HQRlcvwmbW

This was a very cool salon! Go read @shadihamid's new book!!!
"Morality needs power to be real. Otherwise, we're stuck in a stance of moral purity... that doesn't actually improve people's lives." In a recent salon with @TheAnnaGat, @shadihamid challenges progressives to get "in the game." Power without morality is dangerous, but morality

Here's my tough but fair review of @shadihamid's paean to American empire. "Like a communist arguing that true communism has never been tried, Hamid constantly gestures at the theoretical possibility of a kinder, gentler U.S. empire." https://t.co/N9JdQwDB9H

@OrigenOfSpices I actually don't think many countries would be doing what Israel is doing, killing more civilians than the US killed in 8 years in Iraq from 2003 to 2011. Maybe some of the more brutal dictatorships, but even the Syrian regime couldn't reach the same civilian casualty numbers

The attacks on Ms Rachel, whose entire political ideology appears to be that "children are good and should not be killed," really show you how fanatical and insane Israel's defenders have become.
Since 10/7, Ms. Rachel has pushed Hamas propaganda to millions - sharing debunked images, inflated casualty claims, and almost entirely ignoring Israeli child victims. She also hosted Motaz Azaiza, a terrorist sympathizer who celebrated the 10/7 massacre & openly idolizes Yahya

Al Sharpton and Shadi Hamid discuss the inherent goodness of America and its ability to self-correct.
In this part of the segment with @TheRevAl, I talk about American democracy's ability to self-correct and renew itself. We get the government — and the foreign policy — we deserve. That part is up to us. https://t.co/cGQx6NQ3bb
