In @nytopinion I write that President Trump is failing to be a peacemaker. He is not on track to reduce America’s military involvement in the world and is keeping the United States in a position that invites more wars, potentially much larger ones. Gift link below.

“Not dependents, but partners” is a pretty good way to phrase it.
In his first public appearance since becoming undersecretary, Elbridge Colby tells the Korean National Day event that South Korea is a model ally. — Trump administration wants to work with allies that are not dependents but partners — It is especially fitting to call Seoul an

An update on the war following a recent trip. Ukrainian forces are holding, but the situation has worsened since July due to mounting offensive pressure. Here I cover some of the negative and positive trends, along with the salient dynamics at the front. Long thread. 1/

In a day rich with conservative infighting I thought this was a notable tweet:
During recent visit in DC, the talk of everyone was how overt the corruption was. It's at levels you read about in history books. In nearly every department. Lots of, "Do people just think Democrats will never win and they'll all get away with this?"

This “new path” is the old path, only more so — doubling down on defending the Gulf states, now with an explicit security guarantee. And just like at almost every point for the last three decades, the promise is that peace and stability in the Middle East lies just around the
The United States has an opportunity to put the Middle East on a more stable path—but it must align expectations with its regional partners and reinvigorate diplomacy to “take advantage of this rare moment,” write James Jeffrey and @LizyDent. https://t.co/VQ2S1t1Lsx

The most I’m willing to pledge is to send a troupe of formerly canceled comedians to rally spirits in Riyadh — though that sort of guarantee might be harder to get through the Senate than a troop commitment.

A pledge to go to war to defend the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia against anyone who might attack it — what could go wrong?
"The United States can secure its modest interests in the region without maintaining a major military presence, and certainly without pledging to fight on behalf of Riyadh," write experts @capreble and Will A. Smith in their latest op-ed on @RStatecraft. https://t.co/f5jdZLdnit

"These are regulatory tariffs. They are not revenue-raising tariffs." --Solicitor General John Sauer to SCOTUS last week
Tariff revenues SMASH records—slashing the U.S. deficit by over 25%! Shrinking government spending, downsizing bloated bureaucracy, and unleashing a wave of American jobs. 🔥

"Regime collapse" is regime change, not an alternative. Seeking to avoid boots on the ground restricts the hoped-for methods, but the objective would be regime change. And if air strikes proved as ineffective at ousting leaders as they almost always do, the U.S. would have to
#Venezuela: With respect to the @NicolasMaduro regime: "Rather than a ground invasion aimed at regime change, regime collapse seems to be a much more promising theory of change, and it is worth pursuing," I wrote in @ForeignPolicy this week. Latest: https://t.co/Osr3TdIAWB

Fascinating from @DamonLinker. One more thing to note: Buchanan also wrote after 9/11 that the attacks were caused in part by U.S. policies in the Middle East, so the right would have arrived sooner at the current mix of impulses to crush overseas enemies and withdraw.
