Introducing "China Global," a new GMF podcast hosted by

that will explore the different facets of
#China
's foreign policy and what they mean for the rest of the world.
Stay tuned here for the release of episode one!
China warns against Japan PM's attendance at NATO summit. Will they also warn the leaders of Korea, Australia, and New Zealand? Why single out Japan? And why does China have the right to tell countries how to pursue their own national interests? .
PLA is fully capable of destroying all of Taiwan's military installations within a few hours, before seizing the island shortly after. Chinese army & people have such self-confidence. At the same time, we strongly support maintaining peace. Sparking a conflict should be avoided.
"Home-made" is not exactly a complete description. Many of the most important systems aboard (like the avionics and engines) come from Western countries with a lot more experience in modern commercial jets.
Former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe created the concept of a Free and Open Indo-Pacific. The Quad evolved from his "security diamond" concept. His contribution to Japanese foreign policy and regional security was enormous. His death is a huge loss. RIP
A quick thread on Blinken's visit to China -- Day 1: The readouts by both sides are fairly positive --more positive than I expected. The PRC readout says "China is committed to building a stable, predictable, and constructive China-U.S. relationship." That's important. 1/n
Typical PRC thinking: Since China's power is growing, all other countries have to concede to Chinese demands, including on sovereignty disputes, and compromise their own interests.
#Opinion
: It is laughable to see
#India

with fighters jets ordered years ago. New Delhi needs to wake up. The gap between India's national strength and China's is widening.
@willripleyCNN
This comparison is completely wrong. It feeds a false narrative that Beijing will almost certainly propagate. A real journalist should know the difference. If you don't, do some research about Hong Kong. HK protesters were not conducting a coup.
@DerekJGrossman
If you view these decisions as "giving" and "taking" then it isn't surprising that you are perplexed and vexed. India acts in its own self-interest, which doesn't always align with Western interests.
"Taiwan's vulnerability is forcing Washington to act. It's why Taiwanese ground troops are being dispatched to the US to train and US trainers are coming to Taipei to embed with Taiwan's marines and special forces." Good piece by

Macron's office "insisted on 'proofreading' all the president’s quotes...as a condition of granting the interview...some parts...in which the president spoke even more frankly about Taiwan and Europe’s strategic autonomy were cut out by the Elysée."
A PRC military commentator argues that the Bucha massacre was staged. The war is the fault of the US, NATO, and Ukraine. Russia has no responsibility. This is likely a widely shared view in China.
"One could argue that [the Bucha massacre] was staged; after all, Zelensky is an actor doing what actors are trained to do" - Professor Song Zhongping, a military commentator for Phoenix TV, blames everyone but the Russian forces for the atrocities in Bucha.

Elections held in
#Taiwan
can't change cross-Strait situation. The one-
#China
principle is international consensus. We firmly oppose Taiwan inpendence and any external interference. We look to the European side to continue to abide by the one-China principle.
What terrific questions! UN Resolution 2758 does not mention the "one China" policy or principle. And yes, the people of Taiwan are citizens of the world. They shouldn't be barred from entering UN HQ, and Taiwan should be allowed to participate in UN activities.
This is how the
@UN
respond to any Taiwan-related questions.
#Taiwan
, Asia's leading democracy, is excluded from the UN system, while
#Russia

The UN needs to be radically reformed.

Everyone needs to calm down about war with China, Gen. Mark Milley said. The Joint Chiefs chairman warned against the rise of “overheated” rhetoric of a looming U.S. war with China, and he said he doubts China’s chances of “conquering” Taiwan.
Don't know what's inspired this media attack on Vincent Chao, but he's one of Taiwan's brightest and best diplomats. V bright, works around the clock, fantastically well-connected among foreign diplomats, will represent Taiwan well wherever he goes. Enough already.
On Sept 2, 78 years ago, Japan signed the Instrument of Surrender. During the Anti-Japanese War, Chinese military and civilian casualties exceeded 35 million.
Chinese people won't forget the history of blood&tears. This scene should be remembered the most by Japanese themselves.

My takeaways from this chart: 1) attitudes toward Taiwan in many countries are quite positive; 2) a large % of people don't know enough about Taiwan to have an opinion.
@MOFA_Taiwan
, there is more work to do in Europe, Canada, Indonesia, India and across Africa!
This is underappreciated: China is preparing the ground to pin blame on the US in the event that it attacks Taiwan: And one diplomat says it is succeeding: "In a crisis, many Asian neighbours would blame America and its ally Japan for stirring tensions."
I'll go further than that. With the referendum on pork failing to gain a majority, let's negotiate a bilateral free trade agreement with Taiwan. Both sides will benefit. And then other countries may follow.
With the referendum on pork failing to gain a majority, let’s finally put this long-standing bilateral irritant behind us and continue to strengthen our economic relations with Taiwan on supply chains, technologies, and other emerging issues.
@SpokespersonCHN
Many Americans like Chinese food, but polls show increasingly unfavorable American opinions toward China. This tweet shows how desperate BJ is to identify something that Taiwan and 🇨🇳 have in common. Econ interdependence hasn't promoted pol integration, & cuisine won't either.
The US...reaffirms that an armed attack in the Pacific, which includes the South China Sea, on Philippine armed forces, public vessels, or aircraft, incl CG, would invoke US mutual defense commitments under Article IV of the 1951 U.S. Philippines MDT.

This is a deliberate twisting of my words. I said that Beijing favors Ko Wen-je. Please listen to the recording of the session. I understand that CNA has reported accurately what I said. Ko is dishonest.
EU officials say PRC diplomats have removed talking points blaming NATO for the conflict in Ukraine & made clear that the use of nuclear weapons by Russia would be viewed as totally unacceptable in Beijing. Read

The readout of Xi Jinping's meeting with Blinken leaves me with one major concern: it is problematic that Xi said competition among major powers does not conform to the trend of the times. 1/3
China is going to move on Taiwan. China will stop exports to the US on which we depend. Many Americans will start dying almost instantly when medical supplies stop flowing.
This is terrifying and it's going to happen.
"The United States reaffirms an armed attack on Philippine public vessels, aircraft, and armed forces—including those of its Coast Guard in the South China Sea—would invoke U.S. mutual defense commitments under Article IV of the 1951 U.S. Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty."
Not smart of the PRC to issue this warning. It’s like waving a red flag in front of a bull. The US will fly, sail, and navigate wherever international law allows.
A joint demarche was issued jointly to the WHO by Geneva-based ambos of Canada, Australia, France, Germany, NZ, Britain, Japan and US in support of reinstating Taiwan's observer status.
Taiwan's 23 million people must be included in the

This is not correct. Chinese planes are NOT flying over Taiwan or in Taiwan's territorial airspace. They are flying in international air space, within Taiwan's declared air defense identification zone.
Is it any surprise that Chinese planes are flying over Taiwan? Or that North Korea is testing missiles again? Or that Iran is ramping up its nuclear program?
They all sense Biden’s weakness.

"People always talk about how China is a big market.. no, China is a huge economy with a small accessible market,” said Jörg Wuttke, pres of EU Chamber of Commerce in China. Overall, E.U. exports to China are only slightly larger than those to Switzerland.
China suspends imports of Taiwan mangoes due to alleged ‘harmful pest’. Another case of PRC arbitrary import bans. This action is aimed at influencing Taiwan’s election.

There is only one correct version of the one-China principle, which is spelt out in the Joint Communiqué on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People's Republic of China and the United States of America.
The Trump administration is considering a sweeping ban on travel to the United States by the 92 million members of the Chinese Communist Party and their families.
G7 FM Statement: We support Taiwan’s meaningful participation in WHO forums & the World Health Assembly. The international community should be able to benefit from the experience of all partners, including Taiwan’s successful contribution to the tackling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Taiwan's leading presidential candidate, Lai Ching-te, talks about tensions with China, ties with the US and the future of Taiwan’s chip industry in an interview with Bloomberg.
This is a deliberate distortion,
@HuXijin_GT
. The official US response was "The patrol remained in international waters and was not considered a threat."
Hou You-yi says he would scrap DPP's extension of Taiwan military service if elected president. This is aimed at winning votes. It will create a lot of friction with the US and send the wrong signal to the PRC.
It is regretful that the views expressed by me and my co-authors in Foreign Affairs are being taken out of context by some people in Taiwan. The main point of the article is that effective deterrence requires both credible threats and assurances. 1/x
Update: Taiwan is producing 20 million masks per day. The number of COVID-19 infections is steady at 440, with 7 deaths. The government and people of Taiwan should be proud of what they have accomplished so far. It's response holds lessons for all countries.

Taiwan is producing over 17 million masks per day and has begun exporting PPE to the United States and other countries.

U.S. to help Taiwan obtain NATO Link-22 radio system. "On a political level, if the U.S. agrees to help Taiwan upgrade to the Link-22 system, that also means the other NATO members have agreed to it."

The S.China Sea arbitration is an example of political manipulation of the intl rule of law of the sea. It has undermined the atmosphere for maritime peace and cooperation in the region, eroded the basic values of fairness and justice, should be a cause for alarm and be rejected…
Going forward, I hope that my public statements and writings will not be twisted to suggest that I support any particular candidate running for president in Taiwan.
The US, and many other countries, have their own "one China" policies. They do not accept China's "one China" principle. UN Res. 2758 didn't mention Taiwan nor bar its participation in the United Nations. Why does Beijing insist on distorting its meaning?
"China’s spokesman wasn't successful in convincing the rest of the world that the US Army brought the epidemic to Wuhan because the fabrication is so hard to believe. If it were brought by the US Army, why doesn’t DC have antidotes for infected Americans?"
UK will face consequences if it rules China is a hostile country - China's envoy Liu Xiaoming. . In other words, actions taken by other countries to defend their national interests will be punished by China.
Friends in Taiwan, please pay attention to how civilians can participate in a defense plan. China is watching and will draw lessons. You need to do so as well.

The Ukrainian government has distributed more than 10,000 automatic rifles to residents of Kyiv in the past few hours, The Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs said Thursday evening.

Taiwan’s president Tsai Ing-wen has convinced US Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy to meet in California instead of in Taipei in a bid to avoid an aggressive response from Beijing.
The fact that the Chinese declined to revive mil-mil channels is disappointing and worrisome. They apparently don’t buy into this framework at all. That begs the question, is it then possible to stabilize relations? 3/3

said she hopes that she is remembered as a leader who left her people more "united." "I hope they will remember me as someone who made the utmost effort to protect this place, to make this place more secure and more resilient."
The US-Taiwan tax deal would benefit both US & Taiwan companies. US-Taiwan agreements are signed by AIT.

: Please do not include in every article you write about US/Taiwan that steps being considered are "Risking Anger From China."
The PLA has conducted military exercises in the Taiwan Straits and at its northern and southern ends, showing PLA is capable of launching a full scale attack and capturing the island within hours, leaving US military no time to react. It’s a clear warning to Taiwan independence.
This reveals a serious lack of understanding of China's grand strategy and its diplomacy. I suggest
@matthewstoller
find something else to tweet about and leave this up to experts who have devoted their entire careers to analyzing China.
Xi Jinping's strategy for winning over world opinion is 'Wolf Warrior diplomacy,' which is having Chinese diplomats regularly insult and belittle their host countries whiling whining about how China's feelings are hurt. These aren't master strategists.
Taiwan and Canada are preparing to engage soon in their first round of discussions on a possible bilateral foreign investment promotion and protection agreement (FIPA).
I'm super excited to announce the release of our report "Toward a Stronger U.S.-Taiwan Relationship." This is the product of a year-long bipartisan task force. It includes lots of actionable policy recommendations for the next administration.
How is Taiwan Effectively Fighting Covid-19? . Taiwan is doing a good job so far in fighting Covid-19. No new cases for the past 3 days. What can be learned from Taiwan's experience? Watch my short video!
The Chinese told both the Canadian and American ships over radio systems, that they are entering Chinese territory, despite the joint mission taking place in internationally recognized waters,
(1) Chinese warship nearly hits U.S. destroyer in Taiwan Strait during joint Canada-U.S. mission - just as everybody was shaking hands at SLD. Bit of a spammer. Also, this is the same USN DDG that rushed to the rescue of USNS Impeccable in 2009.
A senior official from the Biden administration should give a comprehensive speech on US policy toward Taiwan. The confusion and misstatements are more likely to undermine deterrence than strengthen it.
Chinese leader blames Washington-led ‘containment, encirclement and suppression’ for severe challenges at home. This marks a turning point in Xi's policy, and a sign of further deterioration in US-China relations. via
@WSJ
No country should assume that Beijing is willing to use hotlines in a crisis. The US should stop pressing the PLA to establish more hotlines. We need to think creatively about other ways to ensure effective crisis management with China.
I just did an interview with BBC. The interviewer seemed disappointed that I don't expect a super tough Chinese reaction to Taiwan's elections and the US sending former senior officials. So far, BJ's response has been fairly muted. Econ, mil, dipl, pressure will continue. 1/2
“When the Ukraine war started, people in Taiwan were anxious, but now they’re inspired by Ukraine’s resistance.” Taiwan needs a territorial defense force.
