30k excess deaths in care homes, at least 20k due to Covid. 25k elderly people discharged from hospitals to care homes without tests & staff left without PPE. All this after a decade of cuts to social care. And Johnson blames care homes. Really, a new low.
I tell you what erodes trust in politics. Telling people you are pro immigration when you’re mayor of London then lying to people during EU Ref that Turkey is going to join EU not bcos you believe any of it but because you think it will help you become PM. Pathetic.
Extending Article 50 now would do nothing but erode trust in politics. We must leave as promised on March 29th. The Government should go back to Brussels, ditch the backstop and aim for a

Has anyone asked about care home deaths in press conference? These need to be reported alongside hospital deaths so we know the true scale of the problem, and can take action to protect over 400,000 elderly people living in residential care
A PM no one voted for, who wants a No Deal Brexit that’s never been on any ballot paper, blocking the very parliamentary sovereignty that Brexit was supposed to be about. Will of the people? Do me a favour.
Today, I wrote to
@MattHancock
urging him to publish daily figures of deaths outside hospitals, incl in care homes. This is essential to understanding the true scale of problem and ensuring all care workers get the PPE & tests we need to save lives

Furious Labour MPs shout: "Shameful. Totally corrupt! What have you done to this place?"
Seeing some of responses to Jess pulling out of leadership contest shows how much we need to change. We will never convince people who voted for other parties to support us next time when we are so vile to people within our own party who have the temerity to hold different views

Background to story on
@BBCr4today
- the data Leicester did not receive and why Ministers did not publish it. This really matters because what’s happening Leicester could be happening elsewhere.
Pillar 1 is tests in hospitals. This is published. Pillar 2 is tests from drive through centres and home testing kits done by commercial labs. This is not made public. Leicester was only given this data very late in the day. 2/3

We've moved on..and they should do the same...time to accept what kind of Labour Party the public want and it's not blairite neoliberalism..only a true socialist party can be a credible opposition..and a real change in No 10 that's what we all voted for in the GE and will again
Boris Johnson promised no one would have to sell their home to pay for their care. Now we know if you’re rich, you won’t see your life savings wiped out but if you’ve got low or modest savings, you will. It’s unfair and it’s wrong.Britain deserves better.
Owen is right to speak out about the threat Brexit poses to the peace process in Northern Ireland and to the U.K. economy. Well done for sticking to your principles & putting the national interest first.
Deaths in care homes should be reported alongside those in hospitals. The government needs to act fast to ensure all care staff get the protective equipment and testing they need to save lives
Once again Johnson gets it wrong. UK doesnot do more Covid tests than anywhere else in Europe. Denmark does almost twice as many per 1000 people. Plus UK figs include antibody tests, which other cos don’t, & based on when tests sent out, not results
#PMQS
As I said earlier...trying to pit parliament against the people is dangerous. That May sought to do so again this evening is deeply irresponsible and more in keeping with authoritarianism than a Parliamentary democracy
In today’s emergency debate on extending A50 I warned PM about her attacks on MPs. It is our job to scrutinise & question, to exercise our judgement, & stand up for what we believe in. Suggesting otherwise is dangerous for our parliamentary democracy.
Overwhelmed by all the messages today. I’m sorry I can’t reply to everyone but this has been a properly lovely day and I’ll remember it for a very long time. Thank you x
Whatever happens tonight, surely we need to extend or revoke A50 to give us time to sort out this chaos. Parliament cannot allow civil war in Tory party to push Britain headlong into no deal simply because the clock has run out.
Boris Johnson’s tax hike on working people won’t “fix the crisis in social care” or stop elderly people with low or modest savings from having to sell their homes to pay for care. But it will protect the homes of the wealthiest. My piece for

Carole. I’ve said before Parliament shouldn’t have gone into Easter recess, we should have continued to sit to question and scrutinise Govt. I’ve continued to ask Hancock questions as best I can in the meanwhile (see my timeline). So I’m trying to do my job. Thanks.

Labour’s plan will drive down NHS waits, overhaul JobCentres & get Britain working again
When I think of the transformation in NHS & early years services, and how much has been reversed under the Tories, I am beyond proud of what the last Labour Govt achieved. We championed social mobility AND social justice. And we always should.
Tony Blair: Jeremy Corbyn's comments that inequality & social mobility have been ignored for decades are the latest charge in what is now a mantra: that the Thatcher, Labour & current Govts are all the same.
This is bad politics & worse history. Time to set the record straight👇
Hancock repeatedly claimed he threw a “protective ring” around care homes during Covid but at the time I and many others argued nothing could have been further from the truth. Now we see he rejected the CMOs advice - how many lives could this have saved?
I was on
@thismorning
today talking about urgent need for families to start visiting their loved ones in care homes again. The Govt must change course, treat families as ‘key workers’ & make them a priority for testing & PPE. Let’s help bring all families back together again.
The Tories want to end National Insurance Contributions.
Your NICs record helps determine your entitlement to the state pension.
So if NICs are scrapped, how will people know what pension they’ll get?
A simple question that deserves a straight answer.
A truly terrible day when
@BoardofDeputies

Terrible news from
@ONS
that care workers are twice as likely to die from
#Covid_19
as general population. PM said last Weds that 29 care workers have died but reality is 131 have tragically lost their lives - and that’s only up to 20 April.
I have never known a nastier, more aggressive time politics. People have different views. Debate and argue with passion and respect, but do not bully or intimidate - and never bring children or families into it.
Evidence from other countries suggests up to half of coronavirus deaths happen in care homes. UK Govt should be publishing this data daily. Social care needs a much higher priority & focus. “Whatever it takes” must apply to social care too.

With almost 27,000 excess deaths in care homes since the start of the pandemic, at least 15,000 due to Covid-19,
& with rising infections in care, we urgently need a winter plan for social care. I’ve written to

You’re better off stacking shelves at Morrison’s than caring for older and disabled people, and that’s not good enough for our country.

has exposed the urgent need to reform staff pay, terms & conditions. My question in Parliament today....
Absolutely right from care charities: “Older people’s lives are not worth less. Care home staff are not second-class carers. The government must step in and make it clear that no one will be abandoned to this virus simply because of their age, condition or where they live.”

Awful stories of families separated from loved ones in care homes on
@BBCr4today
. A single family member should be designated as a key worker & made a priority for testing so we can safely start visiting again. With so many local lockdowns & winter coming this is even more urgent
I know families are desperate for children to be safely back home from university at Xmas and will welcome mass testing now underway. But what about the families who’ve been banned from seeing their loved ones in care homes for 8 months? Why aren’t they a priority for testing?
I don't want a hard/no deal Brexit precisely bcos it will hit poorest hardest. And just FYI..my school wasn't grammar when I was there, my dad left school at 16, my mum was a primary school teacher, and I'm v proud I got to Cambridge.
We do not need Dominic Cummings to tell us the Government’s rhetoric about putting a protective shield around care homes was “completely nonsense” - the evidence is there for all to see. My comments in today’s debate on dementia.
According to

a

The PM's "plans to transform the...skills system" is very welcome. But PMs have announced "radical reforms" to the skills system every other year for 3 decades. Success requires relentless focus on delivery. Does that play to this government's strengths?
