“On primary residences” is an important clarification - and much cheaper to implement Definitely not the complete abolition Kemi announced in her speech

The next Conservative government will abolish stamp duty on your home. Because Britain should be a country where people who wish to own their own home, can.

Abolishing stamp duty entirely would cost £15bn Badenoch seems to mean just stamp duty land tax, which brought in £11.6bn in most recent figures About half of her claimed £47bn in savings now committed to tax cuts

Labour source: "Kemi's ‘golden rule’ claims that for every pound saved half or more will go to reduce the deficit, and half will go on cutting taxes or spending to boost the economy. The £24.5 bn for scrapping stamp duty is half that. And they've pledged a ton of others policies"

First time buyers get Stamp Duty relief on first £300k and pay 5% up to £500k. Average cost of a first home in 2024 was £311,034. So abolishing it will save average FTB £551. Which is nice, but this is overwhelmingly a tax cut for those already on the property ladder

Official forecasts predict stamp duty will raise £24.5 billion for the government in 2029/30. No word from the Tories on how they would actually pay for that.

Not a bad conference speech by Kemi Badenoch. Like Keir Starmer last week, a not-disastrous conference should protect her from any imminent threat to her leadership. But next May's elections could still be fatal for both the Tory and Labour leaders
