Thrilled to announce what's next for me, but a little story first: I was hired at
@publicintegrity
to focus on our local initiative with
@ICT_Journalism
.
Timing is everything, they say, and it’s true — read on.
“We have informed they have 24 hours to move to another provider for violating our terms of service,” Dan C. Race, a GoDaddy spokesman, said in an email.

While you’re here, I’m also a journalist. I do data analysis to keep public agencies and officials accountable, and bring context to our news.
Please support me and my team, and the incredible in-depth coverage of St. Louis we provide:
Thank you!!
When women stand up for themselves, some people respond with even more vitriol.
Last night, a Post colleague publicly attacked me for calling out another colleague’s sexist tweet. He first hid any replies objecting to his attacks, and now seems to have deleted his account. 1/2
St. Lous, I keep making the same map, essentially.
The city's poorer neighborhoods are hit from all angles when looking at quality of life issues.
Let me show you what I mean in this thread.
Some personal news: At the end of October, I start work as a data reporter for the Center for Public Integrity. I’ve had a blast working in the newspaper industry, and particularly with the
@stltoday
team. I can’t wait to get started with
@publicintegrity
.
HEY. National press. Yeah, ABC, CNN, The Times, The Post, I'm talking to you.
Link back to us. Give us credit. Were you there on the ground, photographing the event in real-time? No, you were not. But
@stltoday
was.
Some of these outlets may have credited us already.
Today I found what I think is an error in Missouri education data 😶 but it's a dataset that is downloadable by the public, so I should be okay raising the issue...right? 🙃
@NickNehamas
@Blaskey_S
After stl city cops abused protesters three years ago, we ended up seeing some texts sent that night. Same kinds of language and attitude. Just horrifying to learn about, as just a resident.
@kattenbarge
@EllyArrow
I mean, I think what’s also important — and I see very little discussion of this anywhere — is talking about how porn is impacting everyone, and how on the whole, it’s not good for women. Most porn is misogynistic and abusive toward women — I am comfortable saying that
Everyone in STL, you can read the
@nytimes
piece about redlining, which I just got an alert for, if you want.
Or you can read about how it happens in your own community, from yours truly
@parksandrec
Hands down:
“If I seem too passionate, it's because I care. If I come on strong, it's because I feel strongly. And if I push too hard, it's because things aren't moving fast enough.” — Knope, The Debate
Tootsie Pops and Mike n Ike’s, sounds like solid quarantine prep for me. Thank you
@StephenAtHome
for having a show (remotely) and giving some kind of normalcy to my day 🙏
Important to keep as much of our routines as possible 👍
The city of St. Louis apparently can’t figure out how to tell us the gross pay of every (or any) city employee, so don’t let any of their other failures in transparency/Sunshine surprise you. It’s not right, but it’s not a surprise.
Still waiting, city of St. Louis.
Sunshine Law compliance is terribly broken in city of St. Louis. This is the 2nd or 3rd time the city has sent me similar delay for what is a very simple request for data that the city used to post online monthly. Reporters and others get similar delays on basic requests.
ICYMI,
@propublica
's been investigating TurboTax's 20-year fight to stop Americans from filing their taxes for free:
We also made a guide with info on how to file you taxes for free:
Free, fact-checked tax advice. That's all.
The one and only
@kirkman
is an absolute wizard and discovered a seriously privacy vulnerability on the state’s education dept website. He told them about it before we published.
And still, they referred to him as a “hacker”
I appreciate everyone’s kind words this week here at
#NICAR24
And now I hate to tell you that I’ve just been informed I am laid off from
@publicintegrity
Accepting hugs!
me, to another reporter: "hey, do you have a minute so I can ask you about something you wrote 8 years ago that you probably don't remember?"
reporter: "my kind of question."
@OHnewsroom
Housing Secretary Ben Carson wants to raise rents on public housing tenants because he thinks it'll push them to get out in the workforce. But Nina Tramble, a single mother of 3, already pushes 5-day, 40 hour workweeks to make ends meet

I don’t want to reverse it by putting it out in the universe, or anything, like I’m totally okay with it — but does anyone have a good explanation for why no cicadas in the city? I’m in S. City and have yet to see one IRL (again, this is FINE, I am just curious why!)
While you’re here support the work our great team does
The only reason I was out there today to get this clip was because I was on duty for
@stltoday
. Real press and real news does exist. We out here!
I took a mental health day, today, and I had to call my boss about something. He said "you're off" when he picked up, and I said I know, gotta ask you a thing. We talked for a couple min, and I said yeah, taking the day off was a good idea, even tho I have a lot to do. He said:
THE LEAD SINGER CAME DOWN ON THE FLOOR AND HE SANG “I WANT YOU TO BE HAPPIER” RIGHT TO MY FACE
@bastilledan
you made my entire year. You could sing me the dictionary and I would be happy
@bastille
...almost 40 percent of people involved in car accidents developed PTSD.
Symptoms: frequent, intrusive thoughts or dreams about the accident; fear of driving; feeling isolated even from close loved ones; insomnia—and intense guilt, whether the person was at fault or not.
If you can, go ahead and skip this incredible story by
@JoshuaWSharpe
...unless you want to experience some really intense feelings and reconsider the fragility of your entire existence.
I'm excited to share a new level of data transparency for the Post-Dispatch
@stltoday
For this story, you can see exactly where we got the data and how we analyzed it, via our GitHub page. I hope to continue doing this for as many stories as possible.
How about instead of focusing on how to change how you report numbers, to get STL out of "most dangerous city" lists, you discuss real solutions to actually get STL out of "most dangerous city" lists?
Don't tell me newspaper is irrelevant or dying. Just don't.
In the past three months, my newsroom got decimated by our corporate overlords. Our copy and design desks? Gone, as of this week. (1/)
This database had under 40 agencies in it last year.
This year, I decided, St. Louis deserves as much transparency as I can find time for.
Each agency, each database, requires a separate Sunshine Request. I made more than 100 of them this year
Friendly reminder that no matter what is going on — getting laid off, less than 6 hours of sleep the past few nights, being in a place with literally your entire professional family — you gotta take care of you, there’s only one of ✨ you
After the support I received last week, I think it’s best I be open about this, too:
I drove six hours round trip yesterday to say goodbye to my last remaining grandparent.
I am grieving many things in my life rn and your kind words & support make it easier. Please send love.
For anyone who saw me in the office today, I had a panic attack. It’s scary, I can’t predict it, and I’m doing my best not to be embarrassed.
I tried to eat when I came home, but couldn’t keep anything down.
@petrinkae
@byadamrhodes
Everyone’s covered everything, just about, and this is a great thread.
My only additions:
If recording, time stamp the quotes/important parts, in your notebook, so you’re not going insane later trying to find them
Get a callback number. Direct line/cell when possible. Always
An armed shooter is *looking right at* this photographer, and the photographer chooses to do what? His job. He shoots the photo. He chooses to stay put instead of running, which I think a lot of others would choose instead.
DMN staff photographer
@TomFoxPhoto
captured this image shortly before a gunman opened fire on the Earle Cabell Federal Building Monday morning in downtown Dallas. Fox was waiting to enter the building to cover a trial when the attack took place.
@gabydvj
@grace_panetta
I legitimately had this thought back then. Like “man shit is getting so crazy and indulgent and outrageous we got to be near end times” not sure if I was or am serious or not?
Some people ask me "Why do you always make it about race??" when I tell them what I'm working on.
And I say "Because, well, sometimes it IS about race"
When I told
@chrisprener
this anecdote, his response was simple:
"It's about race."
Today is my last day
@publicintegrity
.
I’ll have much more to say — in due time.
For now: stay tuned. I promise that announcement on what’s next is coming soon 😉
Update:
I’m up in my room charging my phone — bc all of you have been texting with offers to take me out or hook me up with a job or just listen
Some of them are so nice they make me start crying all over again 😭 I love this community so much
#NICAR24
Not to make this about me, but I'm gonna for a sec: What an incredibly cool moment to be in a newsroom when one of your own wins
@PulitzerPrizes
. Maybe now people will stop asking me why I moved from Florida "to St. Louis, of all places" — to work w/ this incredible team, duh!
This was the depressing database I talked about creating this week.
140 children killed from shootings, stabbings, beatings, other child abuse, suspicious circumstances or otherwise at the hands of another across the STL region
New upstairs tenant just wanted to meet me and introduce herself, so she asked our landlord for my phone number. My landlord gave it to her. 😬 Would anyone else feel hella weird about this?
@JakeAnbinder
Hi Jake. I think you might want to talk to someone in the journalism industry who got into it with 0 family connections or history in journalism, at all, before you start making threads like this. For a whole host of reasons, having a parent who was an editor is a huge help
I also don't think there should be a stigma. So:
I called the 1-800 suicide line for 1st time in my life, about 3-4 weeks into everything. I was panicking, hyperventilating. Cases/deaths were adding up. I began the "what ifs" in my head and concluded "why be here anymore?"
@Jeanniecat
Thanks. A lot of my close friends and family have known that I've been going to therapy since 2016, but I've decided to talk about it more matter-of-factly recently because I don't think there should be a stigma for proactively tending to your mental health.
My boss is leaving the
@stltoday
newsroom today (she took a buyout) and I gave a little speech and she gave a great going-away speech, and now a decent chunk of the newsroom has seen me cry so 👍👍 it's cool, we're family, right?
I get tired of "news releases" telling me things like:
"St. Louis is 7th for best drivers!" or
"Here are St. Louis' worst neighborhoods!"
So I wrote about them:
It’s always gonna be data with integrity, no matter what…
I’m home, I’m exhausted, I’m feeling loved, I’m feeling supported, and I’m honestly excited for what’s to come. (There’s so much more to come.)
Thank you,
@IRE_NICAR
— I left my heart at
#NICAR24
❤️
I’ve kept quiet about E\\\on’s Mike Brown/Ferguson tweets, in part bc I wasn’t here. But when I did get to STL, I read the whole DOJ report in its entirety. Only then did I have some kind of understanding.
Anyway, I assume E\\\on did not read all 86 pages. I encourage you to.
My best friend from the way back, Nicole Hester, took this photo of me years ago in downtown Champaign — before either of us ever stepped foot in a newsroom
Today, she was named a Pulitzer finalist for breaking news photography, and I am just bursting with pride to know you 💕
On a personal note: Well, I guess I'm never leaving St. Louis now, because the library has automatic renewal and no late fees. 🤷♀️🤷♀️ it's the little things
