What major liberal voices say does have power. @jonstewart saying "sex work is work" gives everyone warm fuzzy feelings cause they're "not judging" which is a whole lot easier then organizing to allocate support & resources to exploited people. Imagine he called for that instead.

@jonstewart I understand if people find this thread an overreaction. I'm this angry because I hear these jokes on US talkshows all the time and often from people who claim to care about the downtrodden and oppressed. People in #prostitution need real resources, not words and def not jokes.

Maybe Jon Stewart would like it if the US modeled itself after Germany and also funded public toilets where men can legally pay to rape women in street prostitution. Here's how that's working out in Berlin:

A man who pays a person in a truck stop restroom for a hand job (the scenario Jon Stewart finds so hilarious) knows what he's doing is exploitative and degrading. He may well revel in that. Very nice Jon that you're not "shaming" the exploited person. I'm sure that helps a ton.

Prostitution is highly precarious in the best of times but with itensified crises of the kind I mentioned prices plummet and men who use commercial sexual exploitation can demand ever more degrading and dangerous acts that risk illness, trauma end even death for the women.

When you call it "sex work" like Jon Stewart does you hide the immense power differential. The "seller" has no meaningful alternative. The "buyer" has all the choice in the world. Women need food, medicine, nappies, rent in order to survive. Men do not need on demand orgasms.

There isn't a disaster which predatory men won't use to sexually exploit women, children and young men. Natural disasters, pandemics, wars, economic crises and deteriorating social safety nets. Rather than sharing what the demonstrably have in excess they rape those in need.
