Why hello there, men in my inbox, helpfully pointing out that the United States has in fact had a female Treasurer. It has! But it has not had a female Treasury Secretary, which is an entirely different position.
Trump tells the crowd he's doing his NBC town hall tonight. He says NBC is "the worst" and repeatedly insults them and host Savannah Guthrie. "I figured, what the hell, we get a free hour on television," Trump says.
In a somewhat odd moment at tonight's AFT town hall, Biden tells a 10-year-old girl, “I’ll bet you’re as bright as you are good-looking." He takes her over to the assembled reporters, then stands behind her and puts his hands on her shoulders while he's talking.
Wow. CNN says it reached out to 50 GOP lawmakers this morning; 49 declined to appear on air to discuss the El Paso and Dayton shootings. Only Rep. Ted Yoho (R-Fla.), who’s on now, said yes. Yesterday, Jake Tapper similarly highlighted GOPers who declined to appear on

Hi all. I’ve been told by my editors that the Post is rescinding its ban.
This is good news, but it’s unfortunate that it had to come at such a high emotional toll, and after my distress was dismissed for years.
I’m taking time to rest and process. Thank you for your support.
At today's WH and State Dept press briefings, reporters pressed for evidence to back up U.S. gov't statements about recent events in Syria and Russia, respectively. In response, officials suggested those reporters might be more inclined to believe ISIS/the Kremlin. Yikes. 1/x
It's the job of reporters to ask for proof to back up government statements. Doing so does not mean one believes propaganda put out by U.S. adversaries. I imagine these officials know that. Are they simply throwing out these accusations in an effort to deter further Qs? 6/6
Q: "Did you advocate to President Trump to impose martial law as a way to remain in power?"
Greene: "I don't recall."
Q: "So you're not denying you did it? You just don't remember."
Greene: "I don't remember."
“Special thanks to Representative Omar of Minnesota. Oh, I forgot. She doesn’t like Israel. I forgot. I’m so sorry." Trump to RJC crowd, singling out Omar one day after a man was arrested for threatening to kill her and calling her a "terrorist."
Interestingly, in China people have expressed similar pride in the self-sacrifice they’ve undertaken during the coronavirus pandemic — but that sacrifice was to self-quarantine for weeks, not to return to business as usual.
I am in awe of
@Yamiche
’s professionalism, poise and determination in the face of the president’s efforts to intimidate her and dodge her questions about his own words.
I believe that Washington Post readers and employees, including myself, deserve to hear directly from

on the newspaper’s handling of this matter. My statement on The Post’s decision tonight:
Romney could not be a more fitting speaker for this moment. He references his own presidential loss in 2012. He notes losing is no fun, but senators must tell voters the truth. Gets sustained applause from many in the chamber.
Giuliani, who accused Twitter of letting someone "invade" his tweet when he made a typo, casts himself as a tech expert on Fox today. In discussing deleted Strzok-Page texts, Giuliani says texts are "not like emails. I do this work, cybersecurity work, and texts are hard to get."
Sen. John Cornyn: "China is to blame because the culture where people eat bats & snakes & dogs & things like that, these viruses are transmitted from the animal to the people and that's why China has been the source of a lot of these viruses like SARS, like MERS, the Swine Flu."
When women stand up for themselves, some people respond with even more vitriol.
Last night, a Post colleague publicly attacked me for calling out another colleague’s sexist tweet. He first hid any replies objecting to his attacks, and now seems to have deleted his account. 1/2
A reporter notes to Fauci that he has "joked a couple of times today" about how different it feels doing his job in the new administration as compared to the previous one.
"You said I was joking about it; I was very serious about it," Fauci replies. "I wasn't joking!"
“The most interesting and the most distressing thing about American news coverage right now is that we don't treat the end of democracy in America as the story. That is the story."
“No victim is perfect. No victim should have to be. After all, if a man cannot be considered abusive towards an imperfect woman, then just how perfect does a woman need to be before it becomes wrong to beat her?”

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) was just on Fox saying he agrees with Trump. He cast it as an opportunity for seniors to sacrifice in order to keep the country intact for their grandchildren. “Let's get back to living... And those of us that are 70+, we'll take care of ourselves.”
Schumer notes that he's the first New York-born majority leader, the “son of an exterminator and a housewife, descended from victims of the Holocaust.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.), on Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) confronting him and Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.): "She starts screaming at Liz, and Liz just said -- well, ask Liz. I can't remember exactly what she said. But they got into a back-and-forth about Jewish space lasers."
Fox host Chris Wallace tells Romney that his action means "this is war." Wallace: "Donald Trump will never forgive you for this." Romney replies by quoting from a hymn: “Do what is right. Let the consequence follow.”
The reporter did not back down:
"But I mean, the U.S. has not always been straightforward about what happens with civilians," she said. "And I mean, that is a fact." 3/x
Emily Yoffe has a history of unethical professional behavior, and her actions have caused significant harm. I am sad angry to see that has done so once again. You should not have had to go through this,

I have reinstalled Twitter to respond to this story and make sure my voice is fully heard. I am Casey.
My real name is Alex but my mom decided it would be best to hide it for anonymity. But this is my story, not hers. This is not the free press’s story.
Judging from my mentions tonight, people have Feelings about Emily’s List saying it will no longer endorse Sinema….
… but I wasn’t expecting all the tweets from people who seem to have mistaken Emily’s List for Angie’s List.
Aboard AF1, a reporter asked WH press secretary Jen Psaki for evidence to back up the claim that Qurayshi denotated a suicide bomb.
Psaki asked whether skeptics think the U.S. military is "not providing accurate information and ISIS is providing accurate information." 2/x
"The fact is, the president of the United States committed an act of incitement of insurrection. I don't think it's very unifying to say, 'Oh, let's just forget it and move on.' That's not how you unify," Pelosi says.

The House is voting now on the CROWN Act, which would ban discrimination against Black people based on how they choose to wear their hair. In announcing her colleague's "no" vote via proxy just now, Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) called it "the bad hair bill."
This is a photo of international airline counters for carriers, including Austrian and Lufthansa. Germany and Austria currently have tight restrictions on U.S. travelers, for instance, so it’s not clear how any governor’s political party or state regulations would affect that.
Asked by Jeanine Pirro last night about Yovanovitch's testimony, President Trump said, “I don't know what she said because the Democrats keep that very much under the vest.”
A 10-page PDF of Yovanovitch's prepared remarks is available here:
Asked about Kellyanne Conway's comments about her, Pelosi responds: “I’m not going to talk about her. I responded as the Speaker of the House to the president of the United States.”
Price responded: "If you doubt the credibility of the U.S. government, of the British government, of other governments and want to, you know, find solace in information that the Russians are putting out, that is for you to do." 5/x
Wish the same Post editor who is quoted in this piece supported me when I was doxxed and had to leave my home. Instead, they were silent, and I was suspended. They continue to prevent me from fully doing my job, by barring me from covering sexual assault—an action so harmful 1/2
I wrote about online harassment of female journalists, and how news organizations are grappling with the increasingly vicious situation. Thanks to everyone who spoke to me for this piece

This piece is a sparkling example of how *not* to write about sexual misconduct allegations.
It leaves out a host of key facts and context, including the full scope of the public allegations and Díaz’s own contradictory statements on the matter. 1/x
I want to be clear: The Washington Post is MY workplace. I want it to be a workplace where survivors of sexual assault are safe, supported and respected. How can it be when a senior editor says a columnist who highlighted assault allegations is “full of shit”? 1/x

column contains facts about sexual assault allegations against Ben Roethlisberger that the Washington Post’s own story backs up.
Trump claims the "red light just went off" on a CNN camera at his rally. CNN's Anderson Cooper has been discussing Marie Yovanovitch's testimony and was not airing the rally when Trump said this.
When you speak out your experience of sexual assault, weird things start to happen — some are good, some are not so good. Here’s a story of a not-so-good one involving the actions of a prominent writer whose work I have admired, Caitlin Flanagan (

The reality is some Capitol Police officers allowed the rioters to enter and gave them directions to leaders’ offices, while others — like those in the horrifying video in this thread — tried to stop the mob and suffered grave consequences in the line of duty.
Trump Jr.'s partner, Kimberly Guilfoyle, is also on "The View." Asked whether she advised him against outing the alleged whistleblower, Guilfoyle says she was in the bathroom and only realized it afterward: "I left you alone for 10 minutes; what happens when mamacita's gone?"
Quite a moment last night as Jimmy Kimmel asked Kanye West why he thinks Trump cares about black people. Kanye responded with a few seconds of silence. "Why don't we take a break," Kimmel said. They never returned to the topic. via

On House floor, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) denounces the "cancel culture mob" and, oddly, metal detectors. (No mention of, um, the actual mob that stormed the Capitol last week.)
Objecting to sexism is not clout chasing.” It’s not “harassment.” And it’s certainly not “cruelty.”
Does the Washington Post agree?

Here is a personal thread I wrote last night about why speaking out matters to me and other women. 2/2
@jdelreal
Let me give you another example of why publicly objecting to sexism matters. In Jan. 2018, a woman came forward with allegations of sexual misconduct against a journalist in Beijing. Soon, screenshots circulated in which members of a mostly male soccer club denigrated her online.
On Brian Kilmeade's radio show, Trump is disputing that he went down to the bunker for his own safety. He claims the Secret Service said it would be a good time to go down and just take a look at the bunker, because "maybe sometime you're going to need it."
At event in Kentucky today, McConnell also said: “If any of you have been around me since May the 1st, I’ve said, ‘Wear your mask. Practice social distancing.’ ... Now, you’ve heard of other places that have had a different view, and they are, you know, paying the price for it.”
In conclusion: Speaking out matters. Trust yourself. Don't let others try to gaslight, bully or scare you, and don't take criticism from someone you wouldn't go to for advice. I probably won't be going to Ms. Flanagan for advice anytime soon. 24/24
On "Meet the Press," Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) says the whistleblower's sources "exposed things that didn't need to be exposed."
"This would have been far better off if we would have just taken care of this behind the scenes," Johnson says.
“Let me be clear, House Democrats are down with NDP -- Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi,” Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) says, in what is perhaps the first nod to a Naughty by Nature song in a nominating speech for House speaker.
Trump says he called Chinese President Xi Jinping "king." Xi responded that he's president, not king, per Trump. "I say, 'No, you're president for life, so therefore, you're king.'" He says Xi eventually said that he liked that.
A reporter just now asks about the map Trump showed in the Oval Office today, which looked like the president may have used a Sharpie to draw a circle to intersect Alabama.
Trump ... doesn't say no.
"I don't know. I don't know. I don't know," he says.
Newt Gingrich currently on Fox continuing to peddle conspiracy theories about the election being "stolen." When asked by host Jedediah Bila for evidence, Gingrich claims there is no evidence because local election officials have not granted access to observers. This is false.
My colleague
@TaylorLorenz
is not only a stellar journalist but also 1) is doing amazing work while facing an unprecedented, coordinated campaign of online abuse, and 2) is bravely speaking out about it to help others. I’d love to see
@washingtonpost
leaders publicly support her.
CNN's Jake Tapper gets particularly blunt in interview with Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R), noting that top GOP leaders still haven't congratulated Biden.
“Your party’s leaders are acting like babies.”
“The last time the president was physically at a task force meeting was several months ago," Fauci says on CNN when asked about the last time Trump attended a coronavirus task force meeting.
Pence usually attends and “translates" the contents to Trump, he said.
I hope Washington Post newsroom leaders will not only prioritize their employees’ safety in the face of threats of physical harm but also ensure that no journalist will be punished for speaking the truth.
In the interview, Fauci was talking about the work and long nights he and others in the administration were putting in amid the pandemic. He made no mention of Trump. But the Trump campaign ad makes it seem as though he's praising the president's personal leadership.
As all eyes are on the Capitol today, on the other side of the National Mall is a new reminder of the pandemic’s toll on the U.S.: An art exhibition by Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, through Oct. 3. Visitors are lining up at a booth to write remembrances to loved ones on flags.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) appeared on "Face the Nation" this a.m. from Hong Kong, dressed in black. "I think it is very much in the United States' interest to support the people of Hong Kong," he said. "I'm here, I'm dressed in all black standing in solidarity with the protesters."
New Biden statement:
"Last night, Vice President Mike Pence stood before America and with a straight face said, 'You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America.'"
"His proof? The violence you’re seeing in Donald Trump’s America."
"Conversations in a locker room" are different from reported allegations of abuse, Rep. Jim Jordan tells

Trump’s remark to reporters earlier this month — that HK is a part of China and that Beijing doesn’t need advice — is now being used in Chinese propaganda videos. Awkward.
In April 2014 speech to the Yale Law School Federalist Society banquet, Kavanaugh reminisced about partying (‘what happens on the bus stays on the bus’) & related a story about a friend drunkenly falling, breaking a table & being given more beers by a professor.
We’re happy to hear that Felicia Sonmez has been reinstated. Her ordeal shows why due process is so important for newsroom employees facing discipline, and why our union is fighting so hard to include strong just-cause language in our contract.
Tell Jennifer Williams, whoever that is, to read BOTH transcripts of the presidential calls, & see the just released ststement from Ukraine. Then she should meet with the other Never Trumpers, who I don’t know & mostly never even heard of, & work out a better presidential attack!
“Your endorsement means a great deal to me," Biden tells Sanders. “You’ve refused to accept that we can’t change what’s wrong in our nation. … And you don’t get enough credit, Bernie."
I stand by what I wrote in that email. In 2018, I was punished after I told my editors I needed to take a walk around the block after reading a difficult story.
Other colleagues have been punished for their trauma far more recently, but their stories aren’t mine to tell. 1/
Per source at WaPo, this email in late-May (far before the recent incident with Weigel) was the moment that Sonmez lost support among many of her colleagues at the paper.
Per a Hill aide familiar with the talks, Schumer asked Trump at WH today why he wouldn't reopen the government and stop hurting people.
Trump's response: "Because then you won't give me what I want."
