This is at once true and useful, and also what is wrong with science in the 21st century. Being a good scientist is about understanding a field well, thinking of unique hypothesis, and performing experiments carefully to address them. Being a *successful* scientist OTOH ...
I am often asked what the one skill is that young scientists should work on the most. My answer: your storytelling via presentations. The better you present, the more your ideas travel, the more doors open, and the more people want to work with you. A few tips: Have one clear

One in three Australian universities has a consultant or ex-consultant on its governing body. Advisers are the governors. Why does the ALP still let consultancies rule-and milk-our universities? Journalists, please, start asking harder questions. Read:

Genevieve Bell's resignation is a direct result of the catastrophic failure of governance in our universities. It was clear, as the inaugural chair of the Senate Inquiry into University Governance, that these issues ran deep, but the responsibility doesn’t stop with her.

When people resort to incredibly long and indirect posts like this, you know they’re grasping.
Cutting Migration Won’t Turn BMWs Into Hyundais… The so-called “supply and demand” argument is a comforting myth rolled out whenever the housing crisis comes up, recently paired with the claim that cutting migration will somehow fix it. But the logic falls apart the moment you

It's now on record Labor is spending more on consultants than Morrison. Is this the same party boasting about its savings on consultants & commitment to cultural change? Data shows Labor spent nearly $1 billion on contracts in 24-25 & already $76.5 mil in 25-26. 🧵

That's right: Both our major parties are committed to making housing less and less affordable. It's baked into every policy they've had for the last 2-3 decades.

Many seem to be missing the point that to take out a huge loan with a 5% deposit to by a house multiple times household income can only satisfy any reasonable risk-benefit analysis if house prices are guaranteed to keep going up. In which case they cannot become more affordable.
Housing Many people seem to be missing the point that if home ownership rates are to rise, especially for younger folk, they need to bid to buy the dwelling - ie, 'push up prices'. They need the financial ability to do that. And don't ignore supply/demand dynamics playing out

IADS-E Sounds? Have any of my psychology/cognitive/emotion researcher friends had recent experience in getting access to the IADS-E sound dataset? I've filled out the online request form, but no response and it's been a while. Would appreciate any help!

Stupidity repeats..."Window tax was a property tax based on the number of windows in a house...in England, Scotland, France & Ireland during the 18th & 19th centuries. To avoid the tax, some houses from the period...bricked-up window-spaces." https://t.co/agDisl1vaX
What are they going to do, have bedroom inspectors come around? How many people per bed do they want? https://t.co/miNmy2KQvU

Just days after more shocking revelations at the Senate inquiry into uni governance, UTS consultants tell staff facing devastating cuts to “wash delicates” for stress relief while 146 courses are slashed. Disgraceful. We need urgent governance reform

Lots of people in my comments are saying that renewable energy is cheaper. Why then have our electricity prices done this since we started installing it? Thanks to Mark Gell for the graphic.

It’s an interesting thought experiment: if cars had never been invented and bicycles rules the roads, what would the road rules look like? Which current road rules would be less strict, and which wouldn’t exist at all?
An awful lot of people want you to think that a person riding a bicycle should be held to the same road rules as a person operating a motor vehicle. 🤦♂️

Can someone please tell Lisa O’Carroll that countries don’t pay export taxes imposed by Trump. US importers pay the taxes. This is basic stuff. “Dozens more countries face higher taxes on exports to US as new Trump tariffs come into effect”

Ruling politicians should decide what political protests are permitted. Yeah, good one Tony.
It should not be for judges to decide when a political protest is justified. The decision to close the Sydney Harbour Bridge to facilitate this protest is a political decision and should be made by elected and accountable ministers - who as it happens, think the march should not

Don't you think it would be appropriate in your official advice that you link to here, to mention the 8.7 magnitude quake? Right now, you're still only mentioning the 6.8 magnitude quake, which makes your advice seem completely inconsistent with other official sources.
No #tsunami threat to Australia from magnitude 6.8 #earthquake near OFF EAST COAST OF KAMCHATKA. A magnitude 8.7 earthquake also occured at 09:24am AEST which was assessed as No #tsunami threat to Australia. Latest advice at https://t.co/Tynv3ZQpEq.
