With the death of Shinzo Abe in an act of shocking violence, Australia has lost a great friend and Japan has lost its most significant post-war leader.
Under Abe, Japan assumed its rightful place as the leading democracy of the western Pacific.
Britain has nothing to lose except the shackles that the EU imposes on it. After the courage shown by its citizens in the referendum, it would be a tragedy if political leaders go wobbly now.
Proud to have agreed a historic 🇬🇧-🇯🇵 trade deal with
@moteging
.
This is a great deal for Britain, going beyond EU-Japan in key areas like digital & data, financial services and food & drink.
A British-shaped deal that delivers for the whole country.👇
Under Shinzo Abe, Japan spoke with strength and consistency. He hasn’t just been the longest serving Japanese prime minister, he has been one of the very best. The free trade deal epitomised his commitment to liberal values as well as his regard for Australia.
There are 364 other days a year for the Greens to be politically correct. Why can’t they just accept that Jan 26 is the best available day to celebrate all that’s good about life in Australia.
Interesting to see a prime example of climate hypocrisy: a climate action billboard being towed by one of the most emitting vehicles on the road!

Leading this wonderful country is the greatest honour and the heaviest responsibility anyone can have. I am forever grateful to the Australian people for having the opportunity to serve and still believe now, as I said in 2013, that there is no limit to what Australia can achieve
In a country with “no hierarchy of descent” and “no privilege of origin” – to use Bob Hawke’s immortal words from our Bicentennial – it’s simply wrong to give just some of us a special say over how our government works based on ancestry.
I’m very honoured to receive this award. I could not have done anything in life without the members and supporters of the Liberal Party and it’s them I want to recognise and thank today, and the broader Australian people (1/2)
Congratulations to
@BorisJohnson
on becoming prime minister at a critical time in Britain’s history. He has the courage and the passion to keep Britain great.
An honour, but more so a duty to visit Taiwan and meet with
@iingwen
this week. Taiwan’s friends are so important right now.

Congratulations to
@trussliz
on winning the world's second most important job. Global Britain has such an important role to play in reasserting prosperity and peace at this difficult time.
Christmas is a time for counting our blessings and a time for giving. It’s a time for rest & reflection but also a time for looking forward. It’s a time for resolving to be everything we can and should be.
So from me & Margie, to you & yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas.
A big thank you to all who attended Richard Abbott’s funeral mass this morning. I have met smarter, richer and more successful people but never a better man than my dad. It was a fine celebration of a wonderful life.
People smugglers and their customers are the only winners from Labor’s weakening of our border protection policies because ample medical treatment offshore and onshore was already available. Under Labor, it’s get on a boat, get to Nauru, get sick and get to Australia
Had an excellent interaction with my friend,
@HonTonyAbbott
. Great to see his passion and energy on issues he believes in. He is a strong votary for deepening India-Australia cooperation.
People on unemployment benefits are supposed to be looking for work. Applying for one job a day is hardly unreasonable. These proposed changes show Labor is now the welfare class party not the working class one.
Good move by
@ScottMorrisonMP
to help firies who've already been in the field for weeks this summer. Gives support in a rare season but doesn't hurt the volunteer ethos.
Britain’s future has always been global, rather than just with Europe. Like so many of Britain’s admirers, I want to see this great country seize this chance and make the most of it.
"This is a really extraordinary result. This is a stupendous result. It is a great result for Scott Morrison and the rest of the wider Liberal team. And Scott Morrison will quite rightly live in the Liberal pantheon forever." (1/16)
"In the heat of contest, attention focuses on the immediate Yes v No issues. But Australians should also ask how this doomed proposition got to the starting line, and even more so why it should not be allowed to get to the finishing line."
Rugby Australia is the latest sports body to succumb to moral blackmail and come out for the Voice. This is totally different from 1967 or ending White Australia. It's entrenching race into our constitution and changing our system of government.
Rugby Australia is the latest major sporting code to back the Indigenous voice to parliament, joining a growing list of elite sports pushing for a yes vote in this year’s referendum.
It’s a great privilege to be asked to serve on the board of the
@AWMemorial
. I look forward to working with the Director, board members and staff of this wonderful institution to ensure that the service and sacrifice of our armed forces are properly appreciated and honoured.
Met today with Taiwan's Economic Office Director-General in Sydney to express my solidarity with Taiwan in the face of Chinese government belligerence. Democracies should stand together in these challenging times.
With amongst the world’s largest uranium reserves, it’s baffling that Australia is lagging internationally on nuclear energy. Ben Fordham and Ontario's Energy Minister highlight the flaws in Chris Bowen's recent comments on the cost of nuclear power.
Chris Bowen has been ‘fact checked’.
He claims nuclear energy is expensive.
But the Energy Minister for Ontario has set the record straight.

Probably the single best thing that’s happened for Indigenous people – over the last decade or so – is the very big increase in the numbers of Indigenous people in the parliament. They represent all of us not just some of us.
I’m very honoured to have my portrait join those in Parliament House and very grateful to everyone who made this journey possible: family, staff and colleagues because everything worthwhile is a team effort.
Emissions targets that made sense three years ago when all countries were supposed to be in Paris and we didn’t need policy change and wouldn’t face economic dislocation do not make sense now.
@TurnbullMalcolm
take note.
I join
@AlboMP
, together with all Australians, in thanking QE for her 70 years on the throne. The Monarchy has been a great source of unity and stability.
Even this crisis eventually will end; because there’s a vaccine, or because the virus loses its virulence — and our challenge between now and then will be to avoid letting this needlessly weaken us — and if possible, to emerge stronger for the test.
Zali claims to be a “moderate”. What a joke! On her own admission, she’s never voted Liberal in her life at a federal election and thinks that Labor’s climate change policies don’t go far enough. Vote Steggall, get Shorten!
What a load of rubbish being peddled by right wing activists. I must be doing something right. Same old fear and smear. It is time for moderates like me to speak up for sensible long term policies. Let’s bring integrity back to politics.

When circumstances change, sensible people change their opinion. What seemed reasonable when there were little or no economic costs, is utterly unreasonable now. It's time to get out of Paris.
If we think anyone is really down in the dumps – our friend, our neighbour, our family member – our obligation is not to be embarrassed into silence but to say “look, how I can help?”
Bill Shorten has surrendered to the left on border protection. We all know that parties of the centre-left are becoming more left and less centre. So Shorten has put party unity ahead of border security.
The British people have voted to end the indecision and to get Brexit done. Congratulations to
@BorisJohnson
and the
@Conservatives
for putting forward a clear and self confident agenda.
I'm very disappointed that
@cporterwa
is retiring, after being effectively hounded from the ministry on the basis of decades-old and unprovable allegations. It's sad and wrong that a capable person's contribution can be curtailed in this way.
He was the father of the Quad, a friend to Taiwan, and a staunch defender of liberal values.
He concluded the more recent FTA, as well as adding a key strategic dimension to our already intimate partnership.
The recent omission of large-scale nuclear from the CSIRO's energy costings report not only undermines our nation's ability to affordably reduce our emissions but further justifies the public's declining trust in government institutions.
I was the beneficiary of many acts of friendship including the attempted submarine partnership which would have eliminated any capability gap prior to our going nuclear.
This is a dreadful loss for Japan, for Australia and for a world where democracies stand strong and together
It’s amazing the things you see and learn when you’re door knocking. The Tango Avenue street library is a testament to the strong community we have throughout Warringah. 📚
Australia Day is a time to reflect with pride on our achievements as a nation. We may not be perfect but there is no better country anywhere on earth and to be an Australian is to have won the lottery of life.
On this point Miranda Devine always gets it wrong. The Abbott Govt did NOT introduce "Safe Schools". It was inherited from the Gillard Govt. I would never knowingly put in place a gender manipulation programme pretending to be about anti-bullying
If you want to stop the Retiree Tax, if you want to stop increases in capital gains taxes, if you want to maintain investment in property development & generally the opportunity to invest the proceeds of your hard work, Tony Abbott is the person you should support"- John Howard
This is a shocking act of violence against one of the world's leading democratic statesmen and we all have to hope and pray that he somehow pulls through.
Australia has never had a better friend in Japan than Shinzo Abe, which is why we are so numbed by this appalling act.
Big business reps are wrong about very high immigration numbers. High immigration adds to housing demand which boosts price. And it adds to labour supply which dampens wages. Big business is talking self interest here; not the national interest.
It was a thrill to receive Japan’s Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun - which I regard as something for our country rather than just for me; as a tribute to the “special relationship” between our two countries that’s been nurtured by many prime ministers over the years.
I’m not going to release my own comments to the party room, because they were along the lines of my remarks to media on the way into the parliament, but the rampant hostile briefing of journalists while the meeting was underway does require a response.
As I said on
@2GB873
earlier today, what the Greens have done to Jim Molan is absolutely contemptible. If anyone should apologise, it’s the Greens + Bill Shorten for joining in on this smear. All too often he and the Greens are on the same page.
Honoured to cast my vote this morning in such an important election for our community. At the polls today, cast your vote for a strong economy & a secure future. The Liberal Party is delivering for Warringah & I look forward to continuing that great work.
