We're not prepared for Baby Boomers aging.
🚨 Up to 40 million 80 year-olds are going to be driving everywhere b/c that's the only option.
Missing middle housing, transit options, traffic safety -- these are massive Boomer issues whether or not they realize it.
What I learned from traffic safety PSAs:
She wore bright clothing, carried a conspicuous umbrella, and made eye contact with the driver. Everything's fine here.
K-8 students who live within ONE MILE:
in 1969, 89% walked or biked to school.
in 2009, 13% walked or biked to school.
That suggests parenting culture plays a much larger role than car culture. Or parenting culture IS car culture.
The point of these signs is to show the legal passing distance. There's a disturbing urge by Americans to watch this thinking they're supposed to cheer for the bus driver.
The US is going to have 30-40 million 80 yr olds driving because the built environment is car dependent.
Baby Boomers are a huge reason for local govs to legalize walk-friendly, bike-friendly, transit-friendly neighborhoods.
(psst, abolish zoning)
"We've got to get the coffee shops, the barber shops, the law firms back into residential neighborhoods"
At the risk of liking a politician, watch this.
The odds of your child getting kidnapped are about 1 in a million.
The odds of a person born in 2021 dying in a traffic crash are about 1 in a hundred.
American parents act like these stats are reversed. Paranoid about the rare kidnapping when the common drive is deadly.
Most places outlaw parking right up at a stop sign or stop light. So you might as well take advantage of those laws by installing bumpouts. Makes it much easier to see around corners ("daylighting").
A city spent $11.5 million on a streetscape project and within 4 years, they generated $273 million in economic output.
Downtown smiles are increasing at an exponential scale.
HOW TO RECOGNIZE CAR BRAIN
Boston put up Jersey barriers to protect cyclists in a bike lane.
Drivers kept bonking into Jersey barriers.
Drivers complained it's not safe to bonk into Jersey barriers.
Boston is removing Jersey barriers so drivers can bonk softer things.
It's really really hard for Americans to be intellectually curious about helmet-free bicycling cultures. It's easier to just insist on believing helmets should be a top priority.
Speed kills. So how do you keep cars from speeding?
- fewer lanes
- narrow lanes
- wide sidewalks
- buildings close to street
- tight intersection corners
- street furniture
- roundabouts
- bumpouts
A person has never seen an avocado. You hand it to them expecting them to visualize guac dip. Not gonna happen.
You send out community surveys asking residents to give advice about transportation networks. They have no idea what's possible.
People get uncomfortable when driving over a pedestrian is called a crime.
"You have to prove intent! You don't know their intent!"
If a person is texting while driving and kills another person, the driver's action is negligent.
Negligent homicide is a criminal charge.
"As a police officer, I don't like it."
"As a drunk driver, I don't like it."
"As a traffic signal sales rep, I don't like it."
It is a roundabout.
Here's a little 🧵
How to explain car-oriented transportation planning:
“Welcome to the restaurant. Let me tell you about our menu. Pizza is all-you-can-eat, and it’s free. Everything else costs $50 each, is a tiny portion, and takes 8 hours to prepare. So, what can I get you?”
@Boenau
Many cyclists unfortunately do not know how to fit into the traffic picture, thus risking their lives. Cyclists should be trained, licenced and insured before being allowed on roads with a speed limit above 30 mph.
3500-lb Car vs Pedestrian:
"Sadly, there's nothing we can do to improve safety. We offer our thoughts and prayers."
35-lb Scooter vs Pedestrian:
"We're banning scooters so this never happens again."
"Travel lanes must be 12 feet wide because firetrucks need to be able to hurry to an emergency."
"Are drivers required to get out of the way of firetrucks?"
"Well yeah, but--"
"Do any other developed countries in the world use firetrucks this size?"
"Well no, but--"
The sign says 35, the design says floor it.
Civil engineers should be required to learn about human factors & psychology before they're allowed to design a road.
Pedestrians and cyclists are not the people who need lectures about how to behave in public. The antisocial behavior that causes so much destruction comes from people operating motor vehicles.
Everyone knows this is true even if not everyone admits it.
Sure, road diets make a neighborhood more pleasant, but forget the fluffy stuff for a sec.
👉Road diets reduce crashes. 👈
Every driver hates sitting in traffic waiting for a crash to be cleared. So for the motorist's sake, start your road diet today.
"The lanes have been popular with parents of young cyclists — but criticized by sport cyclists"
(They buried the lede)
With respect to my friends the sport cyclists, stop asking the sport cyclists how to design bike lanes.
"Travel lanes must be 12 ft wide because firetrucks need to be able to speed."
"Are drivers required to get out of the way of firetrucks?"
"Yeah, but--"
"Do any other developed countries in the world use firetrucks this size?"
"No, but--"
The standard excuses:
"Roundabouts don't work with high volumes."
"Roundabouts don't work with low volumes."
"Roundabouts don't work in the suburbs."
"Roundabouts don't work in the cities."
"Roundabouts don't work because we're too dumb."
"Roundabouts don't work because…
Ambiguous pedestrian crossing signs are a hazard. Stop signs or red lights should be used to make the spots for pedestrian crossings, but no one gets hurt in this video anyway.
Lancaster, CA transformed its downtown in just 8 months by redesigning it's main street from a mini-highway to a tree-lined boulevard.
For the cost of just $11.5M, the project has generated $273M in economic output since 2010, creating 800 jobs, and nearly doubling tax revenue!
Lance, I have wonderful news. You don't need to give up on older people by trapping them in a life of car dependency.
Walking & riding bikes keeps a senior's heart, lungs, and brain healthy and their muscles strong.
"But I've been blocking sidewalks for 10 years" is one guy's defense. The city is now giving out $100 tickets.
Residents are 2-3 tickets from "I never would've bought this house if I knew I couldn't park on the sidewalk."
When streets are engineered for safety, some drivers will inevitably say "I don't like how slow this street is" and you need to be willing to say "I don't care if that's how you feel."
Only 5% of people ride bicycles, so it doesn't make sense to improve bike infrastructure.
Only 5% of people drive electric cars, so we're going to create a national charging network.
He killed a lady who was in the bike lane, so they'll make him pay $2k and pick up some trash on Saturday mornings.
Incredible how the law gives a pass when you're careless or reckless with a vehicle.
"As a police officer, I don't like them"
"As a drunk driver, I don't like them"
"As a cyclist, I don't like them"
"As a pedestrian, I don't like them"
"As a traffic signal sales rep, I don't like them"
(a little roundabout 🧵)
"Why is the county planning all these protected bike lanes?"
"To help you and everyone else live longer."
"Well I don't wanna bike."
"Ok, but some residents don't have a choice. We want to keep them safe."
"Well I don't bike."
@m2bowman
@martynschmoll
That’s incorrect… You could be the only vehicle on a road or path and as a cyclist you should still be wearing a helmet. Helmets remain the best protection against head injury and not wearing them is silly.
PROPOSAL
Step 1: create high fines for parking in bike lanes
Step 2: reward people who document the crimes w/ % of the parking fine
Step 3: use the money earned from criminals to create more bike lanes
I think of clips like this whenever someone talks about how cycling & driving should be treated in the same way. As if the consequences for disorderly behavior are even remotely equivalent.
DOCTOR: Your kids need to walk more. Walking is healthy.
SCHOOL: Please use carline. Walking is dangerous.
POLITICIAN: Why would I support traffic calming? Nobody walks.
@bellachu10
People own cars, are in cars, transporting their families in cars, feeding their families because of the opportunities cars provide—you are living in a pipe dream.
Speed camera proposal:
- Driver pays 80% of the fine
- Planning dept head pays 10%
- Engineering dept head pays 10%
Land use & transportation policy would quickly favor traffic calming, and we'd reach Vision Zero goals.
This is not The Onion.
News videos people speeding for 30 minutes straight, never once comments on it. Instead, "drivers are scraping the pavement."
An entire segment about scrapes caused by driving too fast for the conditions.
3500-lb CAR vs PEDESTRIAN:
"We offer thoughts and prayers.
There's nothing we can do."
35-lb SCOOTER vs PEDESTRIAN:
"We're banning scooters
so this never happens again."
An Italian eatery in NYC was obliterated in a hit-and-run crash. The photo is a type of Rorschach test.
Do you conclude that eateries should never be located next to a street? Or do you conclude speeding in cities is an enormous threat?
For the person driving:
Best case = save a few minutes
Worst case = cops catch you, lose a few minutes, pay a fine
For the person cycling:
Best case = live to tell about the driver who threatened your life
Worst case = death
Authorities keep talking about how pedestrians need flashlights to protect themselves from motorists. Here's the only type of flashlight that does the job.
It's illegal to park within 30ft of stop sign in VA. These types of corners are easy places to install bump-outs & other intersection traffic calming.
Neighbors will scream about parking loss. Tell them you're saving them from getting tickets.
These people are walking the wrong way on a major street (which is against the law), refusing to use the sidewalk and endangering their child. I see this all the time in my neighborhood. Pedestrians putting themselves in danger are not drivers’ or street designers’ fault.
I don't think anyone believes the car industry would be happy for city dwellers to use bicycles instead of cars. They need to sell cars.
So why do you think the car industry played such a major role in the promotion of bicycle helmets?
