A thread on the Geometry of Urban Patterns: Two forms exist. Vernacular networking - the medieval winding streets etc. Classical networking - the euclidean grid/Jeffersonian grid Making #goodurbanism requires harmony between plan, skyline, corridor, and node.

Classical architecture is so much better at wayfinding and navigation than what we typically get today it’s hard to convey the million ways this works better

We will soon have spent more time talking about reviving Art Nouveau than it existed as a living practice. It’s the least viable path forward of all the classical styles.

At the end of the 19th century, an exciting new architectural style emerged that would rapidly spread across Europe: Art Nouveau. However, it would die out as quickly as it appeared... I went to Antwerp and Brussels to photograph some of the highlights. A short 🧵

This is the same thing as why ornament is not used in architecture. Cultural not economic factors. Americans choose inferior taste and food experience. That not a single American manufacturer of pasta uses these simple changes is so striking.

Yes! Pasta brand matters. De Cecco (Imported from Italy) contains 100% semolina flour, is extruded through bronze dies, and is dried at a lower temperature compared to US-made pastas (Ronzoni/Barilla) which use hotter drying, Teflon dies that produce an excessively smooth noodle

Many archbishops of Canterbury came from places like Pavia and Normandy. The Church from the 11th century onward was the most democratic and international institution until quite recent. A kind of barbell Christianity. Concern for the global community and the highly local

Amusingly, my "moral heat map" resembles that of a Sicilian peasant. Very high affinity for close family, high affinity for neighbors, but when it comes to larger abstractions, my mind jumps directly to "The Church." Don't find the "national" abstraction very compelling.

Mallorca Spain has most of their highways on 18th century dry stone structure. Repair from a collapse in 2019. The government prohibited the repair from being used structurally as a road. A concrete ‘modern’ wall was built with this section reduced to an overlook.

If you like @wrathofgnon or @simonsarris aesthetic poasting. Then I highly recommend you pick up @LeonKrier book The Architecture of Community. Leon distilled the humanistic principals best of architecture and urbanism. Concerned heavily with truth, justice, beauty.

In 1947, the UK was producing over 50% of the world's shipping tonnage. In 2023, it produced zero commercial ships. This week on Construction Physics, I look at how the UK lost its shipbuilding industry. https://t.co/m2TUkARKu8

People wanting to reproduce is probably a good sign of civilizational health and thus our goal should be to produce conditions where individuals want to produce at or above replacement. But that’s not entirely obvious to me.

If we were serious about fertility we’d need to study England or other early to industrialize places and their baby booms and busts. A coherent theory to explain them would be necessary to stimulate a baby boom.

Most tourists visiting Rome today skip this place. If you ever find yourself in Rome, I strongly recommend visiting it. those tiny doorways continue a 2000‑year habit of retail: already under Trajan the ground‑floor fornici held shops,we even have a 104-AD statue base dedicated
