1. Republicans need an affordability agenda—not just better messaging. 2. Subsidizing demand with cash hand-outs is not an affordability agenda.
NEW: Republicans are starting to publicly + privately sound the alarm about their affordability strategy — and warning they could lose the midterms if they dont pivot Message has been delivered to GOP leaders, WH aides & Trump w/ @sahilkapur @jonallendc

Imagine if everything in life was as good as gold. It’s easy to invest in, could help grow your wealth, and protect it too. A timeless asset that stands strong when others may not.

Merry Christmas!
@AlanMCole @JHWeissmann People always feel infrastructure was better in the past because the most important pieces of infrastructure in all our lives -- our bodies -- are in fact in secular decline, getting worse every year

@JHWeissmann I’m very sympathetic to “phones and streaming video messed up some important aspects of the human experience during my lifetime” but the nostalgiapoasts always try to tell me I should want my dad’s 1987 Dodge Dynasty back too.

Another key observation here is that "Hardcore MAGA types are also hardcore conservative Republicans who reliably vote in elections." Irregular Trump voters are less ideological and more open to persuasion, in addition to being less likely to turn out.

As Patrick notes, when Republicans lose it's usually for boring reasons of persuasion, not turnout. e.g. Republicans lost 2024 Nevada Senate not mainly due to undervote, but because some Trump voters voted Democratic in the Senate race.

As Democrats we're used to hearing the "turnout over persuasion" myth from Democrats, but @PatrickRuffini debunks its mirror image on the Republican side: There is not a bloc of "Trump only" voters that only turns out for Trump.

When no one votes Democrats win, redistricting a wash, 40% of young women would leave the U.S. if they could, scary AI progress, the rise of the long-range kicker

I understand why disability advocates fear gatekeeping. But refusing to gatekeep accommodations like single rooms or extra time will lead to what happened at Disney parks—-where abled people flood the system and accommodations become less available to those who actually need

It has never been possible to get good, fresh, full-size tomatoes in the winter; this is not a new problem. The tomato situation has gotten better over time: high quality small tomatoes are now available all year.
@jbarro Unless you’ve forgotten what tomatoes smell like or what watermelons taste like, there is no way to believe food produced today does more than resemble “real” food

I have a back catalog of Gourmet magazines from 1990 to 2008. They are fun to read and beautiful to look at. The recipes themselves are way worse than what you would find in The New York Times or Cook's Illustrated today.

The quality of recipes has also greatly improved. There has been a lot of learning. The correct way to cook a steak (reverse sear) was invented in 2007.
1. Grocery stores have more variety and fresher food. 2. Home-cooking is better and easier because the Internet makes recipes free and easy to access. 3. Fast casual options today are far better than fast food options back then.

Does anyone who grew up actually middle class believe the quality of food has gotten worse since the 90s?
It's an empirical fact that basically everything in our day to day lives has gotten worse over the years. The quality of everything -- food, clothing, entertainment, air travel, roads, traffic, infrastructure, housing, etc -- has declined in observable ways. Even newer inventions

Need a woke reboot of Home Alone where the wet bandits engage in a restorative justice process with Kevin
It's very hard to figure out what age is appropriate to let a kid watch Home Alone. The considerations are unintuitive. - Are the bad guys too scary? - Is the premise too scary? - Is the neighbor bad guy fakeout too scary? - Is Kevin too mean to the bad guys?

Seems to me that the claim that NYT and WaPo articles are in conflict isn't right and rests largely on a misreading of reductive headlines that point in different directions. I invite anyone who thinks I'm mistaken to quote the specific passages that are in conflict. WaPo
The war crimes claims seem to have utterly collapsed this afternoon. After even the NY Times found that no order "to kill them all" was made by Hegseth, the Admiral who explained the order of the second strike was based on the actions of the survivors...

The implication of land acknowledgements is that the United States is an illegitimate project built on injustice, and liberals should reject them for that reason.

It's absolutely true that a stronger Democrat could've won this seat. It's also true Aftyn overperformed! And that we're on path to sweep the midterms. The question is whether we want Democrats to win small in the same places or win big everywhere. The answer should be obvious.
Aftyn Behn lost last night's special election in Tennessee. But that's not a reason for Democrats to give up. It's a reason to think big. The fundamentals are there for Democrats to make major gains in the midterms by embracing heterodoxy to win — and win everywhere.

I think this is a cool idea. Big Air ski jumping in Yankee Stadium! A Winter Olympics would be less logistically daunting than a Summer Olympics. And there's precedent for this sort of split games, with Milan-Cortina.
🚨 New Op-Ed in @NYDailyNews 🚨 Billy Jones and I lay out a bold, sustainable vision for a NYC–Lake Placid Winter Olympics — using New York’s existing world-class venues, diverse global community, and proven infrastructure to host a responsible, cost-effective Games. Read more
