The spectacle being "ruined" by the ending is the whole point! That the Greens' attempts to invoke the Targs' trappings of power (the crown, the sword, high septons oils, Criston's white cloak, etc.) being undercut by the REAL power of House Targaryen, a dragon, is deliberate!
@netw3rk
Stolen from reddit user Mortal-Kumquat: "I remember Scal saying one time 'I’m closer to Lebron than you are to me,' and that shit alwaaaays stuck with me how these dudes are just on another level lol"
The Greens in my mentions whining that HOTD is anti-green need to reconcile that stance with the biggest change in the series being them aging Alicent down to be childhood friends with Rhaenyra and way more sympathetic because of that rather paint by numbers evil fantasy stepmom
One of the things I think many of GoTs actors/actresses really excel at is nonverbal acting. Clarke has definitely stepped her game up this season and this is perhaps the best example, especially that first, unsteady step at the end.
I love the dynamic House of the Dragon is going with: the Greens are being cast as way, way more sympathetic than they were in the books BUT, they're making it explicit that Rhaenyra was never disinherited.
It's a slight alteration both directions but show is better for both!
@lukeisamazing
My school did a fairly decent job of avoiding pitfalls of many rural U.S. education systems. But I'll never forget reading up on Grant and realizing his portrayal as a "meh general and worse president" came about because during the latter he created the DOJ and broke the Klan
Blackthorne: You can see the fault lines when D&D never understood what GRRM was going for with Stannis as they fell for surface-level glitter of Renly. They're Tywin stans for God's sake! But the big issues really begin S5...

He's a registered Democrat and also doesn't give speeches to anti-abortion fundraisers so I guess the better question is where was Jim Harbaugh on January 6?

Waititi's direction in Ragnarok alone would merit giving him a SW movie. But his references to the Mandalorian Wars from KotOR, his use of humor, all of it in Mandalorian Finale means he really should get his own damn trilogy. That was legit one of my favorite SW viewings ever.
@RKO2004
Except the Hightowers are running the show for the Greens and they're playing up all the symbols/trappings of power instead of the actual power, which is the dragons. Aegon II isn't crowned atop Sunfyre, Vhagar isn't in the picture, etc.
“There’s much I don’t understand,” Davos admitted. “I know the seas & rivers, the shapes of the coasts, where the rocks & shoals lie. I know hidden coves where a boat can land unseen. And I know that a king protects his people, or he is no king at all.”
Stannis’s face darkened.
THE FLEET THAT LOST HER DORNE?! THE FLEET THAT UNDERCUT HER TAKING CASTERLY ROCK?! JESUS CHRIST THIS IS WHY I DON'T WATCH THE POST-EPISODE COMMENTARY. HOLY BALLS
@gabehudson
@cmclymer
The showrunners EXPLICITLY said that it is a commentary on the current political moment of forced birth, of women excluded from those choices and for political purposes.
But idk why they needed to say it when it's barely subtextual in the show. But you didn't even watch it so...

HotD involves competing claims which didn't really have precedent or clarity to really adjudicate who was in the right
Stannis vs. Renly involves Renly being a FUCK
Emmett's not wrong but reason you shouldn't have had to choose is because Renly shouldn't have made it an issue

Avid court watcher that you are, Glenn, I'm sure you saw the multiple rulings against Jones for propagating the lie that the Sandy Hook shootings were a false flag operation and the grieving parents were crisis actors. Any thoughts on that for Jones or nah?
@delance2
You get the show is not the book, right? They've changed a ton of stuff. I mean, is there a bigger change than aging down Alicent to make her a childhood friend with Rhaenyra? Also makes her way more sympathetic too!
Pretending HOTD is all anti-green is nuts.
Honestly, this is the best blog post from GRRM I've ever seen. Someone who has given up on ASOIAF doesn't pen THIS. This is, if not a love letter, then at least an ode not to just writing but to writing ASOIAF itself.
@sorkinese
I wasn't in the situation room that night but I'll bet all the money in my pockets against all the money in your pockets, that it was Leo. WHO NO! ONE! ELECTED!
GRRM can tell a story with just his chapter names. Nowhere does he do it better than Reek to Prince of Winterfell to The Turncloak to A Ghost in Winterfell to now here... Theon. It's art.
What's hilarious is there's compelling arguments Tywin, depending on the quote, didn't understand these points himself, contradicted them through his actions, actively undermined the point of the quotes or sometimes all three!
@edsbs
(3/3) Later Hall approaches Suh and goes "Friend... do you know Jesus?" Suh, looks at him intensely, eyes as big as saucers, biting through his mouthguard and gives a single headnod yes. Said Hall: "For the rest of the game, he still whupped me... but he wasn't as mean about it."
I don't care that he's old. I don't care that as the newest fatherly mentor to Jon, every trope demands he dies. I don't care that he's likely dead already in GRRMs completed manuscript of TWoW. If Davos dies, we riot.
I've got Green stans in my mentions whining the show isn't sympathetic enough to them, I've got Rhaenyra stans in my mentions bitching the succession is not ambiguous in the book.
I'm surrounded on all sides which means I can shoot in any direction and hit something.

"GAMERS ARE A SUSPECT CLASS!" I shriek as three bailiffs drag me out of the courthouse, my cheeto-stained brief clutched high above my head
Days like today, with the House of the Dragon trailer dropping just remind me how I need a week off work, min, when Winds of Winter drops.
The memes, the analysis, the shitposting, the glee. It's all top-tier.
Stannis put a thin, fleshless hand on Jon’s shoulder. “Say nothing of what we’ve discussed here today. But when you return, you need only bend your knee, lay your sword at my feet, and pledge yourself to my service, and you shall rise again as Jon Stark, the Lord of Winterfell.”

See this is a perfect analogy because you and Tracey are the rough equivalent of a toddler screaming "WON'T!" at their parents during bedtime and thinking they're defiant truth tellers against oppression and abuse.
It's just that some of us grew out of that.
Instead of playing games like this, going for haymakers, OSU -- with skill players as good if not better than these two teams -- Day decided to run stretch and toss into the boundary multiple times.
LOL kill me

Dark Phoenix is probably gonna suck but I'm going to see it for Fassbender's "You're always sorry Charles. And there's always a speech. But no one cares," from the trailer.
The shift from disbelief to despair to blinding rage is sooooo goddamn smooth and yet you can tell at each point where she's at, but she's still in a daze at the end, even as her mind crystalizes what she's going to do.
Fortunately I haven't seen this criticism from the more respectable defenders of Game of Thrones but the logic of "yeah let's see you write better!" is so utterly servile and stupid.
I don't need to be a 4-star chef to know when a meal tastes bad.
"I had the cart before the horse, Bryan Cogman told me. I was trying to create spectacle to get us to care about the characters, when I should have been trying to save the characters to create spectacle we care about."
@alex_kirshner
It's like the 10th most important part of that story but when Harry Miller retired, hearing that he went to Day and Day immediately linked him up with OSU psychological care first before football was good to hear. That should be the bare minimum but we know it isn't.
@KT_So_It_Goes
USSR and US going "let's try to eradicate smallpox together even while we try to kill each other" during the height of the Cold War is one of the crowning achievements in human history.
And these yutzes don't know about it and wouldn't understand even if they did.
The wizard was a monster of a man, as tall as Victarion himself and twice as wide, with a tangle of bone-white hair that grew about his face like a lion’s mane. His skin was black… Blacker than coal, blacker than jet, blacker than a raven’s wing. Burned, Victarion thought.
People take this as Cat or Ned being dumb, to trust Littlefinger. But why wouldn't they?
The point GRRM is doing with LF is two-fold: He is really GOOD at deception, at playing the amiable friend and courtier. And that his betrayals are really fucking evil.
Combining my two favorite things, ASOIAF and being way-too-online-on-Twitter-dot-com, I present my magnum opus: ASOIAF characters as dril tweets!
We start off with dril's finest tweet and the only possible pairing for it: Victarion (art by conorburkeart) and corncobs!
@RadioFreeTom
I can't remember who thought of it but somebody proposed a dark comedy ala the Death of Stalin where a dissident actually DOES accidentally trip and fall out of a window and the security services/thugs all scramble to figure out which one was responsible / take credit for it.
The early MCU films, you can definitely tell they're still finding their way with this. But getting somebody like Anthony Hopkins for Odin was a homerun. That said, Tom Hiddleston steals the scene in the weapons vault between him and Hopkins. Some of the best acting in the MCU

That's because they love drama. When times are good they seek to create drama. When times are bad, the drama is there for the taking and they're there no questions asked.
Fitting for such an artistic people.

And the charge that calling "bombing Serbia" while leaving out why that campaign was launched in an effort to equate it to Putin's invasion? That whataboutism too?
They literally had Larys Strong's scheming and information gathering abilities revealed in a scene where he dishes ABOUT THE TEA.
The writers are terminally online, just like us.
Even in episodes I was meh on, I can't remember a show (and really... most movies) that did spectacle half as well as GoT. Yeah, that's budgetary but where and how they spent it was SO good.
"Coin flip" is complete bullshit and is just an in-universe saying. But if y'all don't see the foreshadowing for what's coming w/Daenerys in Winds, it's because you don't want to.
Which I sympathize with to be sure. . I didn't want to see what was gonna happen to Shireen either.
