📍Seattle by way of MPLS & KS. Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, and Transportation. King County Metro's first urban designer. Opinions are my own. 🏳️🌈
To my new followers, I'm a gay urbanist with degrees in architecture and landscape architecture. I can't keep my mouth shut about politics, so be prepared to read about all of the above. Thanks for joining me 😊
Seattle: don't worry about the fact we're cutting funding for libraries, pools, schools, summer camps, etc. the money we're saving will be spent to arrest youth who ultimately have no other activities due to the cuts...
Could use a bit more shade, but Seattle also needs a street like this. And here's a hint: commerce thrives when folks don't have to worry about being killed when walking from store to store...
Speaking of air quality, one of the fastest growing cities in America has been choking on smoke for weeks now. And we're continuing in as if nothing is wrong. We're the frogs and the water is now boiling.

Thank god they restored this former outdoor dining area to it's absolute highest and best use: parking. Private property deserves space downtown too... <s>
Each time I scooter in this city, I'm convinced the average Seattle driver is a homicidal maniac who thinks 30 seconds of their time is more valuable than my life.
If you drive a car you need to check yourself. The behaviors I've witnessed since getting home (less than a week) are wild. Seriously, your time is not more valuable than my life. Get over yourselves.
I haven't announced this to Twitter yet but... I am officially the first career services Urban Designer-Wayfinding Specialist at King Country Metro! No more temporary contract for me. Expect a lot more maps from me (and Metro).
I don't want anyone to be injured or die by traffic violence. But if someone drives in a negligent way, shouldn't it be the driver who faces consequences rather than an innocent bystander?
Not a mini-roundabout. And this is creating a deadly fixed object (DFO) for errant vehicles. There are better and safer ways to calm traffic for all users, such as an actual mini-roundabout.
It's a beautiful new terminal. But there doesn't seem to be any space for retail. Did this facility go through the Seattle sanitization process? Nowhere for ferry riders to get a snack or something to drink?
Roosevelt Station makes it so much easier to get to Green Lake from Capitol Hill. Ashamed to say that after 5 years in Seattle, this is my first time more than just passing through Green Lake on a bus.
Many of the folks mourning the loss of this structure support the policies directly responsible. When the only land available to build densely is along an arterial, don't be surprised when your favorite business along said arterial is replaced with dense construction.

's Wallingford neighborhood is underway; it's been closed since June 2017. The crumpled heap of metal out front appears to be the remains of the marquee and neon sign.
This map was a labor of love, y'all (emphasis on labor). I couldn't fit any more information on here if I tried (and I did). But the result is a great map showing all your transit options for attending MLB All-Star events!

The All Stars are coming, but you’re already here. Looking for ways to travel to T-Mobile Park and Lumen Field for all the ASG activities? We have you covered! Use our transit wayfinding map to get to the fun 🚎⚾️
People of twitter: I have a mapping question for you. Which of the below notations is easier to understand as a route splitting at this intersection (SB turning west and NB continuing north)? I'm experimenting with my symbols.
A football game ended at a stadium that holds 70,000 people on a Saturday night. With a year's notice, the light rail station serving this stadium has 15 minute service. See the problem,

Phillip says "it has no place on Capitol Hill" and calls Brooklyn Ave [where a new Safeway is in U-District] a "soulless urban canyon" and will "destroy the property value of nearby residents"
Seattle is the largest city in the largest metro area both west of Chicago and north of San Francisco (in the US). We need to act like it. This comp plan is not enough.
Pretty disappointed with what I'm seeing so far in the
@CityofSeattle
comprehensive plan and expressing those concerns to City reps. The largest city in the state should be maximizing the use of the tools
#waleg
is providing them, not doing the minimum.
I've used our transit system more today than I have in awhile (bus and link). How do we still have riders... Our elected leaders owe us an explanation. This decline starts at the top.
Not shooting the messenger but... 20 minute headways on Link is excruciating... I'm spending more time waiting for the train than actually on the train.
I get there are "reasons" for this. But it sure feels like peds and two-wheels continue to get piecemeal solutions (as long as it doesn't impact the almighty driver) while automobiles get continuous and ubiquitous networks across public space.
Dash cam video shows a road rage incident in June when a Portland driver plowed through barricades and nearly hit several people along the Rose Festival's Grand Floral parade route. Here's video & full story:
Capitol Hill is a dense pedestrian district with no 4 lane arterials. Why is it so radical to assume people walking will cross the street at any and all legal crosswalks? Why does my body deserve less protection than a hunk of metal?
Newsflash: people ride transit for trips other than commutes. I welcome more all day and weekend service. Let's stop subsidizing the suburban commute trip at the expense of local service.
While I hate the ped flag strategy at crosswalks, I support having a stash of bricks for peds to pick up and carry as they cross the street. Don't want to follow the law? Here's a brick for your windshield.
HAPPENING NOW: Federal Way HS students are demanding the city take action to make this intersection safer.
They tell me drivers consistently run red lights while they’re crossing the street to school.
An organizer says 1 of those cars hit her friend. The friend is recovering.
Low Res preview of a personal project I've been working on. Side note: do any of my followers have experience with selling original prints/digital prints? DM me if you have insight into the process. I'd like to learn what it might take to sell some of my mapping work.
Yep, we’re busy. More than ever! Projections show 6/23 will be the busiest day ever at SEA. 😱 72,655 outbound travelers are expected to go thru checkpoints, or about 196,000 overall thru the airport. Be prepared❗️Arrive early❗️ Check our travel tips ➡️
The rider experience committee just voted to move forward with a $3 flat fare for Link, but we should expect a robust debate about $3 versus $3.25 at next Friday's full board meeting.
If a councilmember's business can block public space, so can residents. For every ecoblock we have blocking RVs for homes, we should have one of these homemade chicanes.
I get it, we're all 'anarchists' and 'anti-establishment' in Seattle. But for the love of god can we stop intentionally destroying public infrastructure?? It's one of the major reasons we can't have nice things.
Sound Transit is increasing an escalator and elevator contract with Schindler, a maintenance company. What will it do? And why is vertical conveyance equipment failing so often?
Story:
Incredibly difficult to read and hear first-hand accounts of bus drivers and other transit employees who bear the brunt of societal failures. Addiction, homelessness, and other issues don't disappear because we pretend they're not there. They end up at bus stops...
The next piece of the wayfinding system is up! These nudge posts are meant to confirm you're walking the right way. They're the last part of your walking journey once you've planned your route.
Hot take: transit leadership and staff know this. Nobody I've talked to argues money is better spent on electrification (to such a great extent) than service or other needs. This is a political decision.
This is the same debate we're having (and have currently lost) in King County and Seattle: the KC Executive is proposing to spend a quarter of a billion dollars on full fleet electrification.
Meanwhile, bus service has suffered a *lot* and we're proposing to cut a trolley route.
and half of offices remained empty. transit planners are obsessed with moving people in and out of downtown to work and yet they dont realize people use transit for so many other things
We design city streets as freeway off ramps then act surprised when speeding cars run red lights and crash into buses. Drivers will never willingly change their behavior. Design must force them.
We don't know the exact cause of this crash but this is one of many streets in downtown Seattle that
@seattledot
treats like an extension of the interstate freeway network.
Your daily reminder that Seattle rebuilt an entire neighborhood, basically from scratch, and this is the street we got. We can't blame this on 1960's planning. This is 21st century American urban planning...

Starbucks in Midtown Phoenix. Third Space with free WiFi, restrooms, people working and relaxing. Why can’t Starbucks’ headquarters city have nice things. You know why.
First Thursday at the Ballard Ave Landmark Board. They're hearing changes to traffic at Ballard Ave and 20th. Calming looks nice, but it's getting push back from board member whether pergola at Conor Byrne should be able to "force" an intersection redesign.
Yes. Yes it should.
12th Ave is the perfect example of Seattle's street space priorities. In the densest part of the city, people walking get 6' max (narrowed by signs and poles) whole parked cars get more space. Plus wide traffic lanes.
Speaking of maps... Wondering what bus service will be like around North Link Stations? Check out these brand new maps. Be on the lookout for these online and at stations/bus bays in October. See link for hi-red pdfs.

Hey
@SoundTransit
, you have no operating escalators down from the mezzanine at UW Station. One of them has been down over a week. There was a basketball game today. It's no football game, but a lot of fans are lowering their opinion of you.
Controversial opinion: we need need plentiful public restrooms, but transit agencies shouldn't be the first ones to build them. The first public restrooms will be over-used (due to a lack of alternatives). Transit agencies are already having a hard time keep stations clean.
