My hot take is bloodless, sanitized violence is actually way worse for kids than realistic violence. Violence should be scary and uncomfortable; anything else is a lie.

I think that we should bring back calling things “in poor taste” sometimes. The tendency to jump straight to “problematic” or “harmful” is very flattening and makes it harder to discern whether something is really bad or just… not well thought out and kinda tacky.

Showing your kid an MCU is imo way more deranged than showing your kid a standard horror movie. The latter doesn’t lie nearly so much about the nature of violence.

Yeah I’m sorry but this is insane. Employers have no business looking into their employees’ private lives. If it doesn’t concern work and isn’t an actual crime, an employee shouldn’t be reprimanded or fired. Cheating is a shit thing to do but it’s not a crime and shouldn’t be.

Classics are easy to acquire. If a kid needs a copy of Pride and Prejudice but $ is tight, they can legally download a PDF. They can expect to find a copy available at their local library. If they want to buy a copy, they’re easy to find used or new for like $5 or less.

3) Classics can be hard but that is exactly the point. If you aren’t reading stuff that challenges you, you will not get better at reading. Obv a book CAN be too hard, but a 16yo who reads at grade level is not going to learn much from a YA book written at 6th grade level.

I always find it funny/sad how many people act as if GRRM’s books are amoral or unconcerned with matters of good and evil; it’s very clear to me that Martin’s work is actually deeply concerned with morality—but the morality of individual actions, not of people or of factions.

If you are older than like 8 and still need morally instructive fiction, your parents, teachers, neighbors, community leaders, and any other adult authority figure you ever interacted with failed you spectacularly

Personally I think industry workers being able to make a decent living is more important than having access to an unending slurry of New Content. There’s plenty of great stuff out there already. You won’t suffer.

My spicy lit take is you don’t HAVE to read any classics if you don’t want to but you should just admit that you don’t want to instead of tarring a bunch of stuff you haven’t read as “outdated” and “bigoted.” You don’t know, you haven’t read it. Just own that you don’t want to.

Most classic/old books that still get regularly read (for school or otherwise) are good, actually.

Very, very few people that I saw were making argument 1. The real argument was “a lot of people who are insistent upon coziness/comfort do not tolerate anything uncomfortable well and deem it immoral, and this is not a contingent of people we want in horror spaces”

To every miserable little worm making the same “huh huh haven’t you been on a writer’s strike for a decade” joke in the comments and QRTs: Not a one of you will see Valhalla and you deserve less than nothing

The writers' strike is on. No one wanted this -- no writer with an ounce of sense, anyway -- but the producers and the studios and the networks and the streamers gave us no choice.

Excellent thread—GRRM’s reputation as a cynic or “nihilist” is completely undeserved and anyone who actually reads the books and thinks about them beyond their immediate gut reaction can see that imo

I’m rereading ASOIAF and there’s something about GRRM’s writing that really speaks to me this time around: his consistency in making the values of the people in his world legible and at the same time his constant ambivalence about those values 🧵

I’m still losing my mind over the lady who got a six figure book deal for a YA retelling of the Odyssey, which she hasn’t read. The blackest publishing pill of all.

Maybe my least favorite type of guy on book Twitter might be the sort who talk about all books written before like 1975 as if they are incomprehensible arcane tomes that cannot be read by the average person

Honestly I think “a friend wants to fuck you” is really only a real problem if you’ve made it clear that you’re not interested and they try anyway. It’s possible to find someone attractive and not act on it. Most people do this every day.

Judging by the responses I got when I posted these before: “Writers should read.” and “Writers should find value in the process of writing, not just having written.”

It is in fact cruel to make a person obligated to remain celibate if they want to become a member of the clergy. Sex and companionship are natural human desires. Plenty of other religions see no issue with their faith leaders marrying and having sex.

I just don’t get the whole “I want to be a writer but I don’t want to write” mindset at all. Like… why? “Being a writer” does not, generally speaking, get you money, respect, power, or bitches. If you’re not in it primarily for the love of the game, you are wasting your time imo

And like it’s fine if you still want to write and it gives you joy! You can do something and accept that there are other things you could do to help improve but you don’t want to do them. I would be a better painter if I practiced drawing more, but I fucking hate drawing.

Throughout most of human history, anyone who wasn’t rich had sex in the same room as their kids because their house had one room. Lmao just shut the door. Your kid’s more likely to grow up a maladjusted freak if you treat sex like it’s traumatizing instead of fun and natural

Any time I see a really obvious pop culture reference in something, I cringe. Any time I see a literary allusion that you have to have read a very specific work of a writer who isn't very commonly read outside of upper level university literature courses, I clap like a seal
