Do people not understand that if you live in a council house and earn well, you pay rent? Like a substantial amount? Just to the council, rather than a racketeering private landlord, money that is invested back into the community. Imagine if most rentals were council-run!
May delete later but wondering: have other women had the experience of talking to a man, just normally - maybe about work or films - and they suddenly mention their gf/wife (presumably to make sure you don’t get the wrong idea even though the thought hadn’t crossed your mind!)
😡😡😡😡 people who can’t use an app and may need help:
-elderly
-disabled
-people on pay as you go who may have run out of data
- literally anyone who needs a ticket when the stupid app fails / machine doesn’t work (why are they pretending their tech is elite?!) 😡😡😡😡
I personally find it quite arrogant, esp when these interactions are so obviously nonsexual (and I’m like in my lanyard and wedding ring 😂), and my instinct is it’s a bit sexist but I don’t know for sure? Is the answer to not be friendly to men? But some of my best pals are men?
We need more council housing, not trying to shame certain people who once were struggling but are now currently doing ok out of their neighbourhoods. Economically mixed communities are better than segregated. Most top tax ppl clearing off and leaving the plebs behind is sad
@Excalibah
Oh I talk about my partner all the time! I’m talking about a specific instance where you know that the mention has been dropped to convey ‘I’m off limits’. Which is fine if there’s flirting but if you’re just talking about the bus timetable I have been taken aback
@jasebyjason
Thanks so much for sharing this! I usually say ‘thank you / cheers drive’ (inspired by Bristol) when I get off but a hello costs nothing and at least they def hear it. Will be following your lead!
I’m on the suffragette line which used to be known as the GOBLIN (Gospel Oak Barking LINe) so you could say things like ‘I’m going to get the goblin home’ and I’m sorry but that is a loss
@edcmpbl
First of all, big up for doing this, am sure it could have felt at points unsafe. Second, when I was watching it, I noted now many times one guy kept saying ‘English’ and wondered if you felt your Scottishness was a concern to him (or if he was just sore you were arguing back)
had to mute this thread earlier cos RIP my mentions but thanks to those who respectfully contributed in good faith, genuinely fascinating to hear your stories and perspectives 🤔
@Excalibah
There’s some great examples in the replies - ie someone asks the name of the dog and gets ‘I have a wife’ as a reply - it’s that I’m talking about. And that frustrates cos it’s like ‘can’t I just be friendly or funny, why must I always be assessed sexually?’ if that makes sense
@Excalibah
Obviously twitter is not the place for nuance and it’s hard to describe feelings, moods, subtle implications, but seeing all the other women respond with shared feeling I do wonder if this is a thing (and you know us writers love stuff like this, the elusive human relationship!😜
I’ve written today’s G2 cover abt our abysmal dentistry system and the political negligence that got us to a situation where 40% of kids don’t see a dentist, A&E dept flooded w/dental patients, oral cancer is up, and people pull their teeth out w/pliers
Sunak wasn’t voted for as PM. Cameron wasn’t voted for as even a current MP. This is actually mad now, never EVER want to hear this government talk about sovereignty and unelected EU officials ever again. Just call the election and let us live
Also, a quick note about us unpaid carers, of which there are 11m of us. Mostly women. Unable to fulfil our potential because busy firefighting while the gov pours petrol on the flames. What kind of feminism is not on this? Too busy arguing about gender, while we all burn
Went to Liverpool briefly yesterday and saw an Ulster bank tenner for the first time! There’s no monarch on them! It’s just bunnies and flowers and nature! Could get into this for all of UK tbh
Kimberly has identified something crucial here - this week's story will have a knock on effect for a generation, in terms of WoC entering politics. Decades of work being undone, horrifying
Black women & WOC in politics (councillors, working for political parties etc.), after this week between Diane’s treatment & the Sky video of Zahra Sultana’s treatment:
Would you run for MP?
All I see ahead of me is wine tasting in Melbourne & backpacking in Cartagena ✌🏾 🎒
'We could be seeing the end of the Conservative party.'
A major poll has suggested the Conservatives will face one of their worst results in the upcoming general election. The 15,000-person poll indicated the Conservatives would be wiped out in Scotland & Wales and hold just 98…

telling the story of 10 radical actions from Britain’s Black and Brown communities 💫 These movements have paved the way, knowing them can show us how to keep going
I’m covering for Adrian Chiles this week - obviously an impossible task - but have given it a shot.
“Why has LinkedIn become so weird?
It is now used as a full social network – and is changing how we think about our accomplishments.”
@Excalibah
Also as an aside, I just don’t assume ppl fancy me, unless they are making express advances I don’t assume, so when men talk to me like I fancy them (when I don’t and am just being normal) I can find it arrogant. Tho I accept there’s diff reasons
After 4yrs it’s finally my bday today 🥰. It’s also Ja Rule’s. He’s the only other leapling I know of so I always think of him.
Now, I’m having a crap leapday RN bcos I’m recovering from 🏥. But, as it turns out, SO IS HE 🤯
Astrology is not real but …
Something I think abt is how the ‘put a celeb on & they’ll like it’ way of commissioning is patronising to audiences. Seen it a lot re media for young ppl, as tho the youth aren’t interested in originality or boldness, only what’s familiar
From earlier, I met
@chiwithaC
to discuss her surreal, silly, and sometimes dark, BBC comedy. I’ve been following Chi on TikTok for yrs now. Comedy creators are often cut from the same cloth (Oxbridge etc) so it’s glorious to see someone else breakthrough
felt cute might delete later (largely for copyright reasons as can’t get a straight answer online if watermarked pics are ok for social)

Failing miserably at Xmas movies this year. So far watched Elf (great but already seen), Violent Night (middling), Daddy Day Care (even Eddie Murphy could not save this movie), and Chicken Run: Dawn of Nugget (disappointing). What’s genuinely good?
If ever you need a reminder that patriarchy is alive and well, just try accessing women’s healthcare from the NHS. Yesterday waited 13hrs nil by mouth for an operation only to get bumped … for the second time. The doc told me honestly these lady procedures always get bumped
And, I'm excited to interview people with the big ideas about how to make the UK a more equitable and good vibes place to be (politicians sure, but also thinkers and organisers.)
My personal view is that dentistry has pretty much been privatised, and by stealth. And if they can do it to dentistry they absolutely *will* do it to other parts of the NHS. It’s all part of that horrible ‘do the minimum’ culture that infects politics.

And I just want to point this research I came across cos I’m sad and looked it up after. It found conservatives ‘hold strong anti-cat biases, likely stemming from cats' disregard for social hierarchies, their general lack of loyalty, and their refusal to submit to authority.’
Supermarket chain Booths is doing away with its self service tills so I thought I’d just tell the world about my deep, burning hatred for them. W thanx to the Guardian editors who toned it down for me 😅
The King confers a peerage on David Cameron so the former Prime Minister (who resigned as MP for Witney) can return to government as Foreign Secretary (but he’ll be answerable to, and speak from, the House of Lords, not the Commons)
These people know nothing about the hidden costs of being skint (from pay as you go meters costing more to debt& health issues) - their assertions that ‘it could be done’ are never based on real conditions. They’ll keep saying it though, because it’s embedded in their thinking
Xmas game from fam: ‘suffragette top trumps’. A fun reminder that suffragettes were not just posh ladies in big hats - there were working class women, WoC, men too. Also - martial artists and masters of disguise?! Every political movement needs at least one hey
how bleak is this - the Xmas wreath my mum made has been stolen off my front door. Not just mine, but neighbours too. I live in this bit of East LDN where presence of drug addicts has 📈 I've not been burgled thankfully, but car smashed in etc. It's getting v tense (1/2)
Also maybe degrees would be more ‘worth’ it if students didn’t need to take on a small mortgage?! It’s always the generation who got educated for free talking about ‘value’ and acting like passion isn’t a factor in people doing well in uni and in careers
This was a very sweet message to get from a listener that I’m obvi playing big for cos I am an ageing millennial that only has like 5 friends left in the world that stay out past midnight 😂
From Monday’s guardian, I interviewed Beverley Knight to discuss her nearly thirty years in pop, a parallel career on stage, and whether we have undervalued one of the UK’s foremost voices in soul
Can’t think of a better city to host and a better place be right now. ALESHA DIXON AND THAT WOMAN FROM TED LASSO. A SONG ABOUT EDGAR ALLEN POE. I need a lie down
@elle_hunt
Interesting! maybe thats the flipside of the same coin, ie both feel off and like ur potentially being sized up sexually, even if diff outcomes. For me it’s the feeling of smtg nice and platonic being made weird:
‘Oh hey, cool trainers’
‘Thanks…. I love my gf’
Honestly, am just so excited to bring some of my journalism - traditionally culture/experience features - into a political space. Stuff like club closures, 4 day week, rent nightmares and the buses being awful outside of London *are* political issues
At the moment very few degrees are ‘worth’ it in terms of salaries because salaries are stagnant - not sure learning to think critically and empathetically (which is great for working with, and even
leading people) is to blame for that!
excellent reporting outlining the horrible working conditions of content moderators, outsourced to the global south. Also the gall of bumble to act like it’s some feminist space when it’s traumatising the women working on their app in the global south, gtfo
Have you ever had a bad experience on a dating app and reported another user?
I spent the last few months speaking to the burnt-out workers - many of them outsourced & based in the Global South - struggling to keep dating apps safe:

. Generally when JSO are on tv they get 5mins of being yelled at, max. But not with us. Spokesperson Chloe Naldrett joins to talk climate, hostile media, prison, and being treated like a public enemy💫
Fascinating piece from friend of the pod Anoosh, laying out how utterly corrosive the ultra wealthy are to society (and not just for their tendency to avoid tax!), specifically how they distort people’s perception of what a good life is
I’m in this 💫 20 podcasters pick their fave pods. I chose Hollywood Con Queen because it is genuinely bananas and sees one person pretend to be multiple Hollywood figures (inc famous folk like Deborah Snyder) to con hundreds. Worth a listen (after PSUK😉)
A Valentines well-spent at Tate Britain’s ‘women in revolt’: feminist art from 70s to now. Faves: print for ‘wages for housework’ campaign; Helen Chadwick’s satirical ‘in the kitchen’; photo project showing the double labour of working class women; just some very funny graffiti
I finally heard Andre 3000’s album and think it finally settled it: woodwind is the best section, and I wish I learned to play recorder to a higher level than pease pudding hot
has there ever been any mad caners/ artists/ alternative ppl on location, location, location? everyone's always: 'i'm looking for something quiet, i love yoga', and noone ever like 'i need somewhere within walking distance for all-back-to-ours nights and space for my sex swing'

anyone know of any compassionate schemes or charities or something that can be alerted? doing nothing feels off, there's like actual fights breaking out. but also don't want to marginalise these ppl further w police intervention that will do nowt anyway
guys, just read it has sugar cane juice in it?! haven’t had sugar cane since I was forbidden as a kid, they’d find me gnawing on a cane, pupils dilated like I was on drugs. And now I can get it in an appealing orange form, in a slender glass bottle goodbye heart disease calls
WHICH IS SAD COS EVERYONE IS BEAUTIFUL IN THEIR WAY, GOD MAKES NO MISTAKES (yes, it’s Gaga, but is it wrong?). Okay I’ll stop thinking about Madonna’s face now. Thank you for coming to my ted talk. Happy Saturday! 🧵
Nelly Furtado was wrong. I am absolutely not like a bird, I am an eel. I have come very far, overcome many things, entered spaces kept by Europe’s men, I will live a long time and keep notes throughout.
I enjoyed this comment piece from Martha Gill. She rly lays out how the power of talent and graft pales in comparison to assets (as someone from a council house w no inheritance bar diabetes, these are thoughts I have regs but darent say case I’m called chippy😂) (1/2)
So there’s two careers for you right there. There are many many others. The arts as a sector contributes billions to the UK. Also with media literacy at such low levels that it’s an actual threat to society, not sure steering people who like Literature away from it is wise
Journo request! I’d love to speak to people who work in call centres / customer service to discuss how the role has changed (more demanding? Less staff?). DMs open or hit me on email coco dot khan at the guardian dot com
A new report has found that smoking is back! Well, sort of. For today’s Guardian I peeked into the report to find out who is taking up smoking, and ask whether our national conversation needs to think about why we smoke and not just why we shouldn’t
hi twitter! I’m writing a piece about the dental crisis and I’d love to speak to someone who works in A&E about how many people end up there for lack of a dentist. Say hi if this is you, (RTs appreciated)
This was an extremely powerful, harrowing piece. It tells the story of the Adriana and some of the people aboard, their hopes and dreams of a better life. Journalism at its best, humanity at its worst
"Didn't I tell you we were going to die? Didn't I tell you we were already dead?"

anyone know how i can get hold of this? a french newspaper that only publishes on my birthday 🤯 apparently it’s full of ‘cringe worthy puns and commentary on events’. Sounds like it was made for me!
I am sure Maclean, w/ her Oxford education could easily get a better paid job. Lee Anderson probably could find the (many!) hours required to somehow make 30p meals work while not doing any childcare or just losing hours waiting for the AA cos you can’t afford a good car
I cannot believe I joined Threads on a whim only to learn the only way to leave is delete Insta entirely. Hoping they change it but in the meantime, don’t make the same mistake I did 😭😭😭
Obviously identity is complex and social justice intersectional, but it is bonkers that at a time like this (cost of living crisis with many struggling!) such little value is placed on journalists who have lived experience of it. That’s a shame for journalism as a whole
hi tweeps! some of our PSUK team are behind 'Off Mic' from

Another piece from this week - for G2’s ‘how we survive’ series - I interviewed road safety campaigner Victoria Lebrec to hear how one split sec changed her life, and get an insight into the lawyered up insurance industry’s horrific treatment of victims
I did English at uni, leaving my council house to take up a scholarship. I didn’t think about earnings cos I was used to being skint anyway and I knew if I had a degree it could open more doors, like teacher training. As it happens, I got into journalism instead
